CB tree fiddy: godspeed

Re: CB tree fiddy

Could you snap some pictures of the underside of the seat?

I'm so jealous, I wish I had friends to hook me with $500 worth of work!

Re: CB tree fiddy

got the mounting bolts that I lost off of ebay, and the engine is in!
scratched it up a bit trying to get it in, but nothing a little touching up won't fix.
that whole 'lay the frame on its side' thing didn't work for me at all. i'm sure its user error and not the method's fault, but I had no luck with it.

the goal, lofty it may be, is to get the bike together and running tomorrow. the days are getting colder and i'd hate to miss out on the last of the decent weather. even if its ugly i'll at least be riding it.

sure thing; I took some phone cam pics of the underside, but they really aren't worth looking at. I've since found my lost digicam, so i'll get some better ones for you tomorrow

Re: CB tree fiddy

Nice work. Its looking good. You can use an exacto knife or razor blade at any seams if you need to remove something (ie: points cover, etc...) You just cut the paint at the seam. Don't get carried away and take your time. It will give a nice straight place so the two pieces can seperate without tearing the paint.
Keep up the good work!

Re: CB tree fiddy

thanks for the tip troybilt. my original plan was to pull them off and hope for the best ;D

here are those pictures of the underside of the seat. they just used the mounting spike things that were already there.

and here's what my other bike looks like now. hanging out in its natural habitat.

okay. off to work!

i got quite a bit done last week, but its not running yet. a bit more to do, hoping to get it all together and running this friday.

also, I decided to call the bike 'godspeed'. I just watched a 70's japanese biker gang documentary of the same name. i think its fitting since I'm not exactly flying through this build

some updates..

so the plan to finish the bike in one day failed. godspeed indeed. there need to be more hours in a day.

here's what I rigged up to compress the shocks. idea taken from goodfornothing, I think, over in the $50 mod thread. the piece of metal I picked up along with the other stuff was way too thin, so I had to improvise..

I think I spent most of a day trying to get the controls through my clubmans

drilling it out:

stringing it up

after much pulling and no moving, I thought I had a brilliant idea. it was not so brilliant.

here is how she is now. mostly together, just missing one or two things. and needs to be wired up. I have a lucas taillight on its way that I can hopefully fit in that crevice under the seat.

The keys to getting the wires through the clubmans is a good amount of lube, and you have to push, then pull. If you just pull, the wires will tighten up against that corner and won't budge. It's a pain, but can be done.

ok... so here is how you do it... i pull wires through gimps all the time, the bends on those are worse than any clubmans... blow fishing line through, then tie on a piece of string... good got that, now take all your wires you need through and wrap them SUPER tight in elect tape then run shrink wrap over the top... from here i lube with hair spray... YES hair spray, it works great and then tacks up after they are in there... once they are pulled i use some rubber glue and inject that in the opening they come out to ensure that they will not vibrate throught the wrap and short out the bike... done...
you will get better the more you do.

thanks for the tips, guys. I got them through that same night though, just took a lot of patience. i wrapped the loom and greased it, but didn't tie the string close enough to the end so getting it through the bend was tougher than it should have been. once I fixed that the rest was golden. well. as golden as a terrible thing gets.

I just got my motorcycle designation added to my license. pretty excited. will be working on the bike tomorrow

aand we have ignition!
great to know the bike hasn't died after i took it to pieces.

though as soon as I start it up the engine revs up and the RPMs start climbing. it gets up to 3k and climbing within a second before I kill it. I'm guessing the idle screws and/or throttle cable needs adjustment.

also, there's some definite wiring issues. the headlight was working, but isn't now. the horn doesn't work at all. small stuff that I'll hopefully knock out of the way next time I get to take a look at it.

haha. okay, i get it, forum. i'm slow at things. let's move on.

progress, sortof!
got a speed bleeder screw stuck in my caliper, was about ready to trash it when i found the company does repairs for free!
realized my tank was way gross, and gas wasnt even leaving it too well. got a por15 kit from ebay, relined it today, mightve fucked it up a bit!
hmm. i guess that's about it. not the most progressive progress now that I think about it. but the tank and brakes are all I'm really waiting on to have a running bike. soon!

euf.
I've been working on this thing every chance I've gotten (which is not too many). I sort of gave up on documenting it. haha.
tank's been lined, dyna coils installed, wiring harness gone-through, front caliper rebuilt. probably other stuff too. just bolted the new mufflers up today (emgo reverse cone shorties)
test ride tomorrow, if all goes well.

thats it? man, what do you do? unscrew one bolt and call it a day? :D :D

hey, now. not everyone has unlimited wrench time. between class, two jobs, and having to drive 90 miles to even get to my bike, i think I'm doing alright.

but that said, yes. i've a one bolt per day maximum.

rich: more pics on the way! it was raining the day i was hoping to take it out, so that'll happen next time, i hope

so i finally took my first ride on this thing! just awesome. no words. the last time i rode a bike was the MSF, ages ago. glad I didn't break nothin.
it's so strange to have it go in my mind from an inanimate hunk of metal that's been taking up space to some thing that actually moves.
still needs some tuning and I could give a damn about how it looks at the moment, just that it goes.
some photos of her finally seeing the sun

I need to find a way to mount the brakelight, and somehow replace the gas tank latch that broke. then i can hopefully pass inspection and start riding around the city before it freezes!
