Thanks guys, I'll stick with the recommended 1/4 to 1/2 turn out. So where the lever grabs is controlled by the adjuster on the sprocket case then? if so how would I moce the catch/release point in toward the grip? turn the knob in/down until it is where I want it? If so would I need to adjust the rest of the lever free play at the lever?
I am sure I am making this harder than it needs to be, just frustrated I can't seem to get it right.
Some issues with the internal sprocket carrier spacer have helped to sideline this weekends riding activity(long frustrating story, Thanks to big Rich for all the ideas and help). However since I had to pull things apart anyway I figured i would make the best of it with some general maintaince work and some upgrades. All parts should be here by next WED -THURS.
Also decided to move the clipons down under the tree. It wasn't twitchy at speed, however bu moving the forks in the tree and mountng the clip ons below I get make rake/trail closer to back in line for in town rides. Between the 3/4 inch longer shocks, additional 2+inch height by loosing the 16" wheel, and dropping the fork legs through the bike tended to want to not turn well at mid speed.
No pictures but I will post some up when my parts come in and I get the gauge and rear buttoned up.

So things have been going well. bike is ridable and doing pretty good. I still seem to have a slight stumble when starting from a stop. If I blip the throttle up and go to release the clutch it tends to big worse. Does anyone know if this is a pilot jet issue? If so I can bump up on the pilots from the 40 to 45. Needle is shimmed and the main is at 127.5. I have some new free flowing mufflers coming this week so I was thinking I need to go up on the mains anyway. I have 135 as the next step up for the mains so hopefully that works or I will be sitting and waiting on parts again.
Also just as a nice progress piece I got my mudguard template fabbed up with some clear lexon I had from work. I am not sure if it is thick enough and may need to be replaced with a thicker aluminum piece instead. Any opinions, pictures or advice from those who have fabbed up this type of mudguard are appreciated.
Good question Rich. Does it sound like it is running the float bowls low? when it is fully warmed up it seems to hesitate much less. If I roll on very smoothly I et hardly a chug at all when it is warmed up. When it is on choke or not fully warmed up either roll on has the same result.
His build thread yes, if he has a seperate post just on carbs no. Someday I will have a nice EFI bike as a secondary just for such an odd mechanical delay. Have I mentioned lately how much I hate carbs? Some day it will all make sense I hope.
On the carb note: How is your 500 carb trial working? Did you end up using the factory boots? Do you still have access to the set we discussed? Still very interested in getting away from the CV's someday in the near future.
Ton of pretty useful information. I drilled out the slide and shortened my slide spring based on this thread and it turned out well, definitely a noticeable improvement.
I'm liking the mud guard idea you've got going on, I've been contemplating something similar but it's just ideas floating around still.
I know right now it is runnable and not running lean. I figure I'll make the next attack at the carbs when the shorty mufflers come in. Big RIch had been doing the gs500 carb mod, so if it gets the thumbs up I may try that later in the summer to ditch the CV's al together.
The mudguard seems to be ok so far. I can't decide if I want to pick up some thicker lexon, wait for a stress crack, or move to aluminum. It was kind of a template more than anything. I like the look but i am not sure of the durability. I figured if i was going to do it i might as well use the lexon had so that I could leave t on as a temporary.
Junior, I can dig it. The wires make the bobber look on that thing. I may go the cafe/brat on the next build I get.
Dane, I would love to go with a small hugger style but have no access to a welder at this time. I may fab one up at some point, and have a friend do a little welding. Drilling into or through the swingarm scares me a little. TIFUN just did a kick ass one (in my opinion) on his bike and I was making quite a few inquiries trying to figure it all out.
Meh no need for a welder. Put an old blanket over the tire and swinger coat it in tape, wax it up and make a fiberglass one. Has the contour of your tire and the right angle to bolt to your swinger.
Then bondo, sand, repeat and paint. Makes it lightweight and you don't have to use a welder. People can correct me if I am wrong but you should be fine bolting it to the swinger, it is what I am going to do if I ever get to that point.
The one Tifun did bolts under his battery box. From what I can tel he drilled through his swingarm to mount the battery box and the hugger attaches at that point via an L bracket.
G, I do have those carbs we discussed but haven't checked them out yet. And I ended up using all 500 parts (boots, orings, cable, etc). I'm pretty busy the next couple days but I'll keep ya updated.

No rush, goal is to keep it ridable in between mods or I'll have to wait till later. I only have the one bike. I am waiting on the exhaust so either way I go there will be some minor changes.
