Honda CB550 four.. single carb.

i have fit the 350 w ones from goldwing into the cxs quite a lot but not into cb

i have even put a few in other engine simple if you have the space but boy do they make some heat!

And all that heat is wasted energy. In other words that saps some of the power from the bike. Alternators, like intake systems, have to be right sized. For example a tiny alternator may be fine on a drag race bike where the rules say that it must have a charging system, but would be useless on that same bike on the street.

A 350 watt charging system on a bike that never needs much more than say 150 watts is wasting power at most speeds. The odd exception is if a charging system has insufficient output at low revs and that bike is usually run at low revs, then a larger alternator might be a good fix, even though it would waste power at revs the bike rarely, if ever, reaches.

Sometimes a slightly larger battery and small stock charging system are a better fit. It's all about getting the right combination of parts for a particular application.

yeahbut, teazer, what difference does it make? if you lose a little power ? its not like it is a modern bike or anything :p

:)

And with Firestone clown shoes you need as little power as possible, because they are unsafe at any speed, so it makes sense.......

Sometimes it is the way to go, but not often.
I was converting a GT750 to EFI at one point and reed valves and needed a larger alternator to drive it all, so I grabbed a GSXR inside out that made a heck of a lot more electrons. In that application it made sense. It was part of an overall redesign. That project is still at the back of the shop. Too many other bikes got in the way.

And wih any luck my TZ will arrive from Australia tomorrow and all other projects will be pushed to the back of the shop.

And let's take a look at the power lost, too...

350W is half a horsepower (assuming 100% efficiency, which we definitely don't have). The loss is there, but it's not huge.

A big reason to switch to FI on a vintage bike in my mind is that you can run modern 10% ethanol fuel no problemo whatsoever. Im sick and tired of my dang fuel bowls/needles getting stuck.

Do you have any more info about that picture posted by the way with the belt drive alternator? I have heard about them but dont know my ass from my elbow in regards to them.

That engine is also supercharged, I believe, which would definitely aid in running that style of alternator

if you want to see a belt drive alternator look up poorboy alternator for a gl1000 gl1100

You have an issue other then the fuel....

Oh yea? Well what is it then?

you must have shit in your fuel like flaking rust particles from the tank or some other... it aint the fuel making the float needles stick....

While I agree that the 10% gas isn't the best, but will not say that it should cause endless issues.
If you are constantly getting stuck needles then you have of a myriad of possible issues.
Suggest you look over your fuel system, and learn a bit more about the modern fuels.

This would be interesting.

I've wondered about the feasibility of running a dynamo just for lighting on a bike as a component to removing the battery. Those Alfine hubs are some sweet engineering, no doubt.

Hey gents... It's not a constant problem... But it's a problem. It's why people like to run stuff like cam2
