GS450 1979,81,82 cafe project.

Just placed an order from DCC for a battery and some other goodies.
Spent some tine block sanding the tank last night filling in dents and getting it ready for paint. The electrical system isnt going to be as hard as I originally though.

any ideas on placement for ignition?

What if you place it on the right side in front of the tank on the bottom tube going to the neck? Hides it a bit and should not interfere with turning stop to stop.

Some more parts arrived from DCC, Iam excited to try out this anti-gravity battery!
The headlight looks great, and the front brakes are coming together.

-Looking for a decent pair of 37mm clip-ons for the gsx750 fork tubes, anyone have any links other than ebay and DCC?

Battery tray finished up.
I plan on using a ANTIGRAVITY 4 cell battery from DCC, I need to make sure my electrical system is working correctly before I do that. I have been looking into building a Battery protection circuit to cut the current from the stater above 14.v volts. Have any of you guys messed with voltage regulators or zener diode circuits for battery protection over your stock R/R?

I got stock GS500 parts - stator and R/R. Bolted right up and wired right in.

About 30 years.....

Seriously though - I got both for around $40 and they installed in the original spots no problem.

Worked a little bit last night mocking up the bike. Looking to run wires through the frame and design a carb mount!

THANKS GUYS.

Worked on the exhaust this weekend. Removed about 8" from main pipe and welded the megaphone up under frame and gave it a more aggressive look. I am very happy with how it turned out, I will be heat wrapping it again.

My buddy from college's dad started a powder coating company. I was able to get a good deal and bring some parts over to him to sandblast and powder coat.

Wiring is close to being completed.

I am having problems cleaning up the lower fork tubes, the clear coat is all discolored on the lowers. Any of you take care of this problem with out removing the clear coat and re-surfacing the AL?
Thanks.

Re: GS450 1979,81,82 cafe project, breathin with VM's.

A coworker builds high performance classic snowmobiles, circle track ice sleds, and I got to talking to him about old mikuni carbs. Turns out he knew a guy who has tons of them. Any how I got my hands a pair of VM 32's for cheap. Once the motor is back in the bike I can begin to tune them to them. I have done some research on jetting and have an idea where to start. As for fitment, they fit right up but I may add a spacer and a hanger from the frame to support them.

Re: GS450 1979,81,82 Cafe Racer, Poweder Coat complete

Made the game time decision to powder coat alot of parts on the bake a few weeks ago. For durability and longevity it was the best choice. I got a really good deal from a buddies dad's one man powder coating company. I have started wiring the frame " hiding wires in the frame rails" and mounting r/r, ignitor etc. I have to replace the lower stem bearing on the triple tress but other than that I have all the parts ready to be assembled.

Pics of powder coat below.

It has been a long time since Ive' posted here but a little update. Bike was finished" to this point" about 2 months ago. I had a great time figuring out the R/R problem with a reduced electrical system load. But after two old stock regulators i jumped on a Polaris SCH775 and its working great now. Working through a few carb bugs still but its on the road and looking great.

Forks, wheels and engine will be redone this winter.

some pics.
