Electronic tach issues still with dyna S SOLVED

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

I have the same gauge with the pamco ignition and am having the same problem

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

Just waiting on parts. Hopefully they'll be here next week.

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

still havent figured out a fix yet to get the needle to not be so jumpy

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

Anyone figure this out yet? I have same gauge on my k3 750 and have the exact same issue.

not yet, will update this when i figure anything out

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

Just got off the phone with Pierre. I had a very good idea while looking through their adaptors; they make spedometer adaptors that run off the stock Speedo cable. So why not just screw one into the tach cable, throw some voltage at it and wire the output signal to the tnt gauge? He likes the idea and is heading into the test lab today to see if he can make it work. One issue is that the cam that drives the tach cable runs at half speed of the crank and he's not sure what the ratio of turns to pulses for the Speedo adaptor is. He's supposed to call me tomorrow and let me know if it's workable. I'm trying to get my hands on an oscilloscope so I can send him pics of the wave coming out of the dyna ignition in case that doesn't work. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

He called back, said he tested it with an electric drill and it worked perfectly. He's going to send me one today, should have it in a week. May need to change settings in the gauge to get it to display proper rpm but otherwise this is looking like a solution!

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

Got it today but the tank and side covers are being painted. Hooked everything up and used a funnel to fill the carbs. No more bouncing! Will wait to ride it before my final opinion is made and I want to check it against the factory tach at idle. 5K and red line but it looks like this is the solution we were looking for.

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

Yes. I solved the problem by taking the ignition system out of the equation. I just explained in detail what I did, not sure what you're asking.

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

I've re-read it a couple of times and I'm still a bit confused.

So you're not using an electronic tachometer anymore?

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

No I'm still using the electronic tnt tach. I'm not using the bike's ignition system to run the tach. I put this: http://kosonorthamerica.com/product/speed-signal-converter-c-white-jst-connecter/

On the end of the stock mechanical tach cable, ran ground and ignition power to it and then ran the signal wire from it to the tach wire on the gauge. Mechanical tach cable spins this little pulse generator and it sends a nice clean pulse to the tach.

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

Have you checked the ratios? Does the mechanical cable spin at the same RPMs as the engine?

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

I haven't checked it against the stock mechanical gauge yet but it sounds right. Idled at around 1k. Revs nice and smooth. Even if its a tad off its still better than what I had by an order of magnitude. Waiting on seat and tank to be done so I can ride it. Also found a clever solution for the electronic Speedo sensor magnets but it involves a lathe and if you're not as cool as me, you probably don't have one.

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

Glad I could help. I'll have to look at mine and see which wires are - + and signal. Will comment back later.

Got mine today, let me know what wires are what so I can hook it up, thanks

Re: Electronic tach issues still with dyna S

Alright so after trying the KOSO speed signal converter type C, like SkullCrusher had tried and testedo n his bike (that worked on his bike) it DID NOT work on mine. no clue why. i tried 2 of them and neither worked. my bike is a cb500 with a Dyna S ignition, so im not sure what differs from my bike to his that would make the converter work/not work.

basically the speed signal converter uses the stock tack cable and reads the signal that way, taking the entire ingniton system out of the picture, in theory thats great, but just didnt work on my bike.

After trying the second signal converter with no positive result, i plugged the tach signal wire back into the ignition wire to be sure it worked and i didnt fuck up the tach. it did, needle still jumpy.
Now over the corse of trying different things ive made a few different "filters" trying to solve the issue, as well as the Tech at Koso sent me a few to try..
Now all by themselves not one individually worked. HOWEVER, after plugging in the signal wire again to make sure the tach worked, i was in a "fuck it" mood and thought to myself, "why not just plug a whole bunch of these things in and see if it works?" and i found a combo that works 100%.

i have attached a diagram as to what it is ive come up with that makes the TNT tach needle steady as it was stock on the bike.

the only thing im not 100% sure about is what exactly is in the Koso filter that the tech from koso sent me. however if Sonreir could chime in and tell me what was in his filter he made me a while back, i tried that in place of the koso filter and it preformed the same.

This is the speed converter that worked for SkullCrusher, but not me. so it may work for others, may not.

i hope this helps some people with the Koso TNT tach.
