GL 1000 sport wing No Time, No Dime

thanks Flug

Hoosier I couldn't agree more about naked wings. Love em and true data about the pack -0- wings with teddy bearsand trailers hahaha. although Im guilty about the trailers. extremely handy. I built it to haul camping gear and bicycles. The old wing had a permanent hitch but I plan to make a quick release hitch for this one so it doesn't have to ride around with it always on the bike.
but you better believe Id have some fun showing off to some full dressers:)

Heh, heh. I won't hald it against you. ;)

So now you can start saving your dimes for one of these from Randakks...
Way outta my league but it is nice to dream.

Great build Troy! 8) I just tuned in tonight. Read through the whole 21 pages. :D

My brother Don (Seaglider) had 2 Nekid 'Wings before I got him "straightened out" and he got a Kawi zrx1200. ;) ;D I hafta admit, I'd love a Big Bomber for blasting a long ride! That would be epic!! 8)

Steady On!! :)

She is stunning Mr. Helmick, love everything you have done for her. Can't wait to see a vid of you riding her through some twisties.

Glad you like it sir. Can't say I blame your brother much deciding on the zrx. But then again I really like these big girls

Appreciate the kind words Junior. I have a feeling Tim will be sporting a camera when he arrives here in a couple weeks. and hopefully we'll be seeing some twisty roads ;)

Troy, have you had any coil issues? I was reading the Orange Crush GL1100 thread and Member CXman posted a Neon coil pack mod for the 1000/1100's of NGWClub. it looks like a great solution to weak coils and spark or working cracked coils that spazz out in wet conditions. I need to check mine as I hve the spazzing in heavy rain and I have been going over all the ignition circuit to see what it could be. May want to do a search on it if you find you need coils. One of the NGW guys did the whole mod for 35 bucks.

Thanks Mike. I've not had issues...yet...Sounds like a good upgrade. I wonder what ohm coil they are? I'll def check into it. Thanks

Been working out some kinks and I think I've got her close. I had a top radiator hose clamp fail (shoulda used a new one to begin with) and the speedo was stuck. On the first ride the cable snapped and I figured it was just old and grabbed the one off the 77. It broke too so I knew something was up. Cut the end of the cable that inserts into the speedo and sure enough it would not spin. saturated the gears in the speedo with Aero Kroil (Thanks Rich) and after about an hour I hooked the drill onto the cable and it broke free. I ordered a new cable but until it arrived I used one off the cb 400. The Tires were mounted at a local shop that just opened and they gouged the crap out of the rims. Said they struggled to get them to dismount. I expected them to be extremely stiff. Just wish they'd used a heat gun to soften them beforehand. Probably would never have had a problem.Anyhow, they never told me about the gouges which kinda pisses me off. I would have never expected compensation but the dishonesty drives me crazy. There is no way they gouged them as bad as they did without knowing. What's done is done and the new tires are mounted and make a huge difference.

The front end was driving me insane (super soft, diving and unresponsive) and being too impatient to wait on the 'fix', I gave Doug a call and he told me what to do. I removed the springs and found -0- preload which is an easy fix. I proceeded to cut off 4" of the tightest turns of the springs leaving about 1.5" of tight spring remaining. Then I cut 5" of CPVC pipe to take the place of the removed section of spring adding the extra inch for preload. Next I made a fork brace. I had the clamps for the 77 but the center brace is too short for the 78 forks. Simply cut and trimmed some aluminum flat to fit between, drilled it and bolted it down. Simple and works. Made a massive, massive difference. I added some fork boots. Came off a 4x4 I had laying around. Also did some trimming on the stock fender and painted it. Not paying attention one of the coats was done with wrinkle paint. So I need to remove it and do it again sometime soon.
Still need to adjust the valves and sync the carbs but other than that I think I'm ready to do some traveling.
Been riding almost everyday or atleast anytime I need to go somewhere and not haul something large haha.

