Yeah it's super cool to go over and talk to that guy. Every time I have something that I think is super difficult I take it over there and he pulls out some trick tool (often homemade) that makes the job simple.
Here's where things really start lookin sexy though. Oh what a difference some tires make.
Here are a few pics from it's first real test ride...which didn't go quite as well as planned. The bike developed a bit of an oil leak which appeared to be coming from the cylinder base gasket. More on that later...
Even with the leak I decided to go ahead and take the bike up to Palomar mountain with my buddy Josh on his KZ1000 Police Racer.
So I mentioned that it developed an oil leak, which appeared to be coming from the base gasket, so the motor had to come out and get the top end pulled off. Once I opened it up I found that not only were about half the valves out of spec, but the upper cam chain tensioner was also broken, which explained some of the noises it had been making.
So I got a full gasket kit, some new valve shims, new-old cam chain tensioner and a full set of piston rings. The cylinders were a little glazed, but otherwise in good shape so I didn't do any boring or anything. Just used a scotch brite pad to get a bit of cross hatch back. It took me forever and a day to get the old base gasket off but other than that everything went fairly smooth.
So after a lot of scrubbing and cleaning, and careful reassembly I got the motor back into the bike and fired it up for a test ride. It runs great, quiet, smooth, and with a lot more power than before thanks to actually having compression on all 4 cylinders (#3 was way low before). I did have one problem though, when I got back I found that it was still leaking oil in the same quantity as before.
So I got down on the floor with a can of carb cleaner and a bright light and started tracing the leak down. Now that the motor was clean, and not completely soaked in oil I could actually see where it was coming from. Turns out it wasn't the base gasket after all. Looks like the previous owner had neglected to adjust the lower cam chain for so long that it had been rubbing on the side of the cylinder case. It had been doing this for so long it actually pushed a little bulge out of the side, which had developed a hairline crack.
After thinking it over for a while I determined that there wasn't enough room in there to get my TIG welder, and even if I could I would have to tear the motor out and apart again, which I really didn't wanna do. After careful consideration the solution was pretty simple. I cleaned the area really really well with scotch brite and wire brushes, and patched it with JB Weld. Problem solved. ;D
So today was the day to finally take care of those giant, beat up, rusty mufflers. Ended up being a pretty easy job too. I picked up these dual cone mufflers on ebay for pretty cheap, and I really dig the look, plus they shaved a bunch of weight.
Installation really was as easy as just cutting the stock mufflers off where they weld onto the head pipes and clamping on the new ones. I was even able to re-use the hanger brackets that mount the cans to the passenger peg mounts. The bike is definitely a lot louder now, which I'm not sure if I like or not, but we'll find out after I go for my first real ride on it tomorrow.
The original plan was to build a complete exhaust for this thing out of stainless, but I just dont have the time to mess with that right now, so in the mean time I figured I'd just header wrap the stock pipes. Unfortunately I ran out of wrap after only doing one side, so I had to order in some more. Should have it totally done by next week.
A couple action shots from this sunday up at Palomar. I still love the fact that I can ride my Ducati up there and it barely gets a second look, but when I take this POS up to Mothers for breakfast it always draws a crowd. ;D
