CB360 First start after top end rebuild checklist

Hi,

I am ready to start my bike up after doing a partial rebuild on the motor this winter and want to make sure I have everything ready to go. It had a blown head gasket and weak compression so I had the cylinders honed and got new rings. The top end looked fine with no pitting on the rockers or cam. The journals looked fine also.

On reassembly, the ring gap was perfect out of the box and I've checked compression by kickstarting it and got 170 psi. Timing and valves have been checked. I know on these bikes its easy to have the spark mechanism flipped 180 degrees but I never took it off of the cam when I took the motor apart and checked the valves to make sure I was TDC on compression so I think my spark is good and timed on the right cycle. I also adjusted the clutch and brakes and they feel fine.

My main concern is that I've changed my exhaust and intake setup from last year and the motor won't run correctly to break in the new rings in time. Last year, even with a blown head gasket it actually ran fine with the stock air boxes and some 12" straight through mufflers from DCC. I picked up some scrambler pipes and am running them without mufflers. I found some 8" baffles on ebay and put them in the pipes wrapped in fiberglass insulation. On the carbs I have some no-name ebay pods that I'm afraid will make the bike run like crap. I cut out the mounts for the stock air boxes and really don't want to run them (for hipster-style points of course). I know pods will never run as well as a stock air box but would Uni's or K&N's be a better option?

From what i've heard, cb360's can run okay with pods by adjusting the fuel mixture. I have never had to do that on this engine since it always ran fine before I took it apart.

Sorry for the wall of text but basically I'm just looking for some tips or anything I missed on a first start with new rings, and new intake/exhaust setup.

Im sorry to be the one thats going to set you free w the brutal truth of it. That person is wrong.

I dont know who've you been listening too. Your 360 w never ever run remotely correct w the cheap pods. It will not be barely ridable without extensive jetting. And without heavier modifications it will never run properly.

I am currently working for crazyPJ to give him A/F ratio feedback about his current voodoo mods and latest top secret recipes. To make a 360 run properly w K&Ns w Glass Packs.

I gave a tweak to the carbs on Deviants bike this past weekend seems to be running great w PJs latest mods. I watched him ride it throughout the weekend, however, I did not ride it myself. Deviant claimed he easily hit 90mph on it. I came to realize he was being honest, when I quickly and easily hit 90+ myself on my 360, Tuesday of this week,

Deviant is running the same K&Ns I have, but his 360 has 2 - 1 exhaust setup.

Mine was pretty lean in the mid rpms, this morning I reset my floats to 20mm, upped to 112 secondaries and made sure the caps were properly seated over the diaphragms. I drilled the emulsion holes on a pair of aftermarket 41 pilots to stock #70 bit, just in case I need to increase rich on low rpm. Getting ready to fire her up right now.

I am going to try to get the very most this 360 is capable of producing, using readily attainable jetting. To make the process easier on guys.

I approve this message. ;D

...............................................and apart from that, pipes are way too short, internal baffles are way to restrictive plus, you need a fork brace ;D
The most a 'stock*' engine can do is 105mph, maybe a tiny bit more if your small enough to 'wrap' around the tank ;)

* (by stock I mean stock bore, stock cam, stock carbs, maybe a tiny bit of clean up in intake port and cleaning up exhaust port)

Thanks for your replies guys. After my initial post I found a thread explaining why Ebay pods suck worse than Uni/K&Ns so I definitely won't be trying to use them.

The fork brace just isn't on yet....don't worry I won't ride without it.

I'm not looking for max performance from this bike as it's just for getting around town. I'm willing to accept working with flat-spots and slight power loss as long as it starts, idles, and pulls through the gears. Are you guys saying this isn't possible with this setup?

I've seen this build http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=30056.0 and it looks like he's running a similar setup as I plan to (stock carbs, pods, headers only).

Yeah I agree.......

Any comments on being able to run this setup? I could google for more bikes like that but I'm sure you've all seen them before. I noticed CrazyPJ had actually commented in a few of the threads.

No doubt about it. The Spartan is a stunning build.

Unless you are stone cold deaf, without mufflers of some kind. Both, you and your neighbors w hate your bike by the end of this summer.

I dont care for the volume of my glass packs. And I (stuffed) repacked them myself after buying them new. They are still to loud for my taste.

But, if you do work on making it run "as is" please keep me posted of your progress and share any successful info you find. I would be very very interested.

Just be careful. When you find she is running rich in the midrange rpms and you start swapping in smaller secondaries from the stock 110s you may find at about 95 - 98 she gets too lean above 4000 and cracks valves. you will know when she gets too lean cause she will sound flat tone, and get poppy.

she will seem to run better at 35-4000 rpm but won't go over 60 mph give or take.
