'71 CB350
Hi all,

At the point on the build of my '71 CB350 that it's time to rebuild the engine, which is stuck. Here's my dilemma, I was hoping to free the pistons with a rubber mallet or dead blow(just enough to get them to budge/break free) once the head was off, but I can't get the head off unless I rotate the engine. So... in short, I need to unstick the engine to remove the timing chain to remove the head so I can unstick the engine.
Confused? Me too!

So far I have had PB blaster in the cylinders for about 6 weeks, then tried to use a wrench on the generator rotor to rotate the engine, but no luck.

Can the cam shaft be removed with the timing chain intact? I don't see how this is possible but maybe I'm missing something. ???

Other option is to cut the chain and replace it, but finding one is proving to be tough!

Any help or ideas?

Thanks,

Tim

Wee Todds here........there aint's no master linkings(no master link) your engine is's stuck good! whats da ucks with this ky blaster( I'm having a nf moment) geezzz,,find some diesel fuel and fill into the motor,,,,to the figgin max and let it sit,,, crank like a bitch on the alternator rotor..opposite to the rotation of the motor,,,,,,,think out of the dumb!! if need be, pour hot oil into each cylinder,,,then crank it........or buy a free roller...................DUH TODD

PB Blaster is the lubricant of the gods. i used it on a rusted pistol from WW2 when the slide was shut. sprayed the hell out of it and broke loose the next morning... i have like 10 cans in my foot locker....

The use of heat usually help break parts away from each other,,,even if it expands your now farked piston and rings,,as it cools the rings may break away from the cylinder walls, heat up some old waste oil!! and chucks er in!!

I think Crazy's got yur best chance. Your gonna hav to slit your bottom end, but I dont think theres enough slack. But really, it sounds like your gonna gave to take a dremel to your timing chain. I used an air impact hammer with a grinded down to get some parts moving.

When you say take a dremel to the chain, do you mean cut it? Also, an impact hammer with grinded down what? I think there is a missing word.

Thanks Imoale, been following your threads, might need one of your tensioners!

I just did this with a cb360 (and other 350s as well). The easiest and best way to free a stuck motor is to soak it with lubricant overnight and rock the bike back and forth while it is in gear. It usually takes 5 or 10 minutes of rocking, but it will tell you right up front if it is going to free up or not. I realize that your motor is removed, but it might be worth while to throw in back in and throw the chain back on. If this is not an options please disregard.

I have taken a few of the 350s apart and I can't think of a way to get the cam out without rotating the engine. Even with the cam chain tensioner removed, the cam sprocket unbolted and the cylinderhead side caps (that hold the cam) removed you still have to get the lobes past the cam sprocket and past the casting on the head.

Also, these motor are cheap and it might be better to just get yourself another core that turns over.

Good luck,
John

Sorry sometimes I speak but only I hear myself LOL.. Yes cutting the chain might be the only way to get at the cylinder. The rocking Tech might work if it is only slightly stuck. did you find any bits of metal when you took off the side cover? The impact hammer is for after you cut the chain and need to push out the cylinder from the jug.

Grind off the peened side of the cam chain link, split the chain and wire each end so it doesn't fall into the case. Now the head will come off! say good bye to your pistons and rings,,,pound on them with a soft wood drift,,,,,,and a big hammer,if they don't move,,split the cases and salvage as much as you can,,,,,,,start over,,, one other thing DID has #219 master links for cam chains,,,but you need tool or spend the $30.00 for a new chain...........and Happy Festivas!!!!! ;D

Since funds are so limited, first I'll try to get the chain off without cutting it, and do the best to save the engine. I appreciate every ones input!. Unfortunately rocking the bike back and forth isn't an option as it is completely, and I mean COMPLETELY, torn apart. Wish I would have thought of that before I tore it apart.

Wee Todd, you say that DID has the chains, who is DID and how do I reach them?

Thanks,

Tim

Okay how do you get the tensioner out without removing the top end? Not being snobby just cant figure out how you say this is possible PJ? Cant really get into the jug bolts without removing the head, right? Especially if they have been there for ever and are gonna need some torq. I can see splitting the bottom end but is there enough room to clear the alignment pegs to get the bearings out?

Oh I see alot of DID on ebay maybe you can find a master link there. If you decide to go with WTods advise. I guess it depends on if you wanted to split he bottom case.

First off if it sounded smartass it wasn't ment too. Second I never asked you to justify anything. Third why am I even keeping this up?

Sorry Tim this is lame sorry I bugged you. Merry Christmas.
Sorry xdk last post on like this for me.

First off, thank you all for all the input you have provided, I appreciate the fact that I can post a question that has me stopped dead in my tracks and get multiple possibilities as to how I can overcome my road block. The fact that other people are willing to take time to reply simply because we all have a common interest speaks volumes to the type of people that are on here.

In regards to IMOALES post that has seemed to get others upset so much; well I was wondering the same as him, in fact I never once thought it came across as snobby, smart ass or out of line. I read it as him simply asking a knowledgeable person to clarify a previous post. PJcrazy, I think might have been too quick to assume that someone was challenging your credentials.

Again, thank you IMOALE, PJcrazy, Wee Todd, and the others who all gave me very good information.

Have a very safe and Merry Christmas!!!

Tim
