Inherited Grandpa's old Bike. Cafe Time!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGuA0bLss2U

Here is the video of it running. Sounds pretty strong. Ive got the carb synchronizer in the mail. Still trying to find out if those 72 cb450 wheels will fit my bike. Once I find out for sure, ill have everything i need for a first test ride.

Late to the game, but I have a cb500t wheel (I believe it's the same as a 450 wheel) and a cb550 wheel, the 500t wheel is narrower where if fits between the swinger

And also, great job on getting that beast fired up!

got the forks off. Couldnt get the bolts off the bottom of the forks. They are pretty snug. Any suggestions? Also couldnt get one of the fork caps off, not sure if i even needed to take it off for fork seals. ...anway. Guess ill be buying a vice tomorrow to get some good torque on those bolts. anything performance wise i can do to improve front suspension/ steering while i have the forks off?

Try sliding the fork back in the triple clamp and tighten the pinch bolts with about an inch sticking out the top. That is safer than a vice.

Then you are going to want to get a heat gun and a small propane or MAP gas torch. Also some penetrating oil.

Heat and oil are your best bet for getting that stuff apart with no damage.

Are the bolts in the bottom spinning or just not moving at all? Be careful with them, you don't want to round out the heads or you are going to have a much bigger job.

Ok I guess ill try that tonight. I had to lean the bike back to remove the front tire. I left it in that position all night and all the oil shifted to the back and I realized that oil near the front sprocket I had posted before was from a bad shifter rod seal. I already ordered the seal.

some questions again:

Will a set of 72 cb450 tires fit my 74 cb550?

Should I remove the springs from my forks for any reason?

If I permanently remove my starter, will any modifications be needed to seal or enclose anything?

Are you talking about tires or wheels and hubs, because if your talking about wheels and hubs, im pretty sure I answered this question a few posts up =)

No worries man, I figured you had just missed it. I do want to clarify that I said that cb450 wheels will not fit a cb550, at least not without modification and some spacers being made. They are different. A cb450 wheel and a cb500t (t is for twin) wheel are the same.

I have a cb500t wheel and a cb550 wheel, and they are different. The 500t wheel is about an inch narrower at the hub, and the sprocket lashup is also different. The rim and spokes are the same, but the hub itself will be different. I would recommend just picking up the rear wheel for the 550.

Also, im pretty sure if you put an add up here in the "buying" section, someone would have one for sale (sorry, im keeping mine). There is also a rescent thread in the "selling" section where a guy is parting out an entire 78 cb550. I would bet he may have a wheel for it too.

Edit: he has a wheel, here is the thread:

cheers

Hi mate the 450 will only fit the 550 if you extend the offset spacer on the brake drum side to keep it centred same with the front end needs wider spacer either side to keep the wheel centered heres a couple of pics of how I did it

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if there is a spacer on the rear wheel right side and any side on the front wheel, wont the wheels not be in alignment with each other and not ride straight? If not where can I get those spacers?

Sorry mate should have explained better the rear wheel got lined up with the front sprocket to rear sprocket actually had chain on mine that gives you the measurement for the rear brake side spacer then using two straight edges line up the front wheel central to the rear wheel and the front tyre / rim equal distance between the front forks so you have both wheels in line along with the front forks then you can measure for the spacers for the front spacers that go BOTH sides of the front wheel I actually made mine on a little hobby laithe out of some spare bronze I had left from making my own swing arm bushes ile post up more pics and measurements tomm if it helps mate

Yes your fork stanchions are scrap.

Good job so far. Slow and steady wins the race.

No need to fix ten things at once.

Those fork stanchions don't have to be scrap... Cut them in half, drill holes through one end an inch or so up, wrap rubberized tape from the holes to about 6" up, tie a good thick leather strap through the holes, slide one under the seat of every car/truck you own
