CM400T Cafe >FINISHED!

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - HOME STRETCH

So it's back together and I had it running again, but the down time wasn't good to the carbs.

Rather than pull them off Clean and or Rebuild and re-install only to find out I will never get it running right with my pods and open exhaust. I made the the decision that all this effort deserved a set of Mikuni VM30's. Ordered extra Jets beyond the extra jets that come with the kit.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - HOME STRETCH

I have a bunch of questions about the carb setup. Please post some detailed info on the swap after it's done. I think it's something that will be greatly appreciated by more than just me.

Will do Big Dog, it seems like it is the missing link to a barely baffled & podded CM/CB. During mock up I had it running with my pipes and pods and seemed ok with "Runs around the neighborhood" but admittedly wasn't really road tested. After all the work I will have put into this build I can't cheap out now.

I missed their delivery today and it requires "in person signature" so I have it set up to pick up at a FedEx location after work tomorrow. CANT WAIT

I picked up this cool Stainless "T" or "Y" necessary for the fuel supply

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - HOME STRETCH

OK, so the final 2 things are the seat & and the Carbs....Making progress on both.

Starting with a 1968 - 1973 CB350 CL350 Sudco Kit

Here is how I have approached the VM30's so far.

My kit did not come with VM30 Mounting Flanges . I'm not sure I would have used them anyway to be honest. The VM30 Spigots are 40mm and the OEM Carb Spigots/Flange openings are 43mm. The VM30 Flange Mounting Hole Center to Center Distance is 60mm. the Head Stud Distance is 67mm

I like that the flange throat on the OEM mounts are effectively matched to the head port, and while I have no scientific basis, I also liked the idea that the "expansion" will occur right after the smaller spigot of the VM30 Carbs, vs after the VM30 Flange.

So I decided to fit the Carbs to the flange instead of the flanges to the head. I bought a small bicycle tube and cut 2 bands out of it about 1/2 wide then slipped them over the VM spigot and then trimmed to the edge with a razor blade. The "Rubber Band" made them fit just snug enough that I needed to put a little oil on the bands to slip them into the flange without them moving/bunching.

The "Bands" seemed to take up the 3mm difference very well. Even though with the bands the Carbs were snugly mounted the method concerned me "down the road". I decided to utilize the Carb mounts. I "Racked" them so to speak, with a piece of 1/4" all thread rod, 2 1/4" Coupling Nuts w washers (on inside of carbs) and 2 Stainless Cap Nuts with washers (on the outside). REALLY stiffened things up & I like the added security and kinda finishes the look IMO.

I too lost the 6 dangling pink "Spider Leg" vent lines". Since I don't really have an accent color I went with clear. I ran the 4 vent & 2 bowl overflow lines all the way down as the original overflow lines did. I also moved the 4 Vent Tabs/Holders (The things mounted with the bowl screws). I moved them to the back sides of the carbs to facilitate running the vent lines with the bowl overflow lines.

I was feeling a little apprehensive about the "Universal" Dual throttle that appears to have come with both are "Kits"> I like the quality of the aluminum splitter but did not like the idea of Finishing the ends of the 3 cables. Then I lost the little bag of the ends (@!#&%!) so I ordered a Parts Unlimited VM30 "Finished" Dual Throttle Cable, (Part #922).

I am hoping I can maybe use the Universal Splitter to make a Choke Cable later on. The VM30 Carbs Only come in a "Left" mount type with choke and adjustment on left side of carb.

The Special "T" I bought worked slick as hell, Hard to explain, I will post pics soon.

that carb setup looks pretty slick.

They better do more than look slick ...lol.
Can't wait to get the cable and find out....

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - HOME STRETCH

I'm curious to see how well it runs also, should do pretty good.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - HOME STRETCH

Nice job on those carbs. I'm hoping I can get my CM running good enough on the Keihin's, but I have a feeling I'll be doing the same conversion eventually. I 'll start looking for some kind of rubber hose or bushing that I can use to fill the gap. I like the idea of trying to keep the original manifolds too.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - HOME STRETCH

I found this video randomly a few weeks back when I was worried my Cm400 wouldn't make as much power as I would of liked. Then I saw this and was like "Yeah, should be enough" lol

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - HOME STRETCH

Frankenfe, I want to thank you for this thread. When I first got my Cm400, I was finding it very difficult to find out much information about these bikes, especially modifying them. You have done a lot of the same things I have been trying to research on, and have saved me quite the head ache. Thanks man, and I look forward to you completing this project.
