KDX 200 Project thing

I have run into a bit of a problem.
I'm not familiar with welding whatsoever, and bought an aluminum weld in gas cap because the gas cap on my tank currently doesn't want to seat right.
So, I thought I would do this as a solution, but I'm now realizing that I definitely don't have a tank that will want to weld the aluminum on too. I'm assuming my tank is probably steel? What do you guys think, will this aluminum bung weld into my current tank, or should I seek a new steel weld in gas cap.

Nope...you need a steel weld in one.. Have a look at chassisshop.com. not sure if the prices are competitive or not though. They make ones that dont require welding but I dont know if they are leak prone.

Go figure I bought it 17 days ago and there's a 14 day return policy but regardless I'm still going to try to get a refund on that, and probably order this one! Frustrating but it'll be a learning experience for me.

I doubt its not steel but try a magnet and see. that steel rig will do the trick

The problem itself isn't the gasket I believe. I think someone just tossed in a different cap that doesn't fit, I'll fiddle with it some more but I just can't seem to get it to work.
Once I get done slingin' pizzas at work I'll post up some pics!

we've parted out many dts at my work. will probably have a ton of gas caps that will work (made for that tank) if you need one

I may have to take you up on that one sir!

Seems like you ought to be able to get the factory cap to seal, but if not, try these guys, I get my caps from them and they have a wide selection.

This one came from them and is silver soldered to the tank in the pic - not that hard to do.

Okay, here are the pictures, I just noticed one of the tabs on the cap appears to be ether broken off, or shortened, so much so that once I manage to twist it on the cap will still pull off.

The blade will move over and the cap will go down better, but not with out a little effort. For the time being it works..
Body work has begin take place. I was only able to work on it for an hour or so today.

I really hate to burst your bubble man but that redman putty is the worst for filler you can buy... its for tiny scratches and maybe a chip but not a filler at all. You really should strip it to bare metal prime it then fill the lows with some dynalite or something and hit the lows then draw the same filler with long spreader strokes watch a youtube
