Ok, I'm gonna use the spoked wheels off the parts bike.
No love for the Comstars eh? ;)
In all honesty I think the first design Commies are some of the best looking wheels out there for factory mags. I always seem to pick up the later generation bikes that came with the "Reversed Comstar". On another note, the original Commies did have a recall in the first year for the rivets where the spokes attach to the rim coming loose. (EEK!)

... And to think I was trying to sell this at the auction before I left because I was feeling guilty about spending $400...

Oh you Bastard!

How the heck are ya? Been too long. Yeah this is one of the gazillion projects I've got going on, lol. I'm sure you're the same. Anyho is that the tank off the KZ and did you paint it? I love it
Think it's about time for a runt dinner :D
Doing well. Thought you'd recognize that killer paint job on the KZ tank! ;D Went for a ride on her last weekend, btw.

Wow Troy, you are really moving on this one. I like the spokes better too. Even though I have the comstars. I forgot to take a pic of my screen, I got stuck in on bathroom reno and had issues with my tourch and... ahem caught the drywall paper on fire. Not a big deal but now I have to prime and seal that part again. Oh well. I'll see if I can get you pics tonight. If I remember correctly I got the screen used for 40. off ebay, hit it with some polish and shined it up, it came with 1" mounts but a little clear rubber hose cut to fit mounted it jut fine. Can't wait to rip along with you on the old girls.

Cheers,

Maritime

There's a complete 77 GL1000 'parts bike' advertised in my local penny saver type rag. I wish I had the money and space to go pick it up.

Ok. Here is my screen. National cycle. 15 high by 17 wide at the base. I also mounted the klr hand guards for spring. This screen has knobs to remove in seconds and I can ride hundreds of miles as our dtt friends can attest. Pics

hahaha who said anything about not using the Comstars? I was just repeating what Brad ask me to say. He said, "Please tell me...". hahaha.
I actually like them. They look brand new and are lighter than the spokes (at least I think their are lighter). Why would I use something heavier? hahaha. Sorry Brad.

Yep, paint job gave ya away, haha. Man I'm so glad you've got her on the road. How's it doing?

Oops sorry guys I mispoke when I said I paid 400. It was actually $450 and I was feeling very guilty. Afraid I'd be sleeping in the dog house (reason I'm build the cabin )haha

Troy, fwiw: I have a spare set of wheels with tires for the GR in case I ever have an "issue". Same goes for the little GS - spare wheels will be hanging in the garage ready to go just in case.

Last season I snapped a couple spokes on the GR and just swapped on the spare wheels. Didn't miss a day of riding season because of it!

Yeah Rich I love having a parts bike. Comes in very handy. I'll have a spare set of wheels too. I probably would have considered the spokes but they are super nasty compared to the comstars. They will be a good back up to keep me going though

Hey Maritime I love the KLR hand guards. I may have to steal that idea for cold riding. The windshild looks like a real life saver. Really nice for longer rides. I have one coming that junior had laying around. I'll need to source a smaller bucket though because its for a 7"

Picked up some goodies today and got some garage time this afternoon.

Switching to Castrol from Rotella T Diesel. After seeing what Rotella in my tractor did I wont be using it any more. Anyhow, the 2 cycle oil is to coat the gas, the magnets are to hold the clubmans while I weld some extensions on the ends. As you know I used the ape hangers to make the bars and what was left after cutting off the curve does'nt leave enough for the brake master cyl. They are about an 2" short.

Swapped the 77's timing cover for the 78's. ITs in much better shape even though I'd perfer black powder (plan to have them powdered in the future)

Changed the thermostat and cut the rad hoses.

Took me for what seemed absolutly forever to get the radiator back on. The hoses are a bitch.

Things are moving along pretty well. Tomorrow the gas tank should go back in then a lot of stuff can get put back together. Hope to have the carbs done by the weekend and have her running soon after. Rain is in the forcast so that will dictate paint. IF nothing else I'll ride without paint. easy to pop off what needs paint and do it at another time

Heard from my suspension expert today (DEK's own Beatnic) and he is picking up my shocks this weekend. Also its a go for the major front end upgrade. Will make a massive difference in how the bike handles. I'm so stoked!

Get it man!!! What's getting painted? I'm super jealous. Stuck at work today and itching to be in the garage.

Not much at all. The frame just behind the shock mounts where I capped it off and the Seat. That's it. I may just put a base coat on the seat for now and clear it later. Speaking of which I need to order some 2k clear

You know you've got to paint that seat to match that beautiful tank....pinstripes and all man!
