Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid/ Christine: CASE BACK OPEN...

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

Ahhhh a belt sander... Why didn't I think of that! (smacks forehead) Thanks! Definitely doing that to mine! And Ill be using a metal file and softpad on a side grinder for my mill haha

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

That's a hell of an undertaking, Tyler. You planning on building it yourself?

And you know me, I have to suggest this: carbon fiber? That's one thing I could help ya with. ;)

Either way, I'm glad you're taking it to the next level!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

ok have to derail this sucker for a min.... Ringo... what kind of help can you give for carbon fiber... i am getting ready to paint my snowmobile tunnel and would MUCH rather do carbon fiber of some kind... any recomendations?

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

I'm just slowly starting to get skookum in composites. I might be able to reproduce your part in cf, Joe. Or give you some pointers...

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

ahhh the part is huge, hahahah i think i may just do vynal wrap... thanks man but i would love to learn to do carbon fiber

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

Yeah man, it's just like glass, but you gotta make it purty, cause everything's visible unless you paint it.

Sorry for the hijack, T!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

Hey, no worries! CF is an awesome idea.

I want to stay with the aluminum, though, just to keep that look going. I dunno, though, there might be some room for some CF on this yet, though. I was thinking about it for a front fender....

But heck the cardboard is pretty light, and already build. Maybe I'll just daub some Caswell in there and call it good! ;D

I should have the aluminum on its way soon!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

Oh, and for Joe: EVERYBODY our here is doing wraps. They work really well because they don't scrape off in the trees ;D

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

solid!!! do you iknow if i have to strip the tunnel down to metal or just lay it right over the top?

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

If you mean strip off paint, powder or anodizing, no, just wrap right over the top!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...change is in the air!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...t'ank goodness!

Got all my pieces for the tank cut and fit today. I need to round up some bungs, and then will be ready to weld it all together. Here it is, mocked up on the bike:

It weighs in at 5 lbs so far. I'm not sure about the stock tank weight, but it's pretty darn light! It's also super comfy to sit around, and the cut aways allow for really easily getting up on the tank! There are a lot of changes to be made once it is welded together--speed holes, some shaping, and of course cutting the seat out to fit around.

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...t'ank goodness!

^^^^^^^^ Diggin the shape, the height seems a bit up there.... ??? like 4ish inches to much... jus my 2cents....^^^^^

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...t'ank goodness!

Thanks for the input. I had to sacrifice and add some height in order to narrow the tank. Like I mentioned earlier, though, it should be a lot lower visually once the cut outs have been done in the lower tank panel. 4" shorter would pretty much cut my capacity to about a gallon. Only the upper half of the "tank" is actually tank, and the bottom half is covering the airbox. This will get cut out so as to reduce the visual mass of the side of the tank.

I really wanted to narrow the tank in order to be able to better tuck in and pull forward when cornering, as the stock tank was a little obstructive that way. Just not a lot oof rom under the tank with the big ol' airbox...

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...t'ank goodness!

I dunno man. I might leave it as is. Modern gas doesn't eat thru duct tape, does it? Just put some stabil in there, you'll be fine! :D

I like what you have going on here Tyler.

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...t'ank goodness!

Thanks for the kind words, fellas. A little tough to visualize still, I know, but should end up right! This is just the start of the reworking.

Or, like I said earlier, I could just throw some Caswell in there and call it a day! ;D

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...t'ank goodness!

Damn, this is inspirational!

Have you considered with going with a retro rectangular front reflector lamp? It would perhaps flow better with the angular cowl that you have.
