Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

Another Awesome transformation taking place here ;D I'm very envious of this, one day I would love to have a 2 dinger in my stable 8)

DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

Digging that tail light.. Did something similar on my 650..

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

Looking good my friends! What is the plan for the good old license plate on this bike? They are ugly but required as we all know!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

We're still playing around with some ideas on the plate location. We might have to settle for a side mount but there are a couple of options we want to try out first. I'd rather not have anything interfere with the symmetry of the pipes....

Joe is doing an awesome job! As you know from your builds, there is a lot of "back and forth" that doesn't get posted. Joe is not opposed to "canning" something if it doesn't "fit" at the end of the day. This thing is really coming out nice IMO!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

I have an idea that you could use. It would make the plate look like it is suspended in mid air. You can buy a cheap goose-neck lamp for $10 at Walmart and use the goose-neck portion to mount the plate on. The goose-neck would obviously require that a bar with mounting holes be welded to the goose-neck to hold the plate. The other end of the goose-neck would require a washer welded to it so the whole assembly could be mounted to one of the shock mounting bolts.
If you want to discuss this give me a call and I can better explain it to you.

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

Thanks Habanero! The ideas that Joe and I want to try first will try to keep the plate "inside" the frame rails, probably where the stoneguards are now. That sounds like an interesting alternative if we go "side-mount" though.....

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

mounting it to the frame rails would be sweet i see some sport bikes with the recessed plate look but i always think to myself that it just cant be legal.

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

Are those pipes mounted correct the silencers are way more spread than I've seen befor. Especially the clutch side

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

Yeah, on the plate mounting, I have an understanding with the local cops. They pull me over a couple of times when something is illegal and then I change it.... lol

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Frenched LED Tail Light!

Thank You all for the compliments and support Brothers I know they mean a lot to me and Brother bluesmokey!

Trying to find a place to mount the tag where it will look nice is always hard for me however we are going to try a couple of different designs and see what we like the best. It would be cool if they would change tags from steel plates to patches so that we could just sew them on the back of our jackets! I would be happy to register all of my bikes on one cool patch that I could wear! Hahahaha!

Brother bradj the exhaust is just sitting on the bike in most of the photos on this build thread so that you all can get a basic idea of how the bike will look, a lot of the other parts are also on the bike the same way and all of the final adjustments will be made during final assembly after we paint, polish, and powder coat everything. I do not leave the exhaust pipes on the bike all of the time so that I can protect them from accidental damage and they are actually in a box right now, I set the exhaust on the bike when I need to check the clearance of parts we are building, working on, or adding like the kick stand, rear sets, chain, etc.

I am working on the design for the seat pan and the battery box now so I will add some new photos soon!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Mounting The Battery Under The Tail Section!

The new battery is here so I cut a thin steel plate and welded it to the rear of the frame so that we can build a battery tray and mount the battery under the tail section, I am still talking to Brother Bluesmokey to see if we are going to mount the battery in a tray on top of the plate or counter sink a tray in the plate however I thought you all would enjoy a few new photos!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Mounting The Battery Under The Tail Section!

The lines of the bike just look so damn right!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! Mounting The Battery Under The Tail Section!

This looks b e a utiful!!!! I love the idea of stitching a patch to your jacket with the license plate... although in my state they require the plate to be mounted the furthest to the rear of the bike as possible. Silly states, license plates are for tracking only, who needs that?

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! New Frame Work & Battery Box!

Thank You Brothers, I am very happy that you are enjoying this build!

I have been working on the frame some more this week, we decided to add another plate underneath of where the rider will sit on the tail section for extra support so I made the new plate and welded it flush with the top of the frame rails. I also built and welded in another small plate in front of the new rear fuel tank mounting bracket to add some strength to the frame rail that the top down tube is welded to and we may also be able to mount the new voltage regulator / rectifier on it if we have enough room. After I welded the new plates in I cut four pieces of half inch square tubing and built a battery box and welded it to the rear plate that we had already built for the battery platform. I am still working on a couple of different designs for a strap or bolt on bracket to hold the battery down however I thought you all may enjoy some new photos!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! We Are Starting The Engine Build New Photos!

We are starting the engine build now that we do not need it in the frame to test fit other parts! The new Wiseco pistons, rings, wrist pins, clips, top rod needle bearings, etc. are already here and the new crank shaft, bearings, and rods are on the way so I split the engine cases to remove the old crank shaft. When I opened the engine cases I inspected the transmission and it is in beautiful condition so we will be able to clean it and use it however we will be installing new transmission seals and clutch plates. We are going to leave the natural aluminum finish on the engine cases so I started cleaning them so that I can assemble the bottom end of the engine when the new crank shaft gets here. I am still working on cleaning parts of the engine cases however I thought you all would enjoy some new photos!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! We Are Starting The Engine Build New Photos!

Cant wait to see this bike finished. Awesome build ;)

I'd like to add a little input if I may. Mounting the plate to the mudguard (in front of the wheel) is indeed illegal. AFAIK, DOT requires the the plate be mouted at the rearmost part of the bike for visability. Now some places enforce it more than others, so you may or may not get hassled.
And, to build on Habanaros gooseneck idea. In an effort to keep the lines clean while "showing it off", why not make the plate Hideaway while parked? If there's enough width and depth under the seatpan/subframe, you could fab up something similar to a drawer slider mounted under the tail. Then you could stow the plate while parked, and slide it out while in motion.
I could photochop something up to illustrate it if you're intersted ;)

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! We Are Starting The Engine Build New Photos!

Thank You for the compliment Brother Redbird, it is always nice to hear that you are enjoying this build! I always love to hear other ideas and your design for the tag sounds cool! I am not sure if we will have enough room under the tail section as it may be close to the tire however I would love to see it!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! We Are Starting The Engine Build New Photos!

Im outta town with work tonight, but I'll be happy to work it up tomorrow evening when I'm home :D

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! We Are Starting The Engine Build New Photos!

Great idea REDBIRD!!!!!

Re: DWMS Racing RD350 Build! We Are Starting The Engine Build New Photos!

I like the telescoping plate mount idea.
When retracted the plate would be tucked up parallel with the under side of the tail.
Extended would drop the rear edge of the plate to a 35ish degree angle from it's stowed horizontal position.
What would be really trick would be to spring load the system so you would manually retract the plate/load the spring then cable actuate the release so you can operate it while seated on it.

Awesome work as usual, Joey!
