College kid with a Norton Atlas

Hey everybody I just found a 1964 Norton Atlas Basket case with 8520 miles, an hour from where I go to school to become a mechanical engineer. Needless to say I just got home with a Norton on my trailer. I'm definitely going to need some help and guidance if I decide to restore it. So is there any Norton experts out there? The tank is really nice only has one major dent and rust free. I haven't seen the engine yet its buried in the guys garage I bought it from hes going to find it for me later this week. I'm really excited to own this bike though. Does anyone know how much it is roughly worth being a basket case? Any info you can give me would be awesome.

Dare I say it - this could be a thread where NortonGuy could actually contribute something that didn't suck balls.
 
The guy also threw in the other bike which I can't find a make on it but it says type one on the engine and its a twin maybe Kawasaki? The frame has been hacked up and raked out into a chopper but its been laid over and is roached ill probably salvage the carbs and anything else and scrap it. It was last inspected in 1972 so I know its old.
 
First one is a Norton P11 or matchless with Norton engine. Still a nice find. They did use a Norton Atlas motor in a Matchless chassis with Norton forks IIRC. Known colloquially as the Desert Sled. it has no value and i will take it off your hands to save you the shame. No? OK so there are people who will pay top dollar for one in museum quality and that's not hard to do if it's all there and you take your time. Or find a Norton guy looking for a project and let them take care of it after they pay you a reasonable price.

The other is a 305cc cb77 Honda Superhawk or CB72 250cc Hawk. Type 1 indicates twin points and a 180 degree crank. Without "Type 1" it's a 360 degree crank CL77 or CL72. What are the first letters/digits on the engine and frame numbers?
 
Thanks for the info Teazer! The reason why I think the Norton is a 64 atlas is the serial number on the frame which is a 110730. But the front fender and the tank look like those p11 Nortons, so you may be correct Teazer! Also the other bike does say "type 1" on the right hand side cover on the head so I'm sure that your correct on that it is a Honda Hawk or Super hawk. I will look at it closer in the morning, I was more interested in the Norton and the Honda was just a plus.

i sold one last year out of my stash it was a 66 norton

in rolling shape but missing the trans and primary chain case

the engine was complete magneto there carbs there

i live in north carolina and a guy from texas jumped in his truck crove 20 hrs straight to get it and

paid me 2500 dollars

Wow that's great, 8) if I can get that much for this one I might have to talk the admin moving this into a classified listing. After class I'm planning to take it over to the car wash to see what I'm really working with and Ill get some decent picture up aswell. Id really like to get this bike at least back on the road before I get rid of it, but the plan is to eventually sell it.

appraise what you have then make a few informed choices

it may be that if its a valuable model bike that anything you do to it may reduce its value so know what you are doing

if you need to check pm me and while i am not sure about all things british i can give you contacts that can set it straight

and give you accurate info
 
I'm interested. My dad is a total Norton and brit bike geek. Might have some info for you when you figure out exactly what you have.

I'm pretty sure that most/all the Atlases came on featherbed frames, which your frame is not. I sent these pics to dad but what I think you have there is more of a P11 with some kind of matchless frame. The tank looks just like the tank on his P11.

The frame is Matchless and not what I think a P11 looks like so it is probably a 65 on Matchless G15 which used a Norton Atlas motor.

Thanks for all the great info! It looks like I own a matchless. I wonder if I can get some money back cause its not the Norton I thought I bought. Also I don't know if you can tell from the pictures but the fenders are ribed and the tanks was originally red.
 
IMHO, Don't be stressing if it's a Matchless and not a Norton. Do some homework, the links Teazer provided are great background info. You'll be running a Norton engine, trans, etc. You will still end up with a really great vintage brit bike. It's not about the resale value, Nortons can still be found at somewhat reasonable prices. It's about what you decide to do with it. Will it be a classic restoration, an era-correct mod, or something else?
 
Canyoncarver that was more of a joke. ;D I realize that either way I have a good foundation for a vintage British bike. But as far as the restoration I'd like to go back to stock, but that's depending on the parts I find and of course $$$.
 
Ha. Gotcha. Unfortunately Domi-Racer is now out of business. They were a go-to source for tons of brit stuff. They liquidated their stock but I'm sure you can source most of what you need.

Well I got the damn thing washed up and most of the grease and grime off of it. Here's some better pictures.
Now I have to contain myself until I go pick up the engine tomorrow night. That's the main deciding factor, the amount of parts that he has and if I can make it run. 8)
