My CB450 Cafe racer seat build - **No Welding**

Leon,

What type of bolts did you use to secure the cowling to the seat pan? I spent a good 1/2 hour at my local hardware store and I could not find any type of bolt that I liked.

I just used Flat-head carraige bolts and matching nuts that I got from Home Depot.

I saw those, but I was disappointed at the fat square-ish portion of the bolt near the head, so I thought that it would cause the ends of the bolts to stick out 1/8". How did you get around that issue? Make a larger hole in the cowling & seat pan??

yeah.. I just drilled a slightly bigger hole so that the square part sits flush...

I replaced the bolts I had with the Carraige ones. They make a HUGE difference ;D I can't wait for painting temps to creep in!

well.. lets see some pics..

Haha, I totally forgot to post pictures! Here is what its looking like right now. Hopefully I will be able to primer the cowling this weekend and epoxy the seat pan:

I think if you were to drop it down an inch and angle the seating position a bit so it's not at 90 degrees, it might flow with the tank lines better.

So, I have NOT read thru the entire thread, but enough to realize that you guys (in general) don't pay to close attention to pics... Ol' boy that started this thread did NOT use an NOS pan for this thing... Sure, first pics are of a pristine seat... Next pic (disassembled) shows the same seat/foam/and pan... Subsequent pics show a quite well-aged seat foam, and a VERY rusty pan that's been shiny-painted black... So... He's had one over on all of you! :D

NO-ONE in thier right mind would EVER cuut-up a perfect seat like that. He's just having one over on y'all....

Ok I'll take this one

First-"NO-ONE in their right mind would EVER cut-up a perfect seat like that" You've never met Noel

Second-You may want to have another look at the pics

Third- Meh never mind First and second pretty much covered it

Then again
Noel IS the Master of the Bait-and-Switch

Not to get into a pissing-match, here, but I DID look very closely at those pics.. The seat-pan being modified is a horrible, rusty piece. It is so obvious, I really shocked that anyone else hasn't noticed... I've been doing this for so long, I can tell a good part from bad, even from bad ebay photos. Sorry. He's playing you all... ;) It is interesting and inventive work for a different solution. I'm not saying anything bad about what he's doing, just that he's having a bit of fun with y'all...

As EVERYONE here knows
I'm the last guy to ever get into any sort of confrontation or "Pissing match"

But i gotta ask
Did you happen to notice how many seat pans there were in the photos?

I guess the real question is.....who fucking cares? Who would be dumb enough to waste energy pissing about details like that? As it is, I'll step up and say that your 'Xray/Ebay Vision glassed" are flawed. Looks to me to be the same seat parts.

As well, I've willingly and joyously chopped the shit out of rare/new/NOS parts if they didn't suit my needs or if I though I could extract some mincy collector whiner's tears. It's truly enjoyable, thank you Mr.Wizard.

OK so using the drill & work bench, I drill 2 holes on either side of the cowl, 1.5 inches apart:

cb450CRseatJ.jpg

With the holes in the cowl, I mock up where I want the cowl to go, mark where I need to drill the holes on the seat pan then using the workbench to hold the seat pan in place, I drill.

I mount the cowl with some temporary screws that have laying around, ( untill I get some nice ones at Crappy Tire) and voila!!

Here is the seat with the cowl mounted for now:

Now I"ll just prepare to make the bump stop on the front using high density floor foam... ;D
What is the height of that cowl?
