Motorcycle GPS

I've considered using my phone, but wondered what you guys were using out there. I've recently discovered my love of getting lost on a bike and a GPS may come in handy after I get myself too deep into "lost" territory....

I use my android phone - there are several downloadable mapping suites that will do the trick. Powered USB lead and you're good to go, music too! :)

Yep i may do just that, i use a Droid RAZR max, so a RAM mount and a charger and I'd be good to go. I've got a buddy selling a Garmin 2820 on the cheap so it got me thinking.

Your phone will shout navigation instructions through that Scala as well ;)

I will wait for someone to pipe up on the garmin. I don't get the utility of a standalone unit that costs more to use than a thing most of us already own.

This is huge. I don't have a mount for mine so I tuck it in my pocket and it tells me where to go, in a sultry voice.

True that. The only concern I have is the suckage of my screen in direct sunlight. May have to fabricate a "sun hood". First world problems I know.

Oh c'mon - HUD inside your helmet. Or maybe some haptic feedback - buzz on the right side of your head to turn right etc.

I tend to use mine while stopped to figure out the next stretch of road. Haven't used it much while actually riding. I tend to keep my phone in the tank bag on a charger.

Maybe with the new R90 fairing, I'll install a Nexus 7. I'll put one on the back of my helmet for my passenger - sort of like in the back of the headrest in a car.

Hahaha! I just imagined your wife staring at the back of your head watching movies going down the road. That's a hilarious image for some reason.

Being 'thrifty' (cheap and broke ;D )
I bought a used Garmin off e-bay for $20.00
Going to open it up and fit an earphone jack instead of speaker.
Being an old model it's a bit bulky so mounting may be an issue but I'll figure something out
Wasn't there a HUD (head up display) visor being marketed about 5~6 yrs ago for around $350.00?

I do remember that visor. And pj, I've thought if doing the same. I always thought it would be cool to integrate a GPS unit into a triple tree...

Google helmet....awesome.

Mmmmmmm.....

I ride dirt bikes, and the Garmin 67 series are quite good. Not too big and can sit on the bars in a RAM mount. Plus it runs on batteries and will fit in your pocket so you can use it for other activities. It is also water proof, but your motorcycle probably shouldn't be ridden in bodies of water.

But as mentioned above, a smart phone would probably do everything you need.

I'm thinking you smart gentleman here can take something like this and find a way to make it work in a helmet....

You can buy just the hud here..

That's pretty neat, having the HUD separate is a good idea, wonder what it costs (being Oakley, very expensive?)

The "jet" version for sunglasses is listed for $499-$599 but those are also a pilot program. Since I'm into snowboarding I know the goggle one has been out for almost a second year now so I'm thinking it may be going for a little cheaper but I can't find the price.

After doing more research into the recon hud I've found that the question of them producing a motorcycle application has already been bought up and the company released a statement saying how this has been an idea for them and something they look forward to working on in the future. I imagine there going to have a hard time coming up with one that can fit the tons of different models of helmets out there. There probably going to make a system exclusive to a specific brand like they have with Oakley. As for the the original question of this thread I see plenty of people just mounting there phone and using its gps. If your worried about the sun just slap an anti glare screen protector on it!

There was an interesting little article on Yahoo yesterday about the pricing of optics.
A single company owns Oakley and multiple other 'glasses' companies around the world
The 'mark up' is a MINIMUM of 300% and 800%+ isn't too unusual
Seems they have something of a worldwide monopoly and intend to keep it.
People have gotten used to overpaying so think the pricing structure is 'normal'

I never thought it was normal! Only pair of sunglasses I have are Oakley, and the only reason I even have those is because they where a gift. I never understood what could make a pair of sunglasses hundreds of dollars. Like most other things in life your paying for the name stamped on them. However if I can come across the recon hud in the future for around 100$ or less is be tempted to snatch it up and see if I can get it to work in a helmet.
