Ground Resistance

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

Slowly taking shape. I had to abandon the 2d and start shaping in 'the real'.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

that looks great man. I wanted to tell you how much I love the direction. That little fairing is the shit (in a champagne glass!!) Very cool and I can't wait to watch the master stroke his brush. Keep at it my friend. Really nice work.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

Thanks Troy, that means a lot to me. I didn't plan on a hiring a master though, I was going to do it all myself.

;D

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

The windshield of this bike made my think of your project, I think there might be some merit here

That is all...

On a brighter note, a good basic intro to LED's for yall. http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/led.htm

What are you using, mig or tig. I'll be doing the same thing shortly with a mig welder. First time as well on thin material.
Cool post on the LEDs
Don't know if posted this before but I've bought from these people a couple of times http://stores.shop.ebay.ca/Empat-Manufacturing__W0QQ_armrsZ1. They ship fast, their prices are great, and its US made. I also think they do custom as well. Took about a week to get to Ontario after I placed my order.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

It is a 90 amp MIG, flux core wire, that doesn't use shielding gas, and only has 2 temp settings...
Worked great for the frame, shit on the sheet!

I ordered 100 ct, 4000 mcd reds with 100ct, 540 0hm resistors from a link JRK sent me. 5.38 USD for the deal free shipping. Should be here in another day or two. Must have been on sale because the price jumped to 30 bones yesterday. They are only 25* viewing angle, but I'm gonna use a lens and get a handful of 10000 mcd for the brake.

Here's the <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/100-pcs-5mm-Red-LED-Ultra-Bright-Free-Resistor_W0QQitemZ190358762484QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2c524433f4">link.</a>

According to the calculator link you gave me, if I use 6 inline I don't need a resistor. Is that adviseable? Here is the specs provided by the seller.

Size (mm) 5mm
Lens Color Water Clear
Peak Wave Length (nm) 630
Forward Voltage (V) 2.1
View Angle 25°
Luminous Intensity (mcd) 4000
Maximum Current 20mA Continuous, 50mA peak for 10% Pulse Width

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

this is sooooo cool.

I'm taking a welding class soon.

you're project is very inspiring.

with 6 inline you'll be needing at least 12.6 volts to run them full brightness, so as long you don't have a spike in voltage you should be alright.
My mig is a power mig200 a fairly big beast 220volt but I've got multiple options so it might go alright. Here's a link that might help with the sheet
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/removing-floor.htm
Lots of info on that site.

Looking forward to what you've got coming with the lighting

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

Thanks Greasy, but try not to laugh at me when your instructor teaches you how to weld properly.

Jay, sounds like your machine should handle the job in ace fashion. I can get what I want done wit this one, just takes a shitload of patience.

On the LED's I think running the 750 churns out 13 and some change. Sounds like I need the resistors and smaller chains. I can't wait to get to wiring and lighting. I find it strange that I'm as excited about math and schematics as I am about welding and metal shaping. I love this stuff.

I'm torn on the final look of the headlight too. I'm finding inspiration in WWII fighter planes and tanks, but having trouble getting the two aesthetic opposites to align. Hopefully I 'll get it worked out by Wednesday when I can weld again. 'Till then Gents, Cheers.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

Did some more sheet work. Started by cutting off what I did last time.
DSCF0011.jpg

Top center came first. Originally I planed on curving it to match the ring, but I have this tank obsession right now. I think I'm gonna work in some WWII heavy equipment and radio comm elements.
DSCF0012-1.jpg

That went ok So I tried a side with the compound curves. It was cake at first and the bead was lying quick and even. No burn through. I was in the zone.
DSCF0020-1.jpg

After that photo all hell broke loose. Every time I touched wire to plate,... hole. As I'm trying to repair a hole, another hole. Repeat the last sentence as needed. I'm loosing my mind here. I turn the power to the lower setting, but it burns right through. I chased holes all afternoon. The plate is solid now, but I have imperfections all over from heat and what not. I never progressed past the second plate. I didn't want to touch this thing with the bondo, but that isn't looking good now.

As far as the design, the acrylic wind shield is gonna loose about half it's height to resemble an old military jeep. There will also be a few elements from allied steel. Nothing cheesy, but most of that is still in the research stage.

Any advice on the welding sheet is appreciated. The link on the previous page helped this morning, but by the afternoon, nothing would work.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

I really like what you're doing with you bike. Great inspiration! As far as the welding goes are you using mig outside? If so make sure the wind isn't blowing your sheilding gas and just do tacks don't try to run a bead just stitch it together....that's the only way I've ever been able to weld thin sheet with mig.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

No shielding gas, Crappy flux core welder. I just think more practicing is in order, or thicker sheet. ;)

I hit you tube and got some nice ideas. One guy suggested flattening a piece of copper pipe and clamping it to the back to act as a heat sink. Worth a try at least.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

What thickness of wire are you using? I've had blow through at .035" and 24 gauge, try going down to .025" wire but it will mean that you will need to buy new drive wheels though.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

.035" wire, but I'm not sure what gauge sheet (prob 24). I picked up a sheet of 14 at Home depot for the seat and it welds much nicer. Maybe I'll split the difference today and grab some 16 - 20. The amount of welding I can avoid from burn through or grind off will more than compensate for the weight difference.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

Quick edit. My internal thickness gauge (eyeball guess) needs some calibration (is dead wrong). What I was calling 14 from the Depot is actually 22, what I'm using now is probably around 28 or thinner. Needless to say I'm cutting off the side piece and finishing out in 22g.

Threw some CLR in the tank just to see how it works. Some light to med rust to contend with. I also picked up some random clamps and hammers to help expedite the process on the headlight. I accepted the refund offered by the LED scammer on ebay, and I'm currently sourcing LED's again (hopefully from a US/N. America seller).

More Tomorrow...

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

Eureka moment. I noticed the welder was struggling slightly to feed the wire this morning. Although I had been keeping the outside clean, the tip had at some point become partially jammed. Cleaned it out and the welds started flowing clean and easy again. Pics this evening gents.

Re: CB750-F3 'Filthy Beast'

The Beast is gonna be back burner for a while. I totaled my car today. Had the boys and wife with me, and thankfully we are all doing well. Minor bumps, and bruises but in tact.

I turned to stop the kids from fighting and missed a light turning red. The other driver was uninjured and his car received much less damage. Could have been worse all around, but I feel just about worthless.
