Cafe Racer TV - Dime City's got the details..

I have mixed feelings bout this.
I'm stoked to be able to watch something about what I love, BUT I'm afraid the originality of cafe's will be lost due to over exposure.
Let's hope it doesn't turn into the next chopper scene.
Oh well. Let's enjoy the show :)

very cool to see some exposure, over the past 4 years, I've noticed that the people who roll down their windows next to me at lights go from saying:

whoa, what kind of bike is that? to
damn, that's a cool old school bike, what is it? to
nice bike man, is that some kind of old racer? to
nice cafe bike dude, is it a honda?

my guess is that within the next 5 years due to popularity of the genre, anywhere between one and seven small corporations will be formed by some ivy leaguers with venture capital from some other older ivy leaguers who will spend their oodles of dollars having some designers come up with their ideas and have some consultants take those ideas to x y or even z third world country to produce the parts, and then flood the market with somewhat generic vintage looking bike kits of moderate quality so that every flannel clad hipster with a trust fund will rush out and buy one, such that the people pulling up beside me will go from saying:

hey, cool cafe man. to
nice cafe bike dude, is that a caferockmonstersofsoutherncalifornia kit? to
is that a cafe bike dude? did you build it or something??? to
nice bike dude, haha, what did you build it yourself? sheeze... I've got one of those in my basement

but I'm on the pessimistic side of realism, so maybe the home builders will still be held on high, who knows

I know exactly where you're coming from with this! It's just like fixed gear bikes. a minority of messengers rode them (those not mechanically inclined enough to maintain a geared bike) and now its the hottest thing to hipsters. Now it seems every messenger rides one and it's really stupid. fixed gears are always slower than a rugged geared bike, and when you're paid by delivery its utterly stupid to use one. so when I DO take my track bike (lugged frame built with my own hands) out for a spin and some kid asks "Yo, dope fixeeeeeeeeee" I get a little annoyed.

on the other hand, I do see this potentially raising the value of my my cb450 w/ clubmans "in my basement" - but I'm bending over backwards trying to find someone with discovery HD and I WANT to watch it. It's not like OCC - which everyone can watch. yet.

Anybody want to record and torrent this? Please :) I would watch if I had satellite...or a TV for that matter...

Dear God, please don't let this be the new OCC. As it stands, I have the only quality cafe racer in town. A couple guys have some brat bikes but nothing like mine. When I got to the MC shop in town (it's a Harley shop), all the Harley guys come out to take a look at my bike and ask questions.

I'm not quite sure why everyone is so insecure about all of this.. It's a really good thing, guys.

It's like you're in a band, and asked to open for ozzy/metallica.. " No, no we don't wanna, Thanks tho"

What gives?

No, its like you have the prom queen all to yourself then you some how end up sharing her with half the town...

It's like when you find some unknown, underground band. You see 'em at some rotgut, hole in the wall bar. They are ragged and raw, but catchy as hell. There is something about the songs that appeals to your ears. It's just "right" to your brain. No one else is really into them but you. You talk to them, buy their demo (for $5), making copies for friends and trying to turn others onto them. But, no one listens to you, and no one that you know follows the band. All the folks you know are into the stuff on "rock 103," the classic rock station with some '90s and current hits, and you'll NEVER hear this band on that station. So, the band is "YOURS," because no one else gives a shit about them. You spend hours on the floor listening to the demo given to you by the band. It becomes the soundtrack to your life and yours alone.

Then, they do open for Ozzy/ Metallica, and suddenly everyone has "loved the band since the beginning." Their demo's are going for $700 to snooty music collectors. Suddenly, it's not YOUR band anymore, and that little special feeling you felt is even smaller.

It's just like finding that rusty old pile of shit bike that is busted to pieces, for $100. It's far from perfect, but it gives you a rush, a feeling you can't explain. You spend hours pouring through swap meets looking for parts, night after night slaving away in a dank room without good air circulation, cleaning, polishing, building your dream machine. It is your and yours alone. No one else you know is into these kinds of bikes. They're not yet vintage or classics. You don't see them on t.v. or at bike shows because people are into sport bikes and cruisers.

