Not disagreeing with anything Tun-a is saying, but with carbs you want to eliminate one variable at a time. There are two adjustment screws on the outside of the carb. One for air and the throttle stop for fuel. The air screw should be from 3/4 to 1 1/4 turns out. It should make the bike idle go up as it turns in. Once you get the air set, then adjust the throttle stop to get the idle right. Once you know those settings are as they should be, if you still have problems, then you know it's something else. I'd check the float bowl next and it doesn't hurt to check the jets at the same time. Get the smallest guitar string (G) and run it through the jets.

It's a fuel screw, not sure if that makes a difference at all.
But I'll play with that until I can get it idling fine and go from there.

Thanks for all the help guys, first time I've ever posted in search of help on a forum, already liking all of the help and giving me somewhere to start!

If you want to set the idle at baseline, you can use like and 1/8" drill bit under the slide, twist the throttle up and gently let it land on the bit, turn the adjuster in just until you can pull the bit out, run the air screw all the way in to just snug dont reef on it, then back it out 1-3/4 turns. That should put you in and idle spot to start with around 900-1100 rpm provided you have close needle and pilot jet settings... just be happy you don't have three more next to the one you have.

Yeah.. Thank goodness.
I purposely wanted a single carb bike to be my first bike to learn on because I can't even imagine having to wrap my mind around three others..
I get out of school at 3, then I'll go to work testing.

My needle is set to the middle spot on the needle, and I have a 38 pilot.. Is that close like it should be or should I move up or down on the needle?

Needle will be the easy first step, drop it to the #2 spot... 38/105 is baseline, what pipe if open and have a muffler of any sort lets get it on there.

If your needle clip is set in the middle then you have other problems. Lowering the clip raises the needle.

Tun-a wouldn't there be another issue if he's already in the middle on the needle and that lean?

Yeah, seems something is blocking fuel "starving" and I am not gonna kid ya, I'm hands on so going to baseline and starting from scratch is the only way to go about it via PC tips vs fingertips for me anywhooo

I'm going to completely disassemble, clean, and reassemble every part of the carb, then set the fuel screw, and idle, and then report back.
Fuel line wise the fuel line is brand new and I checked the pet cock whenever I drained the tank and put new gas in and it's fine as well.

Pulled the pilot and I can hardly see any light through it so I'm going to clean the rest of the carb and put the aftermarket 40 in until I get the 38 cleaned.
