Hondazuki XLRM250 Trans-America Hell Ride

Ha looks about the same as the one in my XL. That things has never let me down. Nice choice of engine.

I got a bit sweaty from no seller communication, no tracking info, and no shipment notification, but the XL250 motor arrived. This weekend we'll do a tear down and evaluate it's condition. Fingers crossed that it's good inside...

Is that a #sadhandie towel in the carb port? This motor is meant to be.

It's a sock. Some people like to fill socks with lotion. That could be determined to be a #sadhandie towel.

Looks really good from what I can see. Mag cases is the norm for all the old XL'z thats why they paint em that strange green color, zink oxide it stops the erosion haha! Funny tho, the new ally cases on the CRF'z have a coat of the same stuff.

The rear mount on the tank didn't match the drop in the frame, so I altered the mount to adapt...

The underside of the seat will have a cup to lock the front of the seat onto the acorn nut.

Plus CR bend Renthals and KTM controls...

I had to move the frame mounts for the XR tank and come up with a rear mount. Plus, I need a front mount for the seat. I turned down a stainless acorn nut on the lathe to make a ball and lock seat mount...

So I guess it's literally gonna take balls to use that seat now. Or at least one.. looking good man

my father ,rest his soul inherited me his complete shop and many tools that he made himself he was really into technical detail and unusual, useful tooling
so from plans he made the ball turning attatchment ,of course it works pefrectly ,it will turn pefectly sperical attachme.....er balls :D
imagine the way a world globe is held in its desk top display with half circle to catch the north south axis poles, this would be the lathe turning axis
then another 2 one just inside the other the outer is the rigid to lathe tool post
the sceond one same axis as the tool post these are both position on the equator, with the axis on center
and with differing tool stickout voila balls to any size in the range of the attachments capabilities

Motor looks decent inside. Cylinder is smooth with some discoloration, probably from moisture. Apparently, socks don't keep moisture out. A hone, and we'll be golden.

There's no doubt it burned oil. Rings are on the way. The cylinder head from this motor was okay, not great. Too much burned oil.

So, we're stealing from the other motor. It has a cleaner head. We'll get the seats cut and new valves.

All wise choices for keeping you from being pissed in a few months. This thing has to keep you in #sadhandie motion for the long haul, might as well treat her right!

Thanks, playa.

Waiting to hear back from Joe @ DWMS Racing to send the head off for a valve job. Piston rings are being shipped from Canada where the post had 4 days shutdown for Easter holiday, so there's no rush to be back together. To be continued...