Nice Troy, sucks about the wheels I had a B!tch of a time with my rear tire on the CX, same wheels as the GL's and I gouged mine in a few places, I ended up cutting the old tire to pieces and then snapping the bead to remove it. I was able to sand them out before paint and the new tires went on sooo easy. I would think a shop would have come clean and at least tried to clean them up as the lips are brushed aluminum! They have now lost a potential valued customer for being shady. Too bad for them, get some irons and tire lube and do your own, after a few times it is really easy to do. I mounted my CX tires in a few minutes with no rim damage at all.

Cheers and hope to have my big orange girl ride along with your little black dress sometime this summer.

Glad to hear about your progress Troy! The scoot's looking great.

If you need a vacuum gauge to sync the carbs, let me know. I have a Motion Pro unit.

A bit of progress or regression depending on your view. Recently went on a trip to Mississippi to watch my son graduate from college. It rained the entire time and I couldn't help notice the bikes on the interstate. Riders on bikes with fairings looked much more comfortable than ones without fairings. So time to add a cheap fairing real quick before the ride to the Thaw. Bought a headlight bucket with H4 from Big Rich. A quick spray job and got it mounted and mounted the cheap fairing.

I may make it easier to take on and off so it can added for longer trips or interstate riding. Anyhow, rode the bike 900 miles to and from Kentucky for the thaw. Had a slight lean miss on the way down. Once there found an intake clamp slightly loose. Other than that the bike performed pretty well. I need to add more beads to the front tire. It is slightly out of balance. I'm wondering if the shop added any at all ??? . I also noticed the bike wanted to walk out of turns, really bad at high speed cornering (above 80 mph). Once home I realized the bushings I added to the rear shocks allowed the acorn nuts to over tighten and clamped the shocks down. Easy fix but I've not ridden yet to see. Low speed cornering the bike handled fairly well. She really wants to lay down, and will hammer thru and out of corners like now ones business. I love the throttle response if she's rolling above 30-40 mph.

so started the next phase. Initially I was going to keep the one up glass wing seat and switch out to a two up when needed. Decided to use only a two up. The one up is actually very comfortable. I had my dad sit on it and the factory seat and he was surprised he liked the bat wing seat better. Anyhow, the new seat hopefully will have the same type of foam as the bat wing, and will have a removable tail section that covers the back of the seat.

Welded a hoop

Decided it was too long and cut out two inches. Still two long so pie cut and added a kick up:

Made an inner fender:

Since part of it will be seen it will have door edging

Started on a seat pan

The plan is to make seat mold that can be used a few times over. The wing frame is jacked because the gas tank sticks up thru the seatrails by 3" and is off set to one side. Makes for a real challenge.

enter one of my most favorite people on the earth, my dad:

Ripped down some 3" conduit to make the radius on the sides

Cut ribs for support

Slight Coffin shape to fit around the gas tank

The ribs get glued and nailed. The sides will be hot glued

Almost ready for fiberglass:

I should note that once in fiberglass the sides will get trimmed to fit the seat rails. The back sides will tapper to -0- and the back of the seat will be rounded to fit inside the frame hoop

Turn your back for 2 seconds and the bike makes another complete turn...... coming along nice Troy!

Glad that headlight worked out so well for you, too.

Hahaha well you know me Rich :D Thank bud and huge thanks for the headlight and use of the sync gauges! Very much appreciated.

I must be doing something right if it gets a pass from Iron man haha. Glad you like it Junior

Nice work Troy. Glad you mentioned the rear shock issue. I am mounting new shocks on the cx and dont want the same issue.

Bike is coming into its own now Pal, eager to see how your seat turns out!
Just for the record, if my Viper fairing winds up on my GL, I have been contemplating it for a looooong time. ;)
Seeing your Dad pitch in made me smile, Mine was an awesome guy and a genius at fabrication as well... would have been fun to build more stuff with him.
