CB360 - working on it on the weekends

Bench sync is not good enough. Sync the carbs to eliminate that as an issue. When my carbs are out of sync, my symptoms are similar to yours.

By shut off valves you mean the petcock? I don't think it has to do with anything there, no chance for anything to get in there, gas is new and tank is clean, and it ran okay before, so I think if it was that it would have appeared earlier.

So here's what I know:

Bike starts up okay, first start up of the day I usually start it without the choke, flip it on for a bit, then turn off the choke and she'll fire up. Idle seems okay, idle screws and fuel/air screws have been tweaked but don't resolve the problem.

When the throttle is revved, the bike is slow to rise in rpm and sounds like it's belching, or like a deeper growl instead of the sharp quick sound that it should be. Most notable at low end rpm, just off idle rising up, becomes less noticeable as the throttle is twisted. Same thing when riding, in first gear starting out bike is slow to get on the power, and into third and on has no acceleration; I can be twisting the throttle wide open and the needle will twitch around 40 mph, rpms don't sound right at that point, and doesn't want to go over 50.

Sometimes when throttle is revved, the bike will return to idle slowly, idle will be much lower than before revved, and sometimes will die on its own. When I took it out of the shop to take it around the block, it died once I popped it into first with the clutch in, maybe something to do with the throttle at low rpms again?

Carbs: secondary mains are now new 120s, pilot jets were taken out and cleaned (left side looked a bit dirty). Mechanic thinks one pilot looks a little bigger than the other. Carb sync hasn't been adjusted since getting them from crazypj, but haven't been messed with enough to think they'd be too off. Float heights are at about 20mm, clips were fixed and are working okay.

Air filters were cleaned and oiled last week (K&Ns), intake manifolds have been sprayed with solvent and no leaks detected.

What I'm wondering is I sprayed solvent on the exhausts to see if they were both firing and it looked like they were, but it runs like it was when only one cylinder was firing. I didn't get the chance to check the plugs because I had to leave early in a hurry, but that definitely has to be done next time.

I think by "shutoff valves" he means the float needle. It shuts fuel off when the float makes it's way to the place you set it at. If crud gets stuck around the "cone" shape that shuts off, it leaves it open and bam, too much fuel.

Found issue with Brendon's, one coil failed when hot but was fine when cold
He has new coils and condensers on order

I'm getting intermittent spark from both sides, the points are sparking well but the performance of the plugs don't line up, left side just won't fire at all sometimes, right side is weak occasionally. Crazypj, which coils/condenser did Brendon go with to replace them? I figure since so many people have issues with the stock coils I might as well spend some money to upgrade this part; the coils on right are stock and beatup looking. Also looking to upgrade most likely, not just get OEM. Anyone have recommendations?

He's probably going to get Dyna coils although it's running fine with points and coils off my bike at present
Here's pic of coil I took off, you can see the insulation has bubbled out

Mikes XS Yamaha coils are a much cheaper alternative and what I would probably use though

Yeah my coils look more beat up then that, would these be a good fit for my bike?

http://www.mikesxs.net/product/17-6805.html

In replacing the condenser, can I just order OEM from a Honda dealer or is there a better alternative?

They get good reviews, lot of people here have switched to them.
May as well get condensors as well, they should be matched to coils

Is there a matched condensor I should get for those MikesXS? How do they match?
Another thing I was wondering; if the guy making electronic ignition for CB360s gets them done and I decide to buy a kit, is there anything I have to watch out for in terms of what coils and all that? I'd probably buy the electronic ignition once it comes out so something I'm thinking of

Also, my mechanic had some rearsets from a GSXR laying around from a guy who couldn't use them on his bike, said I could have them if I could figure out how to work them with a shifter, linkage, etc. Sweet! ;D ;D

Trying to figure out where/how to mount them with zipties to mock them up

It's probably a 22microfarad but capacitance may vary depending on coil resistance, you get a reverse EMF when secondary field collapses

I'll be honest, I don't understand these words you're speaking haha ???

I'm kind of out of my element on this one (more so than other cases), I just assumed I could get those MikesXS coils or something from DCC and a condenser and just mount them and go, but then I was reading this thread:

http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=14267.0

Is there any reason I'd want to stick with the OEM condenser? Little more pricey at the dealer, but worth it in any way (ease, function)? Seems Dynas are the good stuff but I'm okay with not spending that much, the MikesXS should be a huge improvement on the 35+ old coils anyways.

So I need to pick up two coils, a condenser, and plug wires for both coils? (those are the blue/yellow on the bike)?

