This how I plan to do my rear sets on the budget. I don't if it would be comfortable for you(I am 6'-5" so my legs are pretty long) but I am running my pegs from the passenger pegs and flipping the shifter (gp style now) and the brake lever I flipped and creating a shorten brake pedal. The brake rod is rotated to wear the push pull is flipped for it to work probably since it will rotating the other direction.
So I've been doing alot of staring and making very slow progress. I recently picked up some early EX500 Rearset for a pretty decent price. I've got the brake side mount roughed in, but it still needs some major touching up and massaging. Here are the pictures of some of the progress.
It's not too pretty yet. I've got a bunch of grind/sanding out the edges and rough spots. I'm pretty happy with how solid it is though. One more side to make then ill drill the mounting holes. Plan after that is to tear down the bike and sandblast then powder or paint for frame, rims, and triple not sure which yet.
I was hoping the ex500 might be a easy way for rear sets for these bikes, but looks like it will be some work to get them to work. The rear sets from omar are looking more enticing each day for easy clean way to do them. Just have to try and justify paying $300+ for them kind of sucks.
When it's all said and done I will have about $75 in them. The goal is to have them as sturdy and clean as possible in the end. I like the idea of keeping my shifting pattern the same and keeping good leverage on my brake side for the rear drum. In the end I think I will get the result I'm looking for but it will be a lot of work.
Ya I have since ditched my original idea, I am either going to try and do some type of custom one by ordering the necessary parts from fastfromthepast.com or just biting the bullet and buying the raask rear sets. Definitely interested in seeing how they come out.
Ya I researched the tarozzi sets from fastfromthepast as well. Expensive and still would need a bit of modifying to be comfortable to me. I'm not sure about the raasks but I wasn't able to find a "kit" to bolt right in. Everything I saw would take some adapting and be terribly expensive. Good luck though I'm interested to see what you come up with.
Ya raask make some that fit our bike, here is youtube of a 77 kz650 cafe that is running the rear sets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF45_KD-QDc but may have to modify the kick start.
I also had to cut and move the "clevis?" mount on my brake lever to properly fit the new angle and also shave off all of the excess tabs and what not.
Still obviously need to clean up the rearset. Just getting it fitted.
I had to rework the original connection to the drum to get the clearance I needed. I double checked the range of motion to make sure the moving parts were not contacting each other. I did this by removing the shocks and lifting the frame and sitting it all the way down. No contact between any parts. Lastly I had to check to make sure the brake engaged. If anyone sees a problem that I missed with mounting it this way, please speak up. Brakes are kind of important.
Put some small gussets in... I may be regretting this decision. Please weigh in on this. The braces toward the front of the bike are replacing old side panel mounts that pulled double time as a small gusset. The gusset low and center is a new addition... Not sure if its counter productive. I suppose this is what happens when you mix spare metal, spare time and new welder...
Next order of business was moving my kickstand because it interfered with my shifter. I couldn't find a spot that made me happy and did not interfere with the shifter... So I decided to make an attempt at a telescopic kickstand. I have a vision but this could end up as one big waste of time... Either way I'm going to attempt it and keep my fingers crossed. I'm just using things I have laying around to make it. As always chime in with suggestions.

SCH 80 nipples for inner tube...
Cut the threads off and set them in angle iron to keep straight while I welded together.
It fits... First pic is going to be about as compact as I want it... Second pic is a bit short of where it will end up fully extended which should give me at least three inches of travel.
Just need to snag up the right size spring... Make a foot and well shit there's a lot left to do...
Fit a new spring ... It works well and collapses smoothly. I just need to create a latch to stop it from retracting while in use followed by some cleaning up/grinding then its problem solved and time will tell if it holds up.
Kickstand is functional and give me about 4 inches of extension and retraction. Still needs a bit of fine tuning and obviously needs cleaned up and made pretty but I'm just glad it functions as planned and gives me enough space from my rear sets.
