I've never had a spring-clamped pipe like this on a car or a bike - how do you keep the two pipes from corroding together?

So this ones going back under the bench after all. It's really not hard to open up but at this point I don't have the time nor money. Later when I have both I'll rebuild the whole motor. Time to get the 77 out of its frame

Sheesh - took me a few seconds to recognize the advance mechanism. I presume that's the end of a cam it snapped off of?

Yep, I would say so. That blows. I may have a cam....I'll ask tomorrow.

JEEZUS! This all happened so fast Glad I found it at the beginning, if you can call page 5 the "Beginning"! ;D
That Hotwings Glass seat looks so good on the early GL's. Gotta love these full figured Gals! Gonna keep an eye on this one.
Just remembered, I am 99% sure I have a GL1100 cam, I know it fits, as the early 1000 cams were a hotter grind and it is a common swap in an 1100. I believe the later 1000's like yours had the same profiles as mine but I am not positive. Do some checking and let me know if you need it.

Wow Troy been followign on FB as you know, that was the only reason I was checking. Glad you are putting it here now. That totally sucks on the cam, I know how you feel, the day I broke my stator bolt inside my shaft :-( at least you have a backup engine to get you riding. This bike is really shaping up. Nice to know I won't be the only one on a full figured girl at the GTG's. As for the screen, good idea to get something, Your ergos look almost exactly like mine. I find any rides up to about an hour are fine, after that the screen, which is not that big, just helps take enough wind off while riding to be able to pull 8-10 hours with less fatigue, I do however have wrist pain by then end of a trip that long, but the bars lowered makes so much improvement in handling I will take some asprins and deal with it.

Cheers, Looking forward to the end result. Glad you got the seat to cause I would not have had the resourses to mod the frame and it would not have looked that good on my girl.

Hey Tim glad you stopped by.
You got it exactly. The advancer was froze on the cam. I sprayed it for 3 days with pb blaster. Nothing to get a hold of to pull it. Tapped it gently with a hammer and that happened.

I wondered if you and Maritime would stop by. Figured you might when you saw something about a GL haha. Glad the two of you are here.

So anyhow, I greatly appreciate the offer. At this point I can't even think about parts unless for some reason I have to come back to this engine before the snow flies next fall. I hope to not even start collecting parts for it until then. Again I really appreciate the offer. I may check with you mid summer to see if you still have it.

I need to check your screen out. Do you have pics somewhere? I've had my eye on a couple but I'm just not sure yet. I really don't want much. Just something i can tuck behind.

So I started of the day pretty good. This showed up: New Starter (the missing parts from the other two are on the starter that's on the 78. It worked but struggles. Hence the brand new starter)

A mouse made its home in the 77's breather. Luckily the breather sealed him out of the carbs

Started pulling the motor from the 77

For me removing this c clip and maneuvering the outputshaft away from the driveshaft was the toughest part. Everything else went pretty smooth

Since the 77 had the alternator wires soldered directly into its harness with no connector Had to solder the 78's connectors since I'm using the 78s harness.

After soldering the connectors to the alternator, installing a new temperature fan switch, and doing some cleaning, positioned the 77 for the install

Took a couple hours to get everything lined up. Having someone pump the jack while I lined up the output shaft to the driveshaft and the motor mounts for their bolts, would have made it so much easier. So anyhow, the frame is back together, and a bunch of other pieces.

But wait just a minute. What's this? Left off the driveshaft boot. It's all gotta come back out :'( :'( :'(

Quit for this evening and I'll get back on it hopefully when its a bit warmer out there (22f tonight). In the mean time I'll be opening up the carbs. And a positive note, the nasty rusty tank (78) looks brand new inside. I
Plan to neutralize it tomorrow and coat with 2 cycle oil

If anyone has any suggestions for an 8" fairing I'd greatly appreciate it

Troy, I have a Windjammer "Ghost" windscreen with all the mounting hardware if you want it. It has been sitting around forever in my garage..... I can snap a pic of it tomorrow if you'd like - it's not the fairing that pops up via Google searches.

Here is one of a fellow members over on NGWClub.com "ThunderChild". He's got a HotWings seat like yours and a Emgo Viper fairing like the one I picked up for "Rock-It", It's available at Dime City for a fair price...