Got the MikesXS parts quicker than I expected, ordered them Monday night I think and got them Thursday. In the shop today, got the basic idea for how to mount them to the bike from someone else on the forum and came up with this

Fits fine, tank goes right over, just cut out some bar stock and drilled holes in it to fit the different spacing

Unfortunately, didn't get to see how it worked because I didn't have any 2-1 bullet connectors and none of the shops I went to had any in the right size. Hoping to find some tomorrow and go back in and wire it up and see what happens

Not much to report, got the bullet connectors from Sonreir in the mail today (thanks again!) and went to the shop and wired up the coils. Getting a beautiful blue spark on the left but right side isn't firing (which I think was backwards from before) so I'm pretty sure it's the points. Didn't have too much time today to mess around with them, but I'm feeling positive 8)

Embarassing story today, went in to mess around with the points to get her fired up, so pulled out the appropriate tools and got to work. After a while of staring at the points trying to get them gapped and timed right, it seemed I couldn't get both right, just one or the other. No spark on either side at the points. Since the part where the screw goes in was broken and the points looked a little rough, I pulled the points from the other motor out and stuck those in. Now the embarassing part: pulled the gas tank off, and realized my left side points wire had come undone :-[ Got the points screwed in, adjusted, gapped, and hit the starter switch. Spark! Sprayed some cleaner, screwed the covers back on, gas tank and seat on, tried to start her up. Oh right...gas. Poured some gas in, and after fiddling with the choke for a bit, fired up. Turned the throttle....oh yes...crisp, sounds amazing, I had forgotten that lovin' feeling of both cylinders firing together and giving me that response. Geared up, took her for a ride down the block. Felt good, power whenever I twisted the throttle, had good pull even when I was in too high a gear for the speed, idle sounded strong. Clutch engage zone is a little thin, so that'll have to be fixed, but running great.

Going back in tomorrow morning to put new plugs in and give her a good run, see how the plugs look and just have some fun with it. Knock on wood I start and finish the ride on two wheels! ;D

Also thinking about trying to make it to a few bike meets that are going on tomorrow, one's early in the morning at 8 and another's later in the day around 2, neither time is ideal for me, plus I think I want to do more riding than standing around in a parking lot. It would give me a destination though

Remember the rule: If you take your tank off, a wire comes loose somewhere on the bike....

I hate that rule, but nevertheless, it happens to all of us.

Brendon took tank off his last week to tape up wiring, blue wire from points 'fell out'
He spent a couple of days messing with it, I turned up with multi-meter which I didn't need as I found 'problem' in minute or two

Had a great ride today, couldn't sleep at all so went in early in the morning to the shop, wiped her down with a rag, and started her up. No issues, warmed up right away while I put on my helmet and rode off. I'm a little rusty from not having ridden in a few weeks, but after putting in a few dollars worth of gas I rode to the local canyon roads where all the Harley guys were doing their Sunday cruises. Bike pulled nicely up hill, definitely had to check my speed at some points, good acceleration out of curves and uphill (once I was in the right gear ::) ) Rode through the canyon, filled up properly at a gas station that would take card, stretched, bathroom break, checked for leaks (on the bike) and then rode some more through the city to the coffee shop.

I've definitely missed this feeling, since the bike was running on one cylinder and running rough with intermittent spark I could yank on the throttle and go nowhere. Now I had great pull at the lights, bike sounded great, and I had fun freaking drivers out with the exhausts burning dust and oil off the outside. After some coffee and chatting with the barista who was a cute girl who happened to know about cafe bikes as well 8) pulled out of the parking lot, got on the freeway to head back. Bike rode great on the freeway, enough power if I needed to pass a car, good revs, nothing too high and managed to keep up with traffic (even though I was getting blown around a bit). Fun times, pulled back into the shop parking lot with a huge smile on my face and tapping a drum solo on the ground with my feet.

Bike feels good, but planning to put in new plugs next week (which I should've done this morning but I forgot) and check the color, possibly a sync if needed, tape up some wires to hopefully prevent them from falling out, then after some more riding I can start figuring out rearsets. Also need new tires soon, rear end was acting kind of squirrely at times.

If I was riding cross country, I'd take my NH750, it is smoother and better riding. However, it is not half the fun the 360 is for just riding around. I always have a grin on my face on the cb360. When she is running sweet, there is nothing better in the world.

You can't beat a 360 for fun factor. There are tons of bikes out there that do thing better, but the 360 just has soul; a certain esoteric "something" upon which you you can't quite place a finger. One of the finest two-wheeled machines in the world.
