CG125 OHV Build Oddessy

Re: CG125 Decaf - more sidecar questions?

I've been thinking and it maybe less hassle to just get more tube and weld on a whole new diagonal that goes straight to where it needs to be.
The rear mount is a bodge and I'll grind it off and put a new one on the new section of floor pan.

Re: CG125 Decaf - more sidecar questions?

Not very good pictures as it was dark and I had to rush, but the subframe is now extended back out courtesy of an old wheel barrow frame. I'm quite pleased with the shape of it.

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Cracking on ...... picked up a fresh cutting disk and a new 12mm drill today :)

Made a first version of a chain tensioner ( Pj Garw stylee) so I can finish putting the back end together.
A unlikely concoction involving an office table leg, a skateboard wheel, a CD175 lower engine plate and a 50 cent spring.
How wrong can it go.

If the chain fouls I have plan B waiting in the wings. (A cranked CD 175 upper engine plate)

Tomorrow I'll finalise where the chair will mount to the front engine plate, Then on to the top mount.
I keep on forgetting I have this clap to factor into the equation.
I can feel a 3/4" gate eye is going to be making an appearance.

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

I worked out the positioning for the front mounts today. I set it up with a toe-in of 1".
The broom stick is the kind of positioning for the new diagonal top mount.

Happy New Year Gents! Here's it to being a vast improvement on 2011 :)

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Looks good to me, bit of mesh on the floor extension, weld it all up and have fun in the mud

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

I've made some progress on the engine mount while I continue to hunt down some M12 forged eye bolts.
I've also been practising my welding and learning how not to blow holes in things .

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

You don't want eye bolts, just use a piece of 1/2" thick plate, drill one end and tap 8mm then a through hole 10mm 90 degrees to tapped hole(basically make a special nut)
Alternatively, just weld a piece`where you have eye bolt, you can weld full width and shape wit angle grinder (or shape, bolt up and use sidecar mount to get angles correct/position)

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

I'm holding out on the eyebolts, a couple of people went out of their way to source them for me, so I don't want to get a rep as a time waster ..... In the meantime while I wait I got on with the side panels today. They're looking a bit box fresh and squeaky at the mo, but I'm sure after a few adventures and with the addition of some stickers they'll chill.

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Picked up the eye bolts today. Hope to make some progress this weekend.
Not sure where to take the rear mounting point off the sub frame though.

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

long plate behind shock mounting all the way to mudguard mount, extended forwards slightly so diagonal is directly over tube gussets?
Frame may be strong enough it that area without reinforcement?
Maybe make a new diagonal tube to suit wider floor?
Front down tube looks pretty flimsy now you have lower engine mount 'done'

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Yup, the front tube will defo need some bracing too once we see how the new main diagonal chair tube sits.
The rear sub frame is quite well braced from side to side up by the shocks, although as suggested it will probably need additional braces back to the center spine.

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Brace about level with the bottom of side covers you made
You may need to brace rear frame between shocks, the original bracing isn't designed for side loads

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Went out to the garage to finish off the bottom of the engine mount.
It was subzero.
Came back in and cracked open a cold Guinness instead.

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Not just any Guinness ....... Guinness Foreign Extra (7.5%)
:) :)

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Progress, got the main upper tube ready for welding, then to turn attention to the rear mount from the shocker area to the back of the chair. I'm not sure how much lean out to preset with?

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Made the last strut today, unhooked the bike and took it back home, spend 2 hours winding a 16 mm nylock nut on to the central eye bolt laying on my back under the bike moving 1/8" turn at a time. Now to tighten everything, hook up the brakes ignition electrics and carb etc and the light is at the end of the tunnel.

How close to vertical should the lean out be when loaded with pilot and monkey?

Re: CG125 Decaf - Necessity is the mutha

Can't find the clutch cable nipple ANYWHERE :( :(
Damnit.

I've been getting the bike re-commissioned and general snagging. I made a new ignition loom with fresh wire and connectors, to replace the old one which was simply hacked out of the original loom and had no less than five (5!) earth wires.
Fired up after about a dozen kicks on a dry carb with stale petrol and 0 degrees air temp.
It smoked like a locomotive for a few mins then started burning clean.
Still need a rear brake rod as well so a trip to the breakers is due.

Look at the picture and think 'putt putt putt putt putt putt putt'

Re: CG125 Decaf - Wtf is my nipple?

Go To local model shop and get a short piece of 3/8" brass.
Drill a hole through it then cut to size and solder onto cable
OR, get a screw type 'temporary fix' nipple and remove screw so you can solder it on (most bike shops have them
