CR500 , 2 stroke hardtail chopper project

It was legendary to ride. I had a few AMA pros and even 2 motoGP riders that were jealous a wanted to ride it,

Unfortunately I sold it. I sold my share of a motorcycle parts retail business and lost my free racing pass in the process. So my racing days are over.

Truth be told, the chassis was Ben spies' bike back when he raced 125GP class in our club. He was the gp rider that got to do a lap on it.

I would like to build a tracker using the crf450r motor in 70s chassis 350 maybe.... I love the guys who throw the cr kx 500's and aluminum frame super motos.... So sick

Righty tight, lefty loosey, pick up your tools and get it done.

Some (many) years ago we were down in TX for an Aprilia Cup race ( I was crew chief not racing) and a teenage Spies was in one race I remember on a TZ I think and he just stood out from the crowd. Smooth, fast and making it look easy.

I forgot that cafe racers tend to be clues minded about anything but cafe racers. Luckily there are still many people on this forum that like the project and want to see it updated. I'll continue to update and debate critics.

To be fair, this site has a huge range of people and experience. Some have been here for a while and you can see their bikes and thinking evolve. There are others who are less experienced because this is a site that tracts them and that's OK too. They just haven't started to learn what they don't know.

I think that the comments about your build are from people who are concerned for you and your safety and are genuinely trying to be helpful, though it may not always come across that way. It's not easy on a forum like this to tell someone that their design looks wrong without coming across as an ass or worse.

Just keep it coming and we'll all add our thoughts and opinions and concerns and the bottom line is that you know what you are doing and will do what you want with that input. Any racer or former racer is OK in my book. Racers who build bikes or modify them tend to be thinkers and are more prepared to try things than others probably because they have a better understanding of what's involved and the risks of getting it wrong. Or am I just rationalizing things again?

Have a good one.

Got a few parts put on tonight. I like how it's looking. That headlight is actually old and has a brass housing, not just trim ring. I'll polish it at some point but for now the paint looks perfect I have other stuff to do that's a bigger priority. Can come back to that.

I can't wait to do my leatherwork this week. I'm working with my buddy who is a world class boot maker. Seat is the biggest missing object in the picture.

Show winner. This is coming off way cool. The headlight, colors, and rear fender are 1930's and the rest is..well not 30's. Great mix of oddments, and the non-chopper sound perfect. My only question/comment of concern is, I'd be worried that any bump (not a lot of suspension) would knock my foot loose from the forward pedals and turn my leg around backwards as it hit the road? Maybe a small heel cup?
Cheers, 50gary

Thanks, I got that awesome (still unidentified) tank on ebay and that really set he tone for sheet metal. I had an even older gas brass headlight but it wasn't quite right. It's gonna look better when I peel off that paint, but I'm on a deadline.

I really like the balance too. It's really gonna pop when I do the brass trim rings around the blue embossed glass "stop" light.

Oh and I wear boots everyday. The heel of my boot locks Into that pedal perfectly just like a saddle stirrup. But I suppose even cowboys fall out if the saddle on a bucking bronco.

coming from a design background i definitely dig your project.
this isnt about handling or geometry its about creating something that makes your pants tighter when you twist your wrist.

diggin it

It's not "how it handles", it's "how you handle IT"

my dad rides a old old flh 1200 harley shovel.

from many other riders conceived as a big pile of heavy scrap metal i always laugh at them when i see how he outrides them.

its definitely about skill.

indeed i am looking forward to a ride report as well :D
remember you are on a recumbant, and being so close to the ground, if you lose the front i don't think it will end well if you put out a foot, especially with heals....

I'm a road racer, I don't stick out a foot. I've saved a low side with my knee more than a couple of times.

Nice heals joke though.

Just an idea on the design of the foot pedals. Have you thought about splitting them so that there is a raised peg in the centre on which your foot can rest. With the pedal an inch lower all it would take is shifting your heel back or toe forward the slightest bit more, yet it would be safer then trying to balance your foot in the right spot. Should also help with the slipping.

I can draw up a diagram if you don't understand what I mean. Not the best at explaining things.

That was an idea someone had. It's possible. I'm not ruling that out, but first I'm gonna put some miles on the bike to see if I get any signs of misshifts or accidental braking. At this point (bouncing around on my workbench) I feel pretty confident that the ergonomics allow me to move around on the bike without disturbing the pedals. Everyone is concerned about that so I will acknowledge the possibility, but I think my design deserves a few rides first.
