So the long weekend hits, I work Saturday but I figure with an oil change and valve clearance adjustment Mojo will be good to go
AND I have two people coming this weekend to see the XS650 that I'm selling...
So I start charging the XS650, load Mojo onto the lift, open the oil drain, remove the filter, start opening things up for the valve job...
Missing are:
My feeler gauges... damn if I can find them... no big deal... I can pick up a new set when I go to CT to get oil and some fresh 91 octane.
A new oil filter... I KNOW I HAVE ONE... where? Probably with the damn feelers have a party in some dark corner of my garage... now a 70's BMW MC Oil Filter is NOT something you can just run out and get on a long weekend. And the old one is so bad that I just can't bring myself to reusing it... I really slacked on the oil changes last season and this thing is done.
So I consign myself to NOT riding this weekend... arg.
Hmmm... so on to the XS... at least I can take in some $$$ right?
Finally get around to putting the front end back together after I graciously let my brother snag the alloy rims off her. Find the speedo sender that he sent back from Toronto, miraculously find the spacer for the axle in my extras bin, disassemble the caliper because I can't get on piston to seat for reassembly, figure out that zip tyeing the rotor to the wheel makes putting this all back together MUCH easier, get it all mounted, looks good...
Snap the axle retaining bolt off in the left fork leg... I was only using an 8" ratchet... thing must have been tweaked from the outset... the two reasonable options are to either try to use an extractor going up into the bottom of the fork leg or swap the entire front end with the '79 that I was including with the bike anyway...
Frak it... if the buyer can't wrench they shouldn't be buying a 74 Yamaha right ;D
So by now the battery is nice and full... I first try the electric starter... it's a little funked up but what the heck... no go.
So I kick start her, no problem... huh... why does she sound like... damn... running on one cylinder... great...
By this point my head is hurting from smacking it on a metaphysical brick wall all day... time to grab a beer, some pizza and just stop.
So today I'll track down the problem with the left cylinder, search for my oil filter (I'll find it because while yesterday was calm, 18c and blue skies... today is rainy & gray) and hope that at least one of the guys coming to look at the XS brings a pocket full of 100's and a sense of humour.
Almost enough to make me go to a dealer tomorrow and buy a new bike with a warranty and service plan...
Almost... but not quite... damn these old bike to hell but it seems I'm riding them in myself
