GL 1000 sport wing No Time, No Dime

LOL... those gas tanks are kinda "fun" aren't they. :-\
Man your not kidding. I feel bad about all the scratches I put on that tank. Thank heaven I didn't just pay to have it powder coated or something. I think I might have cried lol.

Things are rolling along pretty well. I finished up all the wiring (with the exception of the tail light and the new turn signals up front). The Dyna ignition is installed and should be close to being in time. The only things remaining to get her running are check the coils and go thru the carbs and get them installed (fingers crossed). Once running I plan to sync the carbs and adjust the valves. Later this summer plan is to change the valve stem seals. But that's going to be about it for this summer.

Anyhow, Still need to prep the handle bars and exhaust then paint. Also still need to build the baffles. The back of the frame is prepped and ready for paint and I'm tossing around the idea to paint the tins while I'm at it. The left panel of the gas tank has several imperfections and the pin stripes are chipping away. No use to only do one side. It would never match. Anyhow I'm just not sure if I'm going to do it yet.

I placed an order for the clear coat yesterday and it should be here at the first if the week. Going to try Eastwood's version of Spray max 2k clear. Its about $10 cheaper than the 2k and I trust Eastwood's proven quality. I'm also working with Logan on some lettering for the seat. Plan is to have the base coat done and curing before the clear arrives so I have my work cut out for me.

The weather has made a change for the better so painting should be possible about anytime as long as the moisture holds off. Still need to hammer out a couple huge dents in the front fender where the auction people put there love. Not sure what that's going to look like so I may be hunting for another front fender. Anyhow, that should be about it for the immediate.

MY goal at present is to have the bike ready to ride to Pittsburgh next weekend for new tires and suspension upgrades. The suspension is going to be the best thing about this old girl. Doug from DEK (Beatnic) has some cool things in store for the suspension so I'm super stoked about that. Anyhow, I rolled her outside today in hopes to paint the frame. Plan was to remove the seat, back tire, shocks and mask everything off. Instead, rolled the bike outside, shot a couple pics (she needs cleaned up from garage dust) then went sailing with my son. When I got back I did mount the seat (after this pic) but didn't get much else done. Paint will have to wait for another day. If all else goes well on the farm, back at it tomorrow.

sweet. hell you coulda went black on rear, and run the same stock gold pinstripes along edge to match. Thing woulda looked like an original Honda concept escapee for 1979.

Not sure I completely follow, but the plan is to match the tail with the tins. Hopefully I can get started on paint this week. It's funny that you mention the concept bike. My plan has been to build it to look like it could have been a factory bike. Good suspension and handling, a seat you can move around on etc. At a glance it should look like a fun bike that handles and performs well, and travels without much pain. Nothing more, nothing less, Sort of utilitarian.
Edit:
Meant to add the link for the Eastwood Clear:

Looking forward to seeing how the eastwood performs - I saw that a couple days ago and hadn't gotten to looking for reviews.

Look'n good Troy!
Say brother I appreciate it. How's life been treating ya? I was thinking of you when I was cutting up my apes and making my own. I think you are about the only other one on dtt that I can remember (I'm sure that are probably others but I just don't get out much) making your own bars out of old apes. Good stuff man.

Made some progress today
painted the back of the frame (VHT Epoxy):

Mounted the seat. Did this yesterday actually(two bolts simply attach to the bracket I welded on the frame. Can be seen in above pic. Its the seat bracket that I moved from the front to the rear. Its not needed on the front with this seat so it only made sense to use it in the back) real simple:

Removed headlight ears and will use the ones I made for the 77. These sweet little turns from Dime City will get mounted on the ears

Prepped the header pipes and the mufflers. Put a massive amount of time in these but they really don't show it:

Continued...
Still a good amount of texture from the rust so I think after this off gasses I may hit the mufflers with VHT 350* high texture paint

I decided to hold off on making the baffles until I saw how the mufflers were going to turn out. Theyre not horrible so I'll probably start building the baffles next garage time

On a very positive note I put my new NGK spark plug caps on the wires (someone took them off the bike at some point while in storage before I got it, so I ordered new ones) and got spark on every cyl. I'm pretty stoked about how the new starter turns this bad girl over like a banshee and even more stoked that the coils seem to be ok!

Plug caps came from a very cool seller. Stirring trouble or having a little fun take your pick, I asked them to draw a dog jumping thru a hoop of fire on the outside. They taped on a photo. I will def buy from them again

Remaining are the carbs (still need to open them up), install the exhaust (will pick up the header copper crush gaskets tomorrow) and make the baffles, prep and paint the seat (decided to leave the factory paint on the tins for now. I plan to paint the tins from the 77 at my leisure and use those), Paint the homemade handle bars, install front turns signals, new tires maybe this weekend, and install the front brake master cyl. when it arrives. I believe that's about it. Ever so close...

Good work Troy, she's really shaping up. Let me know what Doug's magic does to your handling, I may get him to do something similar to my girl when next I am around his shop. May give me an excuse to make a ride out of it too.

We had a guy holding some cb 900 resivor shocks until he got back from racing at Daytona. When he returned the price increased so I passed. So at some point I will need to upgrade the rear. For the front Doug has something pretty cool planned. He is milling some bushings so I can run 'special' cartridge emulators. Should make a world of difference. I hated how the 77 handled but I have a feeling I'm really going to enjoy this.

Started making the baffles for my homemade exhaust. Drilled lots of holes

This is a cool trick I learned from Jason Hayes a friend of mine and and incredible fabricator. I've used it to close the end of tubing on frames. Welded a bolt onto a washer then welded the washer onto the exhaust pipe.

Cut the bolt off and cleaned everything up. Normally I'd pick a bolt that fit tighter to the washer but since this is hidden in the exaust figured it wouldn't much matter

Started prepping the extra tank panels. Blocked the outside

Sanded the inside. Finger marks are ok on the inside

Good to see you have high quality beer to keep you company! :)

Troy, I forgot to tell you earlier - I'm going to try to ride the Gs down on Monday. Can help with whatever you need for an hour or two before riding out.

Everything is looking great man! I'm excited to see this in person.
