It doesn't look like much, but I've been plugging away on the bike. I forgot to take picture of what the frame looked like prior to getting chopped, but suffice to say it was completely different. The reason for the chopping is because the new aluminum tank did not fit on the frame properly. So I had to basically redo everything.
These pics show the chopping and smoothing I did, as well as welding in new frame pieces. I connected the backbone to the damper mount tube and welded in some smaller supports. You can also see the R6 damper I'll likely use.
These tabs will be the upper damper mount--except they might be too short. I have a friend putting the tabs in CAD and laser cutting them for me. That will let me lower the damper mount 1/4" and 1/2", which makes a huge difference. I may not even use them, but it all depends on the wheel/tire combo when I get them mounted up.
Right now, I'm waiting for my wheels to come back from powdercoating. Then the fun stuff begins. That said, I leave for Europe on Sat for a few weeks, so don't hold your breath.
wow these suckers where fun, chem tank did not touch what was on the, blasted that off to find chrome was under whatever the gold substance was, def was not anidized or paint so who knows.... coated them, they outgassed like hell, stripped them back down, 2 coats of primer, sanded, and top coat..... so pretty! Chris they look great bud!
Joe what is that color? Looks amazing, you do great work, looks almost like there is some violet in there, am i right? Check out this blog... scroll down and see the wheel restoration this guy did on a set of BMW OEM wheels, I love this violet color... oh yeah and he is a member of this board, building a cb450 with webber carbs
promised chris i would keep the color a secret till he does the reveal, but i can assure you there is no violet in there. it is a very antique looking color.

I totally respect that... Bummer now is i gotta wait for chris to finish the build Looks great, knowing that it is an antique finish helps the pictures out a bit... I think what comes off as purple could be the light bouncing around on the surface a bit. Also could be my monitor... in fact, yep it is, I just moved the window to my other screen and it looks more brown... well all I can say is that it looks sick, those pirellies will look mean when they get mounted. Can't wait to see this one finished!
just make sure that the wheel is true before you do it! cause with the powder you can never true the wheel again. i spun Chris's wheel on the truing stand, his front was almost dead on, his rear wheel took some adjusting but spun true in about 20 min. blast and coat and all that good stuff... wheels go out of true so so rare but if you true them first and then coat you are good to go!
Sorry for being so quiet on this. I've been out of the country for a few weeks. Thanks for knocking out the work Joe. Those do look amazing but you know that because we've been chatting. Sorry you had so much trouble with those wheels. They seemed like they were in much better condition than that.
Hopefully, I have everything waiting for me when I get home. I haven't asked, but I think packages have slowly begun trickling in. The wheels are a biggie, though, so I'm really looking forward to getting them. It will be interesting to see what those dual sport tires look like on the bike.
Chris , after seeing your other bikes, I am super psyched to see what you do with this one. Kind of different and should be a pretty cool end product. Can't wait until you get back and start posting up some progress of this thing.
Wow! Two months and no progress. I'm still chugging along an lining things up in m head. I hope to have some time to work on her this week. If nothing else, I'll blast and polish the tank.
I do think I'll change direction on this a bit and make it a single seater. It's not like the 125cc engine is going to rip hair out with two people on it. Anyway, look for progress soon.
This might be my most anticipated build on this site. I have no idea why, but the idea of bobbing out a ratty dirtbike makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
