Finally chose a bike...

Re: Mechanics + art + quality x tradition= Where do I sign up?!

Welcome aboard man. There has already been a lot of good advice thrown your way (regardless of what bike you decide on). Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Re: Mechanics + art + quality x tradition= Where do I sign up?!

I just wish I had a way to pull all the shit off of a bike, virtually, and see the frame all by itself, to visualize the possibilities a little better. When I look at these nighthawks, I can't even see a resemblance to the cafe racers I've been watching, but again, bike mentor swears it can be done. Maybe if we try and it's hideous I can get him to just give me that norton I posted on my first page ;D

I got a cool item tonight. My dad got an old used leather biker jacket in the 1970's when he started riding. He rode a harley his whole life. He died when I was 12 years old (1997), and this jacket was taken by my twin brother. He never learned to ride, but he really liked the jacket, and wears it all the time. Well, my brother is currently fighting cancer for the second time this year (he's gonna make it, but the whole ordeal has made us start hanging out again, after a few years of being too busy for each other) and tonight we got to spend some quality time together. He gave me the jacket. He said "I just wear it for fashion; I don't need it the way you're going to need it, when you finally get yourself a bike. It's too big for me anyways..."

I'm unsure of the jacket's make or anything, though. I'll post a pic of the jacket soon. It weighs about 23lbs... I appreciate the sentimental value in the jacket, and I look forward to thinking of my late father and my twin brother every time I go out to ride...

Here's the jacket on me. Possibly a little wide at the shoulders. I care not.

Here is my brother and I.

And here is biker dad, with the family. I'm one of those two little doods. This bald guy just above here is the other of the two little doods.

"L"drop seat rail frames

Can anyone show me an illustration of what this refers to, exactly? What would the term be for the opposite, a proper cafe style frame?

I bought a bike.

1980 Suzuki GS750L. Got it for $1000. It has 16K miles on it, and it looks very clean (no rust or anything). Not the coolest looking bike, yet. The stock seat and bars are GOOFY.

I'm taking it to my friends shop today to try on a bunch of different seats and bars for the time being. I eventually will try to do more custom stuff, but I'm just so excited to start riding, this is me watching TV and eating dinner lately...

Here's the bike. Top image is as it stands now, bottom image is just about the eventual dream....

Congrats on the purchase! The GS is a bike, easy to work on and loads of parts are transferrable from other models. I have bookmarked his tread. Don't forget : www.thegsresources.com :D

Congrats on the purchase and welcome. I'll be looking for the start of the build thread. I was always a big CC Yamaha guy until I got my little GS for a song. I think you will be more than happy with your purchase when you are through.

Thanlks all. I'll go start a build thread (although it's all minor work to be done). I hope I put it in the right section. I'll come post a link here as soon as I get the other thread up.
