cx'y 500

I had a bunch of parts turn up this week, so its time to get my butt back into gear and crack on.
IMG01324-20111022-0932.jpg

I want to focus on getting my clocks on. A couple of weeks back I made a mount from an old door kick plate and mounted my speedo to it.
The tacho has the same body and mounting holes so I just have to continue what I started to the other side.
IMG01325-20111022-0933.jpg

I removed it from the bike and applied a strip of tape to make marking a bit easier.
IMG01327-20111022-0939.jpg

After marking up the points for the holes I dot punched where I'm going to drill
IMG01329-20111022-0943.jpg

IMG01331-20111022-0946.jpg

Then removed the tape
IMG01332-20111022-0946.jpg

I want to give them a cafe look, so I put a small wire brush in to my drill press
IMG01335-20111022-1003.jpg

I went over the plate with one line then overlapped to where the center of the last circle finished
IMG01336-20111022-1005.jpg

And so on until its done.
IMG01337-20111022-1009.jpg

You cant see the most of it but I think its worth the effort for the bits you can see. I also did the underside of the plate too.
IMG01338-20111022-1023.jpg

Then connected them up, and ticked off another job.

Thanks mate.

Now then.

This is going to be interesting, I've never done a seat pad before and if it works out it has all sorts of plus's for other projects.
I brought this foam from ebay
IMG01342-20111022-1423.jpg

It has a peel off sticky back
IMG01343-20111022-1423.jpg

First I need to make a temlpate to work from and an old wheetabix box is just the job.
IMG01344-20111022-1424.jpg

I started with a center line and went off of that
IMG01345-20111022-1430.jpg

Then used it to cut round. To round the corners I drew round a rattle can cap.
IMG01346-20111022-1432.jpg

Now I have a basic shape to work with
IMG01347-20111022-1441.jpg

Now I can start trimming it with a craft knife blade
IMG01350-20111022-1449.jpg

Use a sharp blade and a sawing action and it cuts really well without draging
Then I used 120 grit paper to sand the edges and finished it off with 220 grit.
IMG01351-20111022-1449.jpg

I sanded all round and got a reasonably good finish
IMG01352-20111022-1504.jpg

Once sanded I peeled off the back and stuck tape over the rear corners so I can lift them to access the seat fixing screws.
Then I made a back stop for the pod the same way.
IMG01353-20111022-1519.jpg

I'm happy with the end result and consider it a win.
IMG01355-20111022-1521.jpg

NewImage.jpg

Not much more to do now, the list is getting smaller all the time.
IMG01357-20111022-1523.jpg

Thanks mate,

today I've been working on the electrics, and wiring in the front and rear lights.

as I said, at the weekend I did a bit more wiring hooking up my new headlight

IMG01364-20111107-2035.jpg

Clocks, although they are cable driven they have back lights

IMG01365-20111107-2036.jpg

And my new rear light setup. The indicators are going to be changed for somthing a bit suxier, but these are ok to check position for now.

IMG01366-20111107-2036.jpg

It was a bit of trial and error as I could get the lights or break lights to work, not both. I figured it out in the end and its all working fine now.

IMG01369-20111107-2037.jpg

My little front break res arrived too so next weekend I'm gonna be bleeding the front breaks.

Really feeling this technique man... So easy yet so sophisicated!

Its cheep and effective mate, I guess thats why it was so popular in the 60's

When you brush the alluminium like that, you don't have to worry about it oxidizing faster or anything? Or is that only a problem if you don't take care of the aluminium?

Its only a problem if you dont take care of youre BIKE mate. I would be so bumed if anything on any of my bikes oxidized :p

Got ya, that's what I figured.. I work on boats so I know the effects of the elements on aluminum and stain-less steel haha

Thanks Staffy. I've been watching your vids on youtube for a while now and luv your presentation. When you were doing your fiberglass and it "fuckin bit ya" I laughed my tits off. Now everytime I stick myself with a knife or something pointy I say the same thing, lmfaro ;D.

I also luv the way you problem solve, you are a cx legend matey bloke 8)

Thanks heaps IED. I've been having a lot of fun with it and the when the bodgineering works it's even better.

I have to say though, your attention to detail is second to none. I really look forward to seeing this one up on the homepage banner where it belongs mate.
