Re: 77 KZ650 Cafe Build

That kickstand is fantastic bowman!

In regards to your gussets, did you weld them on tangentially or in the centre of the pipe? I cant tell from the pics (viewing them on my phone). Its hard to explain but the pic below should explain it better.

It was my understanding that unless the gussets are welded as a tangent to the curve, their strengthening properties would be negligable.

Re: 77 KZ650 Cafe Build

Thanks Greene

As far as the Gussets go I put them in wrong, I'm debating on wether or not to change them, because there were no gussets there to begin with and I also used 1/8 steel to gusset them. Its my understanding that if the Gusset is thick enough steel then it still provides structural support. I'm no braniac on the subject though so I am willing to take advice for sure.

Updates? My buddy found me a KZ650 but the guy wants 1000 bucks for it. I definitely dont have that kind of money.

Re: 77 KZ650 Cafe Build

I've hit a bit of a road block and some other "quick" projects came into the picture. I should have some more stuff posted up by the end of the weekend. I've been doing a lot of little stuff like cleaning up rearsets, finish welding some things that I had tacked on etc.,

Kz650-"My Project has Projects"

I sat down and started to make a list of all the things I need to do and the order to do them. Guess where I started to get frustrated at the amount of work still ahead.
I'm sure I forgot stuff this is just a rough list.

Clean kickstand up.
Basic wiring (Wire from Mark, Connectors from Fastenal.com)
Rear Brake switch and mount (Z1enterprises.com)
Petcock rebuild (Ebay donor part)
Headlight test
Gauges-check fitting and mounts
Front fender clean and cut
Fab Rear mudguard (fiberglass or metal)
Measure and make new clutch and throttle cables. (Flanderscable.com)
Make rear tail light and housing (Lowbrow Customs DIY link)
Check, double check and triple check everything.
Start bike.
Tear down. Strip remaining paint.
Body work, paint, polish.
Replace steering stem bearings, wheel bearings, fork seal. Reassemble.
Inevitable troubleshooting
<Insert a bunch of shit I forgot to do>
Quit
Restart troubleshooting
Break thing, curse, repeat

A bit more cleaning up of some of the pieces still a bit of cleaning left but its almost finished enough to prime and paint.

A picture of it put together the bolt toward the bottom still needs to be trimmed to the right length. Right now it's entirely too long.

Thanks Ronnie. Damn thing has taken forever to get right. Lots of trial and error. It was necessary based on my rearset placement. Then it just became a mission to make it work hands free.

As far as getting rid of it goes.... Well I wouldn't have a kickstand anymore. And considering no others will fit, I'd be screwed.

I thought about it but I also have not been able to figure out a way of making them without tying up hours on hours making one. Which would not make it an affordable item lol.

I've made it so that the kickstand can be completely taken apart and the spring inside can be replaced and maintenanced but its tricky. I would hate to sell them and have folks have trouble with it. Afterall its only been on my bike a month or two. But it has worked flawlessly thus far.

Pretty much have the kickstand cleaned up and it's still functions as before just looks cleaner and ready for paint and primer. Now onto better things.

Yes sir I am. However I recently moved to the greater Pittsburgh area and am moving my tools and what not. Also it's not helping that I am working 11 hours a day 6 days a week. But on a positive note ill be stepping up the quality of the items I'm buying for it (thanks to the OT). I'm hoping to get settled in my new place and have progress pics and updates within a couple weeks.
