DO THE TON Mama Tried IV Oct 2013 - Barber Vintage Festival

I'll be there...this will be my first Barber Vintage Fest. I'm new to DTT, and new to riding (don't even have a cafe yet...rockin my little Honda Rebel ;)). Prolly won't bring my bike in that case (unless I get something else by then). Look forward to meeting some of the other Bama riders, as well as the DTT outta staters. Cheers.

Don't worry about riding the Rebel. No one is going to judge you. And if they do... fuck 'em :D
Being on two wheels is way more fun than four ;)

Hey BmaEngnr92, welcome! I'm a Bama myself, but I'm currently up in WV for work. Can't wait to be home in a few months!! What part of Bama?? I'd be glad to help you out in any way that I can.

Also, in my family, we have a saying...

"It doesn't matter what kind of ride you have, as long as it only has 2 wheels." :)

I'm also new to DTT. There's a group of about 6-10 of us coming up from mobile. haven't decided if we are bringing a trailer but will probably be riding and trailering bikes up there.

No judgement for the Rebel at all. That was my first bike and I love 'em.

Gonna need some name tags haha!

doesn't help, half these guys are named Mike

And the other half are named Rich.

There is a reason I have my name on my DTT shirt.

If anyone sees a tall, slim dude walking around in a badass vintage yellow Triumph t-shirt, they should just know its you. And if they see a hobbity-looking dude wearing said t-shirt, they'll know its Justin. And I will then start looking for your body.

So good folk, are people interested in having a bit of an official presence?

Like last year we'd need a handful of people to help out with things. Mostly some filtering of bikes to be let in to park based on clear criteria which will also be pre-communicated with Ace Corner ticket holders so no drama like last year (or at least less) and perhaps some pointing/direction of parking on the other side of the tunnel again like last year.

There's also talk of a Saturday morning ride which we would organise. Basically we choose a route with perhaps a restaurant in the mix. A few of us lead the ride and help block traffic at stops by having one or two stop at the intersection till the group is through and then bring up the rear and work towards the front for the next intersection. The route would only have a couple of these to deal with. Last year's excellent route has one or two stop signs to deal with.

We would want as many DTT members and bikes parked on display and hanging out in our area where we'd set up pop up tents etc just like last time.

Thoughts? I am looking into discounted passes for volunteers. Barber for example charges $35 to their volunteers for the weekend pass in exchange for minimum of 2 5 hour shifts over the weekend. I might be able to work out a similar deal or just subsidise it myself.

So let me know if you're interested in this sort of thing. Last year we had people help out for a 1/2 day so their entire day wasn't lost. I think we'd need 3-4 people 'working' at any given time so that's 8 people per day X 3 days for 24 total shifts. Switch over for the shifts would be around 1pm.

PM me if you're interested. I'll bring some 2 way radios maybe so we can be a little better connected this year.

We would 99% be inside the Ace Corner space so keep that in mind. Like I say I'll do my best to have the $25 up charge for the Ace Corner covered for volunteers but can't do that for 100 people :)

Just a few concerns from me for whatever it is worth.

Do we really want to be inside the Ace Corner as the official presence of DTT? I may be reading into it a little too much, but that means that people who are not affiliated with us are going to have to pay to be exposed to Do The Ton. It also means that in order to park and chill with your fellow DTTers then you're going to have to buy an ace corner pass to do out on a daily basis. I know that some members here do not want to buy the ace pass for the entire weekend, so that may create an issue.

I'll be honest with you. I am not a fan of a paid pass for ace corner at all. I buy them because I want to participate in the content, but my mind isn't committed to the custom vintage bike scene being a completely "for profit" concept. It has always been about the community and companionship to me, and to me it is against everything that George Barber stands for when he created the motorsports park. It doesn't make sense to me even from a profit standpoint to make a paid entry location simply because as a vendor you aren't able to sell your product to as large a number of people as you normally would. This of course is beside the point. The concern here is whether the official DTT presence should be accessed only by people who pay to participate exclusively. Again, I may be reading into this too much, but that seems a little off to me.

My second concern is the time of the ride. Last year it was a cluster, and it all depends on what time the ride is as to whether out not it will be successful our not. I'm not sure how many people are going to want to participate in a ride on Saturday morning (the busiest day of the festival) when the rest of the event is going on. Here's where my concern is. If the ride is organized to leave from ace corner, then you're going to have to sit through the pain in the ass Saturday morning traffic to get into the park and then organize, then ride out again. Gretta was running very hot by the time we finally got into the park last year because of the stop and go in 85° weather on an air cooled motor. But if you don't organize to leave from inside the park, how would you be sure to include everyone officially. We tried the morning ride last year and to me it wasn't the optimal time to have a group ride.

Just voicing some concerns about the issues I see at present. Worth talking about here.

If you are looking to mod yer rebel to cafe it, It can be done believe me. (Guessing by yer handle, yer in Al? if so mssg me,im im bham myself so mssg me if you want to get together)Otherwise who cares? drive your rebel rebels are fine,it will give us plenty of ideas on what to do to it to café style it!

By the way, why have you guys been bitching so much about the cost? $65 for the whole weekend ,primitive camping plus accessing ACES corner is a steal!! it does cost money to run this stuff you know? Now I do believe that some of the vendors were overcharging for products but, if you spend less than a couple HUNNYS on that weekend, I THINK YOU BE DOING REALLY GOOD.

Yeah man, I'm in H'ville. I haven't decided if I wanna do anything to the Rebel or not...depends on how quickly I decide to purchase something else. Although, I'm currently leaning toward keeping the Rebel for a bit and modding it. Not sure if I want to bob it or cafe it (if I bob it, don't really wanna go the black-out route...keep the chrome and maybe some red metal flake paint or something, some 6-8" z/t bars...that sorta thing), but if it could be turned into a decent cafe...I'd be down. Whatever I do, I wanna do it on the cheap...no sense in dropping significant coin in the Rebel. I have absolutely no fab/build skills, never worked on a motorcycle, and the only thing I've done on a car is oil/air filter/tire/other fluids changes, lol. I'm not even sure it's fair to call myself an engineer considering this. Anyhow, I'd definitely like to dive in and learn though.

Well, if you ever want to hang I'm in (north of Birmingham )Gardendale, And I'm trying to start a chapter for this area, Do you have a way to trailer your bike ,for Berbers that weekend? If you do you can park at my house and we can ride in together if you want? Because you want to have the option to have a way to bring stuff back if you go to the swap meet, But having a four wheeler at the festival kind of sucks! If there are any parts you're looking for start saving now because you'll find something at barbers it's basically two football fields worth of parts man! Freaking /mod custom heaven!!!
