KDX 200 Project thing

i think you're fine doing what you're doing. although i'd try to keep that "race" rd. we get titled frames in once in a while

Wait wait, you still have the kdx, and as a running project?

I do still have the KDX.
Right now it's in pieces, I've been working on it bit by bit getting pieces primed and painted, but I'm at a disadvantage as I can only touch it whenever I drive home.
I'm shooting for it to be done by May.

Re: KDX 200 Project thing

I just got that wrong, I implied that you sold the kdx.

As tuna said, this is your thread and you can do as you please. I just got a bit overboard thinking you got rid of the KDX, and then teasing with ones you wouldn't wrench on either

My bad.

Little update on the KDX, I went home and sold the stock RD350, and spent the day in the shop painting stuff, I got the wheels, forks, brake hub, frame, and swing arm painted.. Next time I visit home I will get the motor and pipes cleaned up and painted as well, and from there I should only have small bits to paint and can start assembly.

I also fabbed a mounted for an ignition because currently this bike still runs with out one dirt bike style..

KDX 200 Project thing

This also happened today. Scored this KX250 front end today for a Benjamin Franklin. This one will definitely be a direct swap in with some new bearings and half the hassle the KTM front end was turning out to be.

Tips for checking to see if I need to rebuild/put it in new seals? They seem pretty oily.

if they're oily there's a good chance they need seals. good news is a kit is less than $30 and fairly simple to do, I would do them regardless.

Yeah, good performing suspension is always great. Do them, it's a simple fix

Do you think you still have to make those shorter for the KDX?

Yeah, I have a feeling I'll still have to drop these a bit to get the proper stance. I won't know for sure until their mocked up but I have a feeling I'll have to drop them probably about 4 inches internally, in regards to rebuilding them ill just do that regardless!
Doesn't hurt.

You mean only changing oil seals?

Because changing the seals, and dropping the fork means almost the same disassembly procedure.

I think if the dust seals are OK you'll be good. Dust seals protect oil seals. Your new ones may last less, but as you are on a budget that's the best way to tackle this (money wise) so the forks perform well.

Oh no, I meant to go ahead and JUST get oil seals.
While I'm already into the forks I'm going to work to get the perfect stance I'm wanting. Just trying to watch videos on internal fork lowering and get an idea of what I'll be doing, all looks pretty straight forward.

Buy em with dust seals also, worst thing ever is to set out to do seals and fuck up a duster... now wut right.

Okay, so I have all the parts found, it's like 30 bucks for new fork/dust seals, and it'll probably be another 30 for the all balls conversion, my only concern is this, he says he THINKS it's off a 1992.
I can't seem to find a part number stamp anywhere.. I just don't want to go and buy a bunch of stuff for the 1992 model and it not work.. Thoughts?
I thought if I was able to find a part number I could look it up but I'm not having luck.

You could also take the old bearings of the fork and measure the diameter of the stem, and know for sure which fork you do have. Cross reference those numbers to what all balls bearing is suggesting you.

Good call, that's similar to what I was doing on the KTM forks to figure the year out on them, I'll try that tonight.

I actually was able to get the guy who sold me the forks to shoot me the vin off the frame they were on, they are actually 1990 kx250 forks which is a huge difference as what I would of bought wouldn't of fit.

I just bought new oil and dust seals as well as the conversion tapered bearings all for 40 bucks. I saved myself about 35-40 bucks just doing it through eBay with the measurements as opposed to buying through all-balls.

ha, do the same thing on all the tapered bearing sets I get for these old bikes. ebay is quite a bit cheaper

I see why everyone says fork seals are a bitch.. But needless to say, new oil and dust seals..
Now I won't have oil leaking in my car constantly.
Whenever I get home I'll take measurements and figure out how much I wanna drop them, in the mean time before I go home and do that I will doing the body work on the tank this week.
