Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Stripped the chair toda y to get at the shock ...... turns out it is not a collapsed C50 unit but is actually a functioning (springing and damping) heavy duty unit. So I just put the whole thing back together and chocked it up.

That yard stick is a proper job European Union approved Metre ............. Jeeeeeeeeeesus it's wider than a pimps flares! Even at the non European 1855 Weights and Measures Act 36" it's pretty fly.
Anyhow here's the pictures, height of what will become the main central lower mount is 10 1/4" with the floor 'pan' level with the planet. Dunno, what do you think?

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Have platform tilting down towards bike an inch or so.
That way, if you pick up a fat chick it will be level when suspension moves ;D

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Thanks for that top tip Pj, but this sidecar is so infeasibly small, I think a fat lass would have trouble getting on to it.

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

It's a full on sideways rain gale here tonight and the prospect of going out to the garage to fettle has lost its attraction.
And it is nearly beer o'clock.

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

I've been looking on you tube at all the different sidecars fitted to Honda CG's from around the world.
The size of some of the rigs is crazy and it's amazing what people get these bikes to haul.
One thing for sure is ............ By hook or by crook, I've got to seriously get the track widened out.

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Cracked on with the centre extension today. This will now give me a track of exactly 1 metre.

I did clean the galve away before tacking! :)

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Cool beans 8)
Even a meter is pretty narrow, should be fun as soon as you get used to it ;D

Now you tell me! ;)
Well it's still wider than the 25" is was.
I was going to just cut off and weld the plug in the first 6" of the chairs centre tube, but now I'm thinking of running it all the way through the whole width. the extra weight would help and it would make it a very strong mainstay.
Dunno, what do you think?

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

That might be a good idea.
The weight weight increase will be minimal but more strength is a good thing, particularly while your learning to drive ;)
If you go much wider it will look too weird, sidecar is too small to be 'divorced' from bike ;D
Just get a big bag/box of sand or take someone 'daring' first time out (150 lbs or so)
Get weight over chair wheel, person is probably best, they can always bail on you ;D ;D
One thing, a temporary fitting on outside nose of chair can help prevent arse over tit on right handers. front wheel off a shopping trolley so when back wheel lifts it stays more or less upright.
The Kawasaki outfit I had used a 2" thick block of steel as a slider, it got a lot of use 8)

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

If you get a chance, could you do me a sketch of how a 'slider' would be fitted?
Sounds like a good idea.
Still a way off getting it all fitted up though, I'm waiting on some gate eyes with a 16mm thread that will slide nicely through the old centre stand bushes to arrive. Only then will I know what shape the front engine mount needs to be.
Cheers :)

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Oh, and post a picture of your Kwacker outfit ..... or was that before they got cameras in the valleys ;)

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

For a 'slider', get it all mounted up then push on front outside 'corner' while someone tries to lift back of bike
You'll see what needs doing ;)

I've only got one pic of Kwaker, posted a couple of times.
I was living in Brynna when I had it
It was actually owned by shop I worked in (Two Wheel Services)
It was too wide to fit through showroom doors and they wouldn't leave it sitting outside overnight, it would have been 'missing' or vandalised
'Unfortunately', I was the only one there who could drive outfits 8)
130mph, 9mpg flat out, 600 miles to a front tyre.
Almost lost it a few times on Waterton roundabout ;D ;D ;D
Hell of a lot of fun
Taught all the boys in workshop to drive it (Ford lorry park, lunch time 'treat' ;D 8) )
80+ on Ford link road off A48, Dene screaming in chair as he was watching lamp posts go past sideways ;D

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Fair play PJ you're 'kin better off out of it it.
I've been round the waterton roundabout sideways in a stupid twin cam warrior mk I Ford Escort and that was enough to get my sphincter pukkering.
I think you moving to the land of straight roads and intersections has increased your life expectancy by quite a large margin.

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

I found corners ;D 8)

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

The rear mount and attachment bar is done, needs to be chopped down to slug into the chair but as it stands that's a metre track. Look wide enough?

P1040013.jpg

P1040014.jpg

I made a start on the new engine mount, I've kept it very long as I'm not sure where the front lower mount will line up.

P1040015.jpg

Pj/Tj ..... when you were saying the chair should slope inwards towards the bike, were you being serious or just taking the piss?

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Yep/nope?
If you have suspension on sidecar , the platform should be 'high' on the wheel side so it sits level when loaded.
Bike should also be leaning in slightly as it will be upright when suspension compresses.
Width looks good.
Front lower mount probably needs to go between engine mounting bolts and upper mount as close oto steering head as you can get it.
Your looking for maximum triangulation
There's a lot more to setting up chair than just bolting it on ;D (you still have to deal with lead and toe ;D )
It's worth it when it's done though

Re: CG125 Decaf - sidecar questions?

Thanks for that Pj bach.
I've progressed on the heavy duty front mount, but it was too late this evening to break out the angle grinder and starting to shape it.

P1040018.jpg

P1040019.jpg

The distance between the rear cradle mount and the bottom of the front down tube is about 32 cm ctc
And the distance between the centre tube of the chair and the front tube is 40 cm ctc
Hmmm
The current stub on the front chair tube is slightly bent rearwards and I'm hoping that it may close that discrepancy down when the extension reaches the front mount. That stub is threaded 12mm and I'm considering using a tie rod to connect this mount?
Other than that I shall be mostly drinking Brains Original Stout tonight.

Re: CG125 Decaf - more sidecar questions?

Put it together for a quick peek at how things lay.
Looks like I'm going to have to extend the floor pan inwards a little to get rid of the chasm of doom.
How the hell am I going to make the diagonal top mounting tube meet up with the steering head ...... it's pointing miles forward??

Re: CG125 Decaf - more sidecar questions?

Replied to your PM.
Basically, use a curved tube to get diagonal lower and rearwards.
Make sure you turn forks full lock to check for clearance.
I would probably weld a plate to side of steering head in front of tank
Is the rear mount adjustable for angle? fit it in front of shock
You know platform needs to be lower in front, looks good so far for a quick mock up though.
I really want one for Yam now ;D
