Thank You for such an awesome compliment Brother Hellcat450! I did not have a lot of time to work on the 550 today but I did start building one of the intake manifolds.
Brother Goggles Pizano I just hand sanded and hand polished them. The sanding is very important and I wet sand everything. When you are sanding a part to prepare it for polishing make sure to sand in one direction over the whole part unless it is round in which I would recommend that you sand around with the curve.
Start with as rough a grade of sandpaper as you need to smooth major imperfections and just keep dropping in grades of sandpaper until you get the parts surface glass smooth, when you drop down to 600 sandpaper and below it will start to look polished.
After you get it all sanded down polish it with your favorite aluminum polish. For hand polishing I really like either the Mothers Power Metal liquid or the White Diamonds liquid. The more time you put into sanding and the farther you drop in grades of sandpaper the better the final polished finish will be.

Thanks for the tips. I probably should have detailed my question a bit more....what technique do you use to get in between the fins? Just sandpaper folded up, sandpaper on a stick? For final polish, do you use a thin polishing wheel to get in between the fins or is all your work by hand?
I thought about polishing my fins as well but it looks next to impossible to get it as nice as you have done with all the texture on mine. Perhaps the fins on your engine were already smooth to some extent or did not have a texture? It's hard to tell from the pictures in the before shot from all the dirt and grime.
Brother Goggles Pizano I misunderstood your question, I thought you were asking about polishing in general. On my engine only the fins edges and the top fin are polished, I painted in between the rest of the fins.
If you decide to polish in between your fins use something flat like a wooden paint stirrer to wrap the sand paper around and you can wrap a polishing cloth around it to do the polishing as well.
Hahahaha! I have been working steadily so that I can add new photos I promise! I have been working out the intake manifolds and am almost done with one side so I will try to add new photos of one carburetor and intake on the engine tomorrow!
Thank You Brother Reinhard! I wanted to add new photos today but the intake manifolds are taking a little longer to do than I thought they would and I have not had a lot of extra time over the past couple of days as I had to modify the washing machine! Hahahaha!
Hahahaha! Brother Teazer that is funny man! Maybe I will put a Whirlpool tag on the bike! The washing machine and dryer both broke in the same week, what are the odds on that happening!
Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! INTAKE PHOTOS!
Thank You Brother Glenn!
Here are a few photos of the first intake manifold I built, it proved to be a true test in patience as the ports are facing away from each other. As I wanted a one piece intake I had to design it so that it was able to be installed into and removed from the ports while keeping the proper angles and providing clearance for the inside two bolts, it sounds easy enough however it was very time consuming to design and build.
I still need to do a little welding and smoothing to make the intake look real nice before I paint it burnt copper. The bowl is not on the carburetor in these photos.
Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! INTAKE PHOTOS!
hey I will be watching this. i have been thinking of making an intake manifold for my vf500, and running different carbs.
edit - so I do have a question. (the intake-length, tuning, etc. discussion starts here) Is there any concern in lean or rich fuel if you are not running equal intakes off one carb. I am thinking the mix is well -mixed. I do, of course, want my cylinders breathing fairly uniformly. I know it must not be super critical in that most pre injection cars/trucks have one carb feeding unequaly distant valves.
