Is my hub now a paper weight?

It's already done :/ I'm contemplating getting my polished parts powdered clear. What are your thoughts on that?

You'll lose some of the "pop" (10-20%) but it's an accepted trade off from having to polish them all the time. Just make sure you have meticulously cleaned off all the polishing compound.

24hr. service on the repair, jeebus you couldn't ask for better.

No having everything powder coated is done but the repair won't be done till Thursday, picking up on Monday so the owner will be in. I dealt with his son, but the owner builds and fly helicopters which is something I want to get into. (Flying not building, I don't trust myself with that build!)

You guys serious on the powderpricing? I have a dude that does a complete bike for 250,- including blasting and prepping.

Frame, rims, hubs, basicly all things metal. engine mounts, tripletree, lower forks, swinger.. etc..
Its in glossy black only. All other colors i get done by a different coater who charges 100 for a frame wich is already blasted. The first coater blasts a frame for 15 so i get a frame in any color, metallics to for 115,-

Now, im talking about euros but they are about worth the same.

Problem in the US, 'as seen on TV' means people think it's the 'ONLY' thing you can do so PC places charge accordingly.
Few years ago it was custom paint and chrome that got completely blown up of proportion after OCC and Jesse James were on TV (set of Harley 'tins' single colour, no mettallic, pearl's, etc, $1,500~$2,000)
People here keep drinking the 'Cool Aid' like a bunch of sheep

I just had a frame and pile of small parts powdercoated in Australia for $170. He said he usually charges 180 for a stock frame but this one is a CB77 with less tubes, so he cut his price slightly. He charged me 200 for frame and swingarm on a Yamaha twin a couple of years back.

My guy in Racine WI is more expensive by about 25% but he has more overheads to cover.

It was a pretty steep price but a guy that owns a Harley shop and has for countless years in my neighborhood recommended them and showed me the work he had done by them, so I knew I was getting a good job but will probably shop around more next time. And if you thin that was expensive getting parts that couldn't be powdered coated painted is insane.

I build race bikes, so don't pay other people to paint them. Rattle can is fine for most projects.

I had my frame, 2 swingarms and a bunch of various brackets all done for $200 here in Toronto a while back. Gloss black at an industrial coating place (i.e. not an auto paint shop). They do racks, shelves, furniture etc.

You can also choose any color you want, and pay a color change fee of about $50 or so if I recall. Good solid work for basic stuff like frames, rims etc.

That included all prep work - blasting, plugging holes, masking threads.

I wish I had the skills to do the prep work and paint but I already know I would screw it up. Lucky enough I have a friend who went to school for auto body work and paint. He's going to do it for cost of supplies only but I'll definitely be giving him more in the end for all his hard work. I'm also going to have done gold leaf done which I personally love the look of and that's another pretty penny.

Here's the way is see it. your buddy that does the whole bike for $200 or whatever is doing it for Beer and cigarette money, probably not doing it for a living or a business or he would have other colors. Bet he has a day job doing something else. The commercial outfits will do it cheaper because they don't do all the correct procedures to ensure a long lasting, durable job. all they do is hang the shit on a conveyor line and spray it with a phosphate coating to make it rust resistant and shoot it and send it down the line. they have to do an "acceptable job" for the money charged. Seldom is it a show finish. The conveyor runs at a constant speed so you don't know if the mass of the part you are having coated is undercured or overcured. you want that cool Flourescent Green color, sure we'll do it but it will cost $50 extra to change from the black we shoot all day, everyday and we'll shoot yours when we are done with the black. It may be 30 days before that happens because we will have to change the color and set the whole conyeyor system up to shoot your few parts. The Harley shop that referred you doesn't care much what they pay because they pass it on to the end customer, most of who spend really stupid money on custom bikes these days. $100k for a motorcycle, Really?

I do this for a living. I have overhead. Shop space, electric, water, eqiupment, stock over 100 colors, advertising. I treat every one of your parts as though they are going on a show bike. every part get chemically strip so the blasting doesn't remove much if any material and I don't have to aggressively blast it. each part in the oven is monitored for time and temp to be sure the are cured correctly. And I turn parts in a timely manor, usually 3-5 days instead of weeks like most commercial outfits. You would be surprised how many wheels I have done for $125 each that I would have done for $100 that were coated last year by the guy in his garage for $25 a piece. as they say: You get what you pay for.

Rattle canning has it's place but have you priced a professional paint job lately, It cost almost $400+ just for quality materials before you ever add in the cost of prep or shooting the paint.

no doubt. But my guy is like you said, a conveyor guy. I dont care. he knows he gets it back if i dont like the job. Happened once, he knows im a bitch. I do it for frames and rims and such. Pretty stuff goes to another guy.

You can't use your beer buddy as an example to others for the price of coating. Most of the commercial outfits around here if you have a problem good luck getting them to correct it or even discuss it with you.
Like I always say when they try and negotiate my price:" If your uncles wife's sister's boyfriends cousin can do it for $35 and a 6 pack, why are you wasting my time?" I'm not the cheapest coater in town but there's a damn good reason for that, I don't cut corners nor my prices. If the other guys could do what I can do then I would have competition.

I agree. And like I said another place I was looking at was going to do it cheaper but they seem to only really focus on car rims. Also if you guys can help me I remember seeing a few posts on here by one of the members who did powder coating. I thought I saved the thread but apparently I did not. From the photos he posted he seemed to do pretty good work and wasn't far from me. I thought the thread was called something like "shooting some powder coating this weekend" if anyone can remember this thread and user let me know....this is his site http://www.thepowderpro.com/contact/

I'm on Long Island too. Have you checked out Rainbow powder coating? They have been doing PC since the 80's.

Last I remember they did some nice work. Couldn't tell you how their pricing is now though.

its not my beer buddy, but it comes close. i know what you mean and i feel you. it's just that 250 against 850 is a huge difference so i understand myself going with the cheaper one :)
