Down under, an idiot and a 400F

Am I still alive? Yes.

Is working on 2 bikes on my bike allowance possible... obviously not :(

I'm itching to get this thing back up and moving forward but riding a dirt bike seems to require constant investment (tyres, new boots etc). Hoping the dirt expenditure will cease soon so I can get some more action happening.

I will second the notion of machining the hubs. I do this very commonly. Sometimes removing all the fins, other times just removing the fins parallel to the axle and leaving the radial fins. Leaving the radial fins keeps the stock look, and polishing keeps them looking vastly better than the stock cast finish for a very long time. It may not be practical to polish them again once laced up, but they are vastly easier to clean and keep looking pretty good for many years. If you paint them you can definitely clean them perfectly with a little time - wire wheels are pretty maintenance intensive for cleaning anyway. If you have nice rims and stainless spokes, you can clean them back to perfect for many, many years, so it is not that much to add if you make the hubs cleanable. Bare aluminum starts looking fairly crappy pretty fast unless you polish it. The polished surface takes vastly longer to oxidize sufficiently to really look bad, and even if you can't really polish it, being able to keep it clean absolutely helps.

helpful hint for keeping polished machined hubs shiny - tie a loop of leather shoelace (or cut a tassle off a handily parked softails seat.....) around the hub and as you ride it will polish the hub without actually removing any more metal as it spins round the hub (or to be more accurate the hub spins inside the leather.)
if you're none too fond of the look of it (possibly a bit 70s biker - which is where the idea comes from anyway) you can untie or cut it off before you go out for a ride with your mates, just use it to keep the hubs clean when you're on your own

I'm seriously considering unlacing the rims, chucking the hubs on the lathe and then sending them over to the vapour blasters to be blasted to a high shine.

Alright you dirt bike riding procrastinator  (sounds like I'm describing myself ;D) "Where the bloody hell are ya" with this build ?

The lure of the dirt had been too much, not only in time but the cash is the main pain. I've discovered riding a dirt bike is never ending expenditure and breaking parts ;)

With tyres, shims & springs (I've been getting really in to suspension tuning http://www.dirtbikeworld.net/forum/showthread.php?t=117710), I've had nothing left for the cafe project :(

My boots are still in need of replacing along with my gear too... The spend never ends.

Father's Day tomorrow and I'm hoping for a Carbon Airoh Aviator for the dirt too.

I promise people, the games not over, as soon as I have new boots/gear, she'll be back on track and moving along.

I think the Family got confused with your new boot request

No they got it right. I like a 4" PVC heel to ride in as it's easier to stand on the pegs and keeps the water out ;)

LOL, 400 isn't costing anything to sit until your ready to go again with it, all the real expense has been paid out

Very true. I would like it to be moving though if I could. I need an increase to my bike allowance.

Oh, LOL lots. that's too true and funny as hell ;D

Big development... I'm buying a whiteboard for the garage!

After watching another Distinguished Gentlemens Ride pass me by, I'm trying to get organised with the bike building and feel a list, right in my face will help drive things along.

I feel that I'm being held up with cash (which is absolutely true), but I've also gotten out of the habit of tinkering with stuff that costs me only time, so need to get back on that train.

Watch this space.

This sounds exactly like me...funds are tight but there is a ton of stuff i could do that only cost me my time..you may be onto something there with the whiteboard. Thanks for the idea !!

So I've been saving up to have a pro weld my headers. Same chap with the CNC and he's done a bunch already so hopefully mine should be an easy fix.

Will update soon.

Also thinking of storing the Yoshimuras I bought and going with some reverse cone mufflers from Megs instead as I think the Yoshi's are probably a bit too big... We will test for them of course ;)
