Brother Hellcat450 and Jay_Kent Thank You for the compliments and for taking the time to follow this build and comment on it, you are the ones who are appreciated! It makes me very proud to know that other people like my work and ideas!
It will take me awhile to have her totally completed with paint and all of the polishing I want to do but I am trying to dedicate the time necessary to have her running within the next few weeks and will post a video so you can all see and hear her!
Brother Joksa I am doing some work to the rockers as well as the cam and many other parts but I am not going to post my entire internal engine design over the internet.
We made a final carburetor decision today! I have been having a really hard time deciding on what carburetors I wanted to run. My Dad has been telling me about these Nikki carburetors for awhile and I have really been wanting to look at a set, well he came by today bearing gifts! These carburetors are perfect and are everything I had hoped for and more!
We are going to run dual carburetors, one on each side of the engine with dual velocity stacks on each one! The carburetors are a single body with dual throats and butterflies, and a single choke and bowl.
The carburetors are similar to webers except they are a lot cleaner looking and a little smaller which makes them the perfect size for the 550!
Joe, What size are the chokes and where are the floats? Don't they have a float bowl bolted to teh side of the carb or am I thinking of a different model?

Brother Teazer the bowl is off in the photos but it goes on the bottom of the carb, if you look at the last photo where you can see the butterflies on the back of the carb you can see the float hangers at the very bottom.
When I build the intakes I will have one side of the carburetor going to one cylinder and the other side of the carb going to the other cylinder.
I am going to mic them to see exactly what size they are but the area of the throat where the butterflies are is the same size as the stock 550 intakes.
Before I started building the intake manifolds today I removed all of the exhaust studs, I was worried about snapping one or pulling the threads as they are over thirty years old but they all came out clean in true Honda fashion! I have been working on Honda engines for most of my life and am still impressed daily with the quality of their parts and design!
I also took a closer look at the carburetors throats today and I need to mic them to get the exact sizes but measuring them with a tape each throat at the butterfly is 26mm.
Hey Joe, if you don't need those studs man, I am really in need of two of them if you can spare them. If not it is no big deal, I can order some next time I make a bikebandit.com order, but I am not going to order just 2 exhaust studs.
I have those and I should have some more too Brother, measure how long yours are and I will send them to you unless you are going to be over this way one day and want to stop by for a visit!
Downdraft twin choke carbs are typically designed to open progressively into a plenum on a common manifold. One choke opens first so it's like having a small bore carb and as the throttle is opened, the second larger choke opens up so it's like a larger carb when you want more get up and go.
Think 28/36 DCD Webers.
That pair Joe is showing appear to open together like a pair of perfectly synched individual carbs.
Love those before/after pics.
That really is one of the sweetest engines I've ever seen.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; Great work! No, actually let me change that to AMAZINGWORK.
If it runs half as good as it looks it'll be killer for sure.
