CX500 minor bob job - whooooot issues solved goes like a bat out of hell, for an old bike at least

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

Thanks, bike came with the airbox and jetted for it. I do know the jets are two different brands and have run into this before. One aftermarket brand the sizing numbers run 10 small so 118 would really be 108. I am going to order up some kiehins in 120 and replace the 115. I did put those in and got to 80mph. Didnt chop the plugs. The low to mid throttle is good now and no more surging or popping on throttle close. This bike doesnt have the cdi so if jetting doesnt fix the WOT I will have to look at what next could be the issue.

the smaller jet the 90 controls the throttle till almost wide open make sure you change both the 90s and the 120

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

Already got.90's in so if I can get a set of 120's I should be good.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

On that note, I no longer live close enough to a bike shop to order jets, when I did the 450 I got the jets for 2 bucks each no shipping so it was easy to order a bunch of sizes. So far all the online places are 3-9 bucks a piece with retarded shipping. Anyone know a good onlinse source for jets? I want to order 120, 122, and 125's just in case and at 9 ea and 14 shipping that gets pricey.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

you wont need bigger than 120

i get them at jets r us

you could try http://www.siriusconinc.com/ they are in canada so shipping might be less

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

Thanks, Jets R us, has OEM and Aftermarket, which do you use? The aftermarket seem to run small vrs oem. I know the 115's I have weren't drilled, the taper is perfect and they were slightly larger looking then the aftermarket 118's that came in the jet kit we got that had the air jet plug and spacer. I am now wondering if the 90's that came in the kit are actually smaller than the factory 85's that were in the bike.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

I had shop where I used to live where I ordered OEM Kiehin jets for 2.00 ea. I really don't want to pay 6+ a piece plus shipping. I will if I have too, but I want to make sure the 120 I get is really a 120. I think the aftermarket ones are not numbered the same. although it could just be the fact the older jets are darker than the new jets so look bigger? Hard to say but I got 5 mph more at WOT going to the 115 vrs the 118 and still lean as hell. all the way to 3/4 throttle the bike pulls hard and will redline in 1-3 almost redline in 4th at 3/4, going to full throttle does nothing and a chop of plugs shows it is way lean. I wonder if there is something else to check?? I may get to it again tonight, only got about an hour on the weekend, to many other projects got in the way.

I have a Pin Gauge set that I use to verify sizes. One of the large manufacturers (Keihin or Mikuni) measures the jets in mm and the other measures the flow rate, so two of the same jet sizes from different manufacturers will be different. And dynojet has their own numbers as well, throw in the aftermarket sets and you can have some trouble :p See if you can find a way to measure the 90's in the kit compared to the 85's...maybe a sewing needle or something so you can see the difference more easily?

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

That makes sense, I have read all that before, that is why I was wondering about the jets. I got the kit X - NZ and I wonder if the jets are slightly different. They were supposed to supply a main jet based on the combo of factory exhaust and K&N's, along with slide spacer, air jet plug and gasket, slow jet etc. but of course they can only guess so I am sure it is too small, the 120 sounds right if you base that step off the factory 115's in the bike, a full step from stock would make sense, I just need to make sure the damn Jet is off the same measurement and manufacturer as the factory size. The jets that came with the kit and the ones I have from other bikes are stamped on top with the size and a symbol. The oem's I have are all size stamped on the side with a different symbol.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

For a hoot I rode to the local honda dealer here, they are hit or miss but this time I hit, pack of 4 jets in 120 for 13 bucks, have them Wed. So I need to do the clutch springs and maybe plates as it is still slipping. I feel between the 2 of those things, I'll have her sorted and hauling ass. I need to change out the oil as I flushed the motor and put new oil in and I don;t want to run it too long without changing it again. Good time to do the springs.

Shit, went out to show a maintenance guy the bike and noticed my plate is gone, Shit, now I have to ride slow all the way home to see if I can find it.

Glad to hear it! Let's hear the good news when you get those put in!

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

No luck finding plate. Road home on the CX and didn't see it, then took the wing and road the route again. Bugger, now I have to spend forever at the DMV and spend 40-60 bucks I don't have. OH well. I am about to pull the clutch as it slipped like a bugger the whole ride home yesterday so I can't ride it with the clutch out. Need to see if springs alone will do it, which are cheap, or if I need plates. Of course the plates are the same as like 20 different Hondas but not the CM400/450 which I have a set of new ones for.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

Well after reading over the clutch portion of the manual, I think my slip may still be poor adjustment. I am going to check it one more time. I should have 1/4-1/2" slack in the lever and I know I don't right now, if I even just touch the lever it engages the clutch, and I thought I was out of adjustment room on the cable, we will see. if it is anything like the throttle. I am hazarding a guess that the cable is not for a CX and came from another bike. I will have to see. Once I put actual used CX cables on the throttle side that was 10x better.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

So I went home on my lunch hour to get the new plate. and in the process of looking for the registration discovered I had lost it somehow as well. Along with the gold wing's for fuck sake! So a $70 trip to the DMV later I have a new plate and new copy of rego for the wing. Jeebus that hurt. So a new better attached mount will be made. Aside from that I tried to ride the CX and the slip was so bad the bike will hardly move, I slacked the cable completely off and bike still slipped so something is up, so when I get the chance, hopefully tomorrow night when the jets arrive. I am thinking something is maybe loose or adjusted wrong inside. We'll see. I think I will order springs as they are like 14 a set for EBC, anyone have experience with them? I ordered oem on the 450 but they are pricey at 15 ea X 4.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

the ebc's are good, no complaints

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

Good to hear. Now about clutch adjustment, anything special there? I slacked it off until required play in lever, it still disengaged ok no drag, but slipped like a mofo?? if there is no trick to it, I will have to pull the cover and check things out.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

Not hard to get into the clutch on these.
Pull it and see what's what.
Getting close!

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

Yep Bozz you are right, I need to change out the oil I put in anyway. I has about 100 miles on it and should have all the crud removed from the engine, I have gasket material to make a new gasket too so it will be easy enough. I should just order the springs today and have them swapped even iff the old ones look ok too.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Road her to work, time to address issues

nothing to it with these clutches, as long as your cable is adjusted properly you should be good to go, BUT the whenever I get my hands on a CX, I swap out the clutch springs seeing as they are 30+ years old and probably never been changed. Not too long ago, compared one I took out to a new one that I was placing in it, there must have been a 1/4" difference between them
