You lucked out, dude. Now get on eBay and find yourself some new rings. :D

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. Engine teardown started: LOTS OF PHOTOS

I have been looking for a good replacement shock for the rear end and I came across this on ebay:

Has anyone even heard of these and what are some thoughts on the quality. I am looking for something more modern that will improve the performance. I also want to rase the rear end just a little like an inch, (not enough to change the geometry too much). If anyone can point me towards something better that wont break the bank I would be grateful.

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. SHOCKS

Nice work so far.....
I was looking at the same ones on EBAY, they seem to look pretty worthy and the price is right even with the 30 bucks for shipping. I will stayed tuned to see if u get them and how they work.

Yeah, I got my finger on the trigger 8) . I am just waiting to make absolutely sure that they will fit. I am going to take some measurements when I get to the shop tonight, if they will fit I think I am going to pick them up.

So scratch that ^ the machinist was wrong. the pitting was bad enough that it would require boring to keep from using oil :p . Lucky for me I have a spare set of cylinders so I am just going to hone them out and use them instead. I also got the pistons cleaned and ready for new rings and install.

The rings were a PITA to get out (due to them being rusted in tight). I ended up soaking them in vinegar to loosen the rust a little and then digging them out. The end result turned out pretty clean.

In other news I got the my rims off to powder today they are going to be a deep red.

I need to get some spokes but I am having a hard time finding a good place to get quality for a good price. Suggestions?

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. WHEELS

Has anyone ever used davidsilverspares.co.uk before? I am thinking about getting spokes from them as the have them for about $35US. I just dont have the funds to get spokes from Buchanan.

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. WHEELS

Last night I tore into the crank case, it was cool to get to see the gearing that is something I have not messed around with before. Everything looks really good in there, it is all tight and clean, no wear on anything. I might replace the crank/rod bearings if I can find a place to get them but they really dont look like they need it.
Here are some photos of the tear down:

I think I am just going to pull it all apart, clean everything, paint the case and reassemble with the new oil seals I got.

One UN-lucky bug, hahaha ;D (wonder how long it was in there)

So I ended the day when I broke the screwdriver tip on the plate at the bottom of the oil pan (didnt strip the screw, screw won and broke the screwdriver  ). I figured that was a good sign that I should call it a night, the wife was calling also since it was around 11:00.

So I also got the valves out (I will post some pictures of that next) but I dont know how to remove the valve stem seals ??? ? Anyways I will be cleaning the valves tonight and would like to assemble it with my new seals as soon as I can. Also is there a preference on high-temp paint for the engine, and what is the most durable to gas and oil spills?
Thanks all

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. CRANK CASE

The seals have a holder that's bolted in. When the holder is out they should pull out with a pair of pliers. Unless you're talking about the guides and not the seals. I used duplicolor engine enamel on my engine and the carbs leaked onto it. If wiped off fast the paint is ok but if left on the paint will melt off.
Next engine I'll try baking in the oven when my wife is out of town...

I took out the holder bolt, I was just under the impression that the seals are the part that run along the valve stem and hold it tight.
I got some duplicolor enamel today so I am going to try that. What tep should you bake it at and for how long?

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. CRANK CASE

The seals sit on top of the valve stem they have a metal outside and a black rubber ring inside. I don't know much about baking paint. I just did my triple trees as a test at 170 for 1 hour, the paint seems more solid. I tried to put my forks in but ended up scratching the crap out of them. That is probably for the better because if fork oil leaked in the oven I don't think my wife would be very happy about it.

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. CRANK CASE

Valve stem seals should be a push fit over the top end of the valve guide. You may have to remove the valve guide stops to get at them, but I doubt it.

Okay I have a picture:

So in this picture is the "Valve guide seal cap" the valve stem seal? If so I tried just pulling it out with my fingers and it wouldn't budge, so I left it to pursue help here so I wouldnt damage anything. Do I need to use pliers?
Thanks all.

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. CRANK CASE

So like I said before I got all the valves out and I am now in the process of cleaning them, I am soaking them in vinegar to loosen the grime then I will take a wire brush to them to get the rest.
Here are some shots of the dirty valves before cleaning.

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. VALVES

So over the weekend I got some painting done, the head, jug, crank case. I used "Dupli-Color" paint and finished by baking them in the oven at 200˚ for 20 minutes then 300˚ for another 20. They look awesome, I will get you all some photos tomorrow I want to start reassembly this week. 8)

Re: CB450 Café Racer Build. SPOKES

So I got my rims back from powder they look awesome I will have pictures soon. What I am thinking now is spokes. Tell me if I am crazy because I have no idea about this stuff, question is can someone use (if right length is found) BMX spokes for there motorcycle? They come in all kinds of colors and are built to take an immense amount of abuse/stress. Any thoughts, and remember I am throwing this out there because I really have no clue. ;D

EDIT: So regardless of the strength, I dont think that there is anything out there that is the right gauge for a motorcycle, at least not that I could find. :p oh well
