cb350, overheating?

I've finally gotten in a decent ride on my cb350. I know I know... I need to update my build thread and post vids/pics.. I don't have a camera currently, but I'm working on it. I took my first few rides almost a month ago now, the bike was running but it would bog down under any load. After enlisting the help of some friends with the timing and valve adjustments, then replacing the 35 year old coils/condensers/wires/caps the bike finally runs strong.. it pulls in all gears and its surprisingly fast for 325cc.

Anyways, getting to the point.. the bike seemed to be really hot. I was moving around on city streets with lots of stop signs and stop lights, and it was like 90° today, so maybe thats all it was. The plugs keep getting carbon fouled, so I'm not running lean.. but what I'm really afraid of is that I may not be getting oil to the top end. How would I know if this is the case.. or do I just find out when my engine goes boom?

Also, how hot does your motor normally get? At a stop I could feel the heat radiating from the little twin. Oh and I'm running open CL pipes and velocity stacks, pretty much the same setup that troybilt had on beat-the-clock (he had the setup at one point at least..)

Pull your valve peepers to check for oil up top. They do run a bit hot in 90 degree weather. Plus you have scrambler pipes so you'll feel that more.

You don't need either of those things.
It does run pretty warm, they all do.
You have a combustion temperature of around 800 to 1,400 degrees, heat has to go somewhere.
Normal cylinder head temp around exhaust post area will be in the 3~400 degree range, conduction will tend to equalise temp around 200+ deg over entire engine, heat gets radiated into surrounding air.
If plugs are black it's too rich and needs leaning out a bit somewhere in rpm range

ok, I just don't have a ton of experience with motors, esp the kind that is stuffed between your legs and cooled by air. Theres some top end noise, either valves or cam chain, but it doesnt neccessarilly sound bad, just a little loud, but I hear that the 350 top end is a bit noisy.

Man thats one of the best things I have seen in a while. I will definitely have to get one of these for my ride.

Thanks for the link

Welcome :) If you check on there website you'll find some model for single, twin and four, usualy made for airplane but how cares :p.

I think thats good idea if you mod your engine and run a little in the traffic then its a good idea if you don't wanna wast a mod engine or a 74mm piston set ;).

Think I'll get one for at least one cyl just to know the general temp of engine.

No doubt man. I'm not saying that I'm going to run out and put one on every good running bike that I own, but you can bet your ass I'll have one on my Norton before I take it down the road for the first time. The Superblend bearings alone cost me as much as a running cb350 motor, so I definitely see the value added. If I get jammed up in traffic and see things start to creep up its time to start lane splitting ;D

Find someone with a thermal gun and get a actual read on the temp.

Report back.

What weight oil are you using? That could cause her to run hotter than normal.

You will beat your head silly if you dont.

HArbor freight has one cheap

sorry to bring this thread back from the dead.
but what is a standard operating temp for a CB350 twin in 90* weather?
and with a heatgun, where should i be measuring from on the engine?
