Dig the seat Mike!

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

Thanks Guys. I got to have a Bradj original in my thread ;D Need to get to work on this girl. Weather is warming so I will be able to paint, before that I got to clean everything. Some small bits came in. Jet kit for pods. :LED flasher unit, Shinko 712's are ordered and on the way. K&N Pods. So I got one more wheel to prep. engine to clean, frame to finish cleaning and all the other little bits and pieces and then it will be full on 2-3 days of painting, then re-assembley, tuning and a ride!

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

Bradj, wasn't expecting to read an epic story in this thread... but it made my day :)

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

Hahahaha! That man needs to write screenplays.

But I don't have a little blue and orange honda anymore. So...I'm fucked. :-[

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

Shit, it's been 30 days since my last confession! Anyway, got the bathroom reno sorted, well found out the flange extender I used was not caulked right and shitty water was leaking into the basement, but fixed that and so I got some quality time with a grinder, simple green, acetone and spray cans. Smelled up the house and got shit for that but things got painted! Wheels done in Gunmetal wheel paint and frame and swing arm got hammered metal black. All in all a nice step forward. going to build the bike table to get ready for re-assembly soon. Should have noted I ground off a few tabs, passenger peg mounts, side cover brackets and center stand mounts, none of those will be going back on.

I didn't remember the CX having such a large radiator

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

Ha, Extra heat to help cure the paint. It was a tad cold but heat gun to warm part, hot water to warm paint then move them from the garage right next to the heater and is should be fine. only a few degrees cooler than reccomended on the can. Next is to rebuild the forks, build the bike table and get to some re-assembling. Still need to find an electric fan, and source a switch and relay for it ect. but should have some forward momentum now!

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

Thanks Rich, it should start looking like a motorsickle again soon.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

I don't quite understand the compulsion to eliminate the engine driven fan. THE Achilles heel of this machine is the charging system, and I would not be looking for ways of adding more electrical load. I can see the point of having an auxiliary fan for riding in traffic when the engine driven fan won't be moving much are and overheating could be a problem, but having an electric fan as your only fan seems ill advised to me.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

I see you point ADC but my GL has the electric fan with the same Charging system and is fine. I will be putting a low draw unit and have converted the running lights to LED. The electric fan is better as it pulls a lot more air at idle, will not destroy part of the rad etc if it fails like the stock ones do and only comes on when the bike reaches tempurature, not all the time like the cam driven fan. Which here in cold Canuckistan is good for getting the bike to operating temp on cold mornings and cold evenings. We only have about 2-3 weeks a year where it gets hotter than 80-90 deg. My GL doesn't even have the fan kick in right now on rides as it is cold enough that the bike only needs air flow from motion to keep cool. I struggle to get the old girl to warm up to full operating temp.

Cheers.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Leather UP!

The pickle with the original fans is the tendency to explode if not checked occasionally for cracks around the hub. The charging system can be helped if you get a mosfet regulator or swap out the G47 stator for a G8 and install an Ignitech unit to replace the old CDI

And if you are looking for an e-fan upgrade, why not just get parts off of a CX650, they ran an electric fan and the rad already has the temp switch built in

And I do agree with you ADC, the charging system is a very weak point

my 2cents

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Wheels and Frame painted!

MY 82 doesn't have the CDI. I will look into the Mosfet RR, and I may get the CX650 parts. going to check out the local wrecker who has a box of fans and rads so we'll see. If not, Ebay will get me something. I can likely swap him my old rad for one with a switch.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Wheels and Frame painted!

Maritime,
I just realized that you have an 82 CX500 so it already has a different charging and ignition system (ti and not CDI)

my bad

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Wheels and Frame painted!

Good info.

I happen to be working on a CX500 right now. Getting VERY intimate with it. I tore down the engine completely, sandblasted the cases, and powdercoated them.

Here are some pictures.

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Wheels and Frame painted!

I see a lot of guys getting Ducati fans and then glueing the temp sensor to the rad and I wonder why when the 650 has it already to go, just need to do a little wiring and it looks like it could have come from factory like that

Re: CX500 minor bob job - Wheels and Frame painted!

Just guessing, but it may not be that easy to find the 650 fans.
