Re: CB tree fiddy

got some pictures of the finished seat. looks pretty great. no ponies. a big thanks to the fine folks at saddlemen

friend of mine tells me this would've cost something along the lines of $500 had they charged me. I pointed out that's how much I paid for the bike. he then pointed out that now if my seat gets messed up then my bike will be totaled. haha

got my shocks apart and I'm ready to paint various things.
cleaning the engine is a terrible, terrible thing. getting between the fins is horrible. there must be some sort of tiny special fin brush out there that would make this easier.

Re: CB tree fiddy

Dont know if I missed it, but I would ditch the forks. With pitting like that you don't know how stressed the metal underneath is. Forks are kind of those things you REALLY need when running down the road. The seat looks killer.

Cheers

Sic seat bro! Your buddy is a gem!

Re: CB tree fiddy

thanks guys. definitely excited about the seat. though I won't know if my buddy does good work until I actually get it (he's in charge of shipping over there ;D)

joe: i'm sure they'd love to do your seats for you. info and whatnot should be at www.saddlemen.com , though Jerry was in charge of getting my seat done. i can pm you his contact info if you'd like

Canuck Plumber: that's probably good advice, the forks aren't in the best shape. I don't really have the money for new forks though. if all goes well I might have a beatup cb550 soon that i could maybe do a fork swap with. but that's just a maybe.

i'm low on funds because i just bought some clubmans, a bar-end mirror, and this helmet: http://www.handmadehelmets.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=64

Re: CB tree fiddy

That's one sick helmet!
Can't wait to buy mine! I'm considering a full face, but those pilot helmets are really cool looking.

Re: CB tree fiddy

so that helmet came and it doesn't fit. the website isn't answering my emails about an exchange, either. dicks.
I need to kick this into fast forward, though. My parents are moving at the beginning of next month and I'd like this bike out of their house before then.

also, woo! seat.

Re: CB tree fiddy

after a ton of hemming and hawing i finally got to painting the engine. skipped the primer as some folks here said it wasn't necessary.
propped it up with a steel rod on some speakers.

the entire setup was all sorts of sketchy. throughout the whole thing I was afraid of ruining the speakers, the engine's paintjob, and the engine itself.
it seemed to have turned out alright though. the only thing worse for the wear is that poor steel rod.

gotta give it another coat or two once this cures as I had a hard time spraying the underside.

Re: CB tree fiddy

yeah the photos aren't too true to life, especially since they were taken with my phone. its actually a sorta gray color.
it didn't come out of the can exactly as I was envisioning, but I need to put another coat or two on it before I can know if I like it or not

Re: CB tree fiddy

put some more paint on the engine. definitely liking the color. though the paint went on a bit.. powdery in a few spots. not too sure what that's about. debating whether to do a layer of clear coat on it.

i plan on keeping the triple tree bare metal. probably polish it up. is there anything I should do to it to keep it from rusting? wax and/or clear?
would that two-part clear some people here rave about work well on bare metal, or should that be avoided?

Re: CB tree fiddy

well this sure has stalled.
I've somehow misplaced some pretty crucial things. That said, I've got to go and get some replacement engine mounting bolts from somewhere.

her she is with a front end. and some parts laying on top of her.

and in her new home. hopefully not a very long-term home.

Re: CB tree fiddy

wow that looks great! arent you worried about the paint on the engine cracking and chipping off when you have to adjust your valves or take off he side covers to do your points? Man i still love that seat!

Re: CB tree fiddy

You used the cast iron engine enamel for the engine didn't you? I am using it for my frame and I sprayed 1 light coat and 2 medium coats and got a satin finish without any powder. You must have put the coats on too light.

Re: CB tree fiddy

Nice work man! I had trouble with that same frame paint being powdery in spots. I thought it was because I was a cheap bastard and was trying to get every last bit out of the can. I did a satin finish on the frame though and the spots are under the tank so I don' think I'm going to refinish on this build though.

Re: CB tree fiddy

thanks guys.

hopefully the paint doesn't flake if I have to adjust anything; I still need to replace the engine hardware, so I guess we'll see. I wouldn't be against sanding and throwing on another coat if need be.

now this is only tangentially related to the forum, but I've been busy with this thing here.

my other bicycle got stolen, so I picked this frame off craigslist for cheap. If the 350 wasnt so far off i'd be content with only having that, but I need something now. so i'm going to get this rolling and then start work back on the 350 once there's some garage room.
