Krazy Katana

Id go ahead and drop the oil pan of you can. See whats in the screens, and if you can see anything from the bottom. At this point it has to be done anyway to check for more frag

Just went back to the beginning of the thread and saw what was in the gas tank when you got it. Things are making some sense now.

Time to pull the engine.

Yep, no more spinning has been attempted haha. Just buttoning the covers back up for tonight. I'll take the oil pan off Wednesday and see how it looks down there.
I can get the head and I believe the cylinders off without pulling the engine. Can I get away with leaving it in?

Nope you have chunks of piston in the engine you need to do it right. Last thing you wanna do is rebuild the engine only to have a piece of piston cause a trans failure. That is my opinion.

I'd look hard at those parts bikes.

Fair enough. I'll drop the engine later this week and see what I have to work with. Depending on how bad it is, it might be time to let this bike go. :'( Just need to figure out how much I'll have to put in and decide if its still worth it.
Here are those parts bikes.

I also know there's a salvage yard in Fresno (closer to me than either of those) that has a pretty clean Katana 600 parts bike. Minus trashed fairings, that is.

You're gonna spend heaps more than $300 opening up your motor so if the first one sounds OK / no knocks grab it.

That and my cases/covers are beat up from the unknown (but I figure at least 4) times the po dropped the bike

If that's part of a piston it looks really clean and new, so it might be part of the clutch basket. It all has to be flushed out. I would pull the motor and drop the oil pan or whatever that motor has on the bottom end and look for shrapnel. If the screen and oil pick up show any bits of metal, the motor needs to be stripped and flushed out - or replaced.

Well, I found out where that piece of metal came from.

Based on how much is missing I figure there's quite a bit floating around in the trans and stuff. Still need to pull the oil pan and motor though.

Woohoo! At least she went out in style. Not quite full on explosion style, but at least this way I didn't lay her down because the engine blew, seized, and vomited oil on my tire.