Then, there is a t.v. show, and magazine articles, then some celebrities are seen on bikes like yours. Then some British company buys some low powered Buell engines at auction and wraps them up in a neat little package (that looks surprisingly like the bike sitting in your living room, the unique and special bike you've been working on for 8 months), and sells them back to Americans for $9,999. And that little special feeling you felt is even smaller.

On the other hand, fantastic for the "band"/ the DCC crew for seeing an opportunity and running with it.

Thomas A. Edison: Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

I remember being a kid growing up watching shows like Junk Yard Wars, the Motorcycle Mania series, Monster Garage ( I still have my MG hat and piston key chain), Over Haulin', Biker Build off and so on (Boyd and the OCC jokers a little too... but never as good) They made me want to be just like the guys on TV. Build the coolest _____ around with my own hands, be recognized for something I did/ built and hopefully if the moon, sun and stars align win a first place at a show for it. Since then and what I can only accredit to those shows I am in the Air Force as a Fabricator. I am miles away from where I want to be skill wise but I'm still pushing hard for it and trying to learn to do what those guys on TV did years ago.

If this is what gives kids a kick in the ass get out side, pick up some tools and chop they're bicycles, lawn mowers, go carts, mini bikes and eventually motorcycles, cars and every thing else, its not a bad thing.

So rejoice, we can all be broke, covered in grease and drinking Beer and Whiskey together.

I'm totaly down for sharing. But I still like having the "prom queen" and "new band" to my self/ourselves as our own thing. But I guess as long as it gets exposed and used the right way I'm cool with it.

Called dish and upgraded everything today!!! I can't wait!!!! Hopefully it will be on the same time that my wife's stupid Jersey Shore or Bad Girls Club is on. hahaha

I cant wait for it myself, I'll have to figure out how to watch it as dont have satellite.

Maybe now I'll hear less of "you've got your handle bars on upside down" :D

Can anyone tell me if "Discovery HD Theater" is the same as "Discovery HD" ? I'm riding an hour north to my best friend's place if it is.

This is ridiculous. I'll just buy it when it comes out on DVD. Why do they have to put it on a station nobody has?!

I saw an advanced screening of the show this past friday. The editor of cafe racer mag and the guy behind the show was there, seemed like a cool guy. The show was good, some sweet vintage footage and whatnot. The show was well put together and I plan to be a loyal viewer (well.. I'm gonna torrent it since I don't have the channel or even an HD tv...) but I have to say there was a lot of checkers and lifestyle stuff offered. I'm not judging anyone, but for me, I'm just more interested in the bikes, not the 35 year old's reliving rock-a-billy culture.

Again, not trying to put anyone down, if thats your style, more power to you. I'm just saying I'm more interested in the motorcycles.

Oh and stop crying like little girls about "your" hobby/lifestyle/whatever being taken away from you. If you really do love this shit, then you shouldn't be phased. The popularity will bring good things and bad things, but the real enthusiasts will weather the storm and be here building bikes afterward just as they were before. Early adopters who jump ship as soon as things get popular are just as bad for a hobby/culture/whatever. When people do that, the hobby is only left with the newcomers who have no guidance and aren't even aware that they are bastardizing their new found interest.

I agree with the "no need for concern" mentality. I can tell this:

a cafe racer "kit" requiring no fabrication and little more then your daddy's adjustable

why be worried?

35 year olds can't relive something they weren't even alive to experience in the first place. Thanks for telling us how to act though.

...and that's not to say I even mind the ryca kit. it doesnt offend me. if someone wants to spend $9500 on a brand new bike that hearkens to our aesthetic, I'm not offended. and if someone can't fabricate but has a little money, why not? It's just a "Harley Davidson" thing. There may be a million weekend warrior dentists on chrome boats, but there's still a niche group of fabricating hard core enthusiasts (read "the Horse" lately?). I dont know if you guys noticed this or not, but we agree on EVERYTHING. maybe it'll be nice to have weekend warriors we can gripe about? new perspectives bring new ideas and I'm all about the creativity engine this forum provides. so long as this place doesnt turn into VW vortex.
