Cam Roller Question - CB350

aka "Marty"; "mgros483"
Hey guys, I know there are posts ad nauseum regarding cam roller tensioners, but I have a question I can't seem to find an answer to.

Pulled my top end on '72 cb350, and the main roller is chewed up, as expected. But, the smaller roller on the "lever" has one small area worn down, but the rest looks good. Is common practice just to replace the large roller near the centerline of the engine, or am I going to need to replace the small one too?

If I need the small one as well, anyone have a source that has reasonable prices? The only one I found had the whole lever assembly attached and was around $100.

Now I know in a perfect world I would replace all of it, and I like doing things thoroughly, but on these bikes, $100 is a pretty good proportion of a build cost, and if it's less than absolutely necessary, I'd like to know if I can skip it.

Also, I guess backing up a step, is the smaller one (closest to camera in picture) the one that is normally replaced? I guess I took it for granted that is was the larger one. If anyone has the proper nomenclature for these pieces, let me know so I avoid further confusion.

Thanks in advance, here's some pics of it:

I replaced both when i did my CB350. i got the parts off Ebay and bikebandit.com, i dont recall them being THAT expensive.

It's easiest to do it now while you're in there. if you dont replace them they will continue to deteriorate leaving bits of rubber in your oil, and eventually the chain may jump out of time and you'll hole a piston or bend a valve.

that'll be a whole lot more than $100.

Did you have to buy the whole metal lever assembly, or did you just get the rollers themselves? If so, do each of them have a certain name to search for?

Thanks for the bikebandit tip, I had been on there before but somehow missed this.

So, on the attached fiche, Do I just need parts #2 & #7?

Comes out to $100 total, not bad.

I bought these from ebay. Much more durable than stock. He doesn't have any listed, contact him if he has more in production.

Thanks, DrJ, I emailed him to see if he has any available.

Yes, item #2 is the roller / arm assembly, and 7 is just the roller, you can re-use the axle, sleeve thing. make sure you dont loose the rubber pieces that hold in the axle for roller #7 or drop them in your bottom end or you will be splitting the cases.

i did get one of those pieces off ebay for less money but it came surface mail from Taihland and took about 4 weeks to get here.

Buyer beware!

Good to know, vuuduu!! Last thing I want is a month delay. I'm dying to get this motor back together. I think I'll just go with the replacements from bikebandit
