My XS650 build

Should be able to pull top mounting bolts and bearings then twist it to remove
It's the reason the holes are elongated

I meant to look at it last night but I had a bunch of homework. I will look at it today.

I will also PM Rocan, i would like to not molest the bike if I could. Thanks for the info.

So I put the carbs and XS filters on and have a dilemma. The filters hit the frame rails for my seat. I flipped them upside down and now they don't hit, they sit above the frame rails :-\

I put my seat on and back as far as I can really and should have enough room, but I am not a fan of the look. I will have to try to post some pics later. I was brainstorming with my teacher (he is an old hot rodder) and he threw out the idea of making the tank come out and wrap over the filters. I think it could be done easy enough with some sheet metal, not enclosing it just pretty much folding over the filters and blending in with the lines of the tank. after I take the pics I will try to photoshop a sample.

I drew a quick pic on paint and will try to get it on here, my school has problems with photobucket.

So here are the pics finally.

the pods

they are totally blocked by my legs when I am on, but I do not hit them.

So give me some opinions and ideas please!

Hmmm...... Maybe getting some large diameter hose and snake them down a little bit?

I kinda don't know what else to say - either fab the tank extensions like you said or raise the seat.....

If you go to any auto parts store they will have a HUGE selection of radiator and cooling hoses. Pre molded stuff. I bet if ya took an hour and looked through it all, you could find some angled bits that would fit the carbs and allow you to move the filters down under the seat. I know theres a buch of short 45deg and 90deg pieces meant for auto cooling systems. Would look like a cool forced air set up too!

I googled xs650 dropseat and looked at a bunch of pics. A lot of the guys left them sticking up like that. I might try the hose Idea, how much would it mess things up if I tried to run some hose and mount them down by the bottom frame rail? It isjust an idea for a crazy look.

anyway, it will prop be a while before I tackle the issue anyway. I am going to try to start it on Tuesday, and my build time is going to be gone in few weeks, I am moving and starting a new job.

I will try to take some video of starting it, wish me luck. also one last plug for feeding fuel to the cards without the tank (temporarily just for start up) how do you guys do it?

How about long snorkels that pop up alongside the tank in line with the fuel cap? It'll look like an old school land cruiser had an illicit child with a bobber. ;)

I really like the stance this thing has... should be a riot. What kind of control so you plan on running? Looks like you have your feet out there for forward controls, but everytime I look at your bike, I feel it needs some frisco pegs... low, long and narrow, splitting traffic lanes like no ones business!

I must admit I do not know anything about frisco pegs, maybe you could elaborate, please!

I was planning on forward controls because of the low seat it is more comfortable out front, but they are not built so it is always up in the air, I have tossed around the idea of a suicide shift.

frisco pegs are more or less right between stock location and forward controls. allows you to control the bike easily in traffic.

Yes and they are up higher than standard controls giving you the ability to get some good lean while still being super low... Credit goes to jimmy souza who is the OG frisco style builder in the 70's.

Lately the guy over in Japan have been using them a lot.

So, I have some things put together, I will try to post a pick later, it is not a whole lot though.

I am making a big career change and move so I will not be doing very much for a little while on here. I just got some pinstriping brushes and how-to book that I am going to play around with while I wait for the money to come in to get some things I need to finish the bike. If all turns out I will have my own pinstriping on this thing when I am done.

Good luck with the career change! Can't wait to see your striping. I bought some brushes and paint this weekend too, but I'm not doing anything complicated. I'll be interested to hear how things work out for you.

SO, nothing done on the bike, except move it into its new home. I might be changing my mind on the bike design. I think I want to go with a more traditional bobber look, instead of the dropseat look. I think the bobber will be more fun to ride, I am seriously thinking about the frisco pegs, they look pretty aggresive.

I have been out of town a lot for work and have had no time on the bike but have started dabbling with my pinstriping, I will post a couple pics later, nothing impressive but it is a start.

Hopefully I will get to make some progress soon on the bike.

So, I have been getting the urge to blow off other responsibilities to work on the bike, so now I need to make it accessible. We had a big swap meet this weekend and I went with a mission. I wanted to find a fender and a headlight. I did not find a fender that I liked, I actually one found one guy that had 4 fenders. But I did find a headlight.

It has a look that I haven't seen much. It does only have a single filament bulb so I am going to try to convert it for hi/low beems. If someone has done this a point in the right direction would be helpful.

People loved our kids and they ended up getting free hot wheels and such, the kicker being a power wheels motorcycle for free! It does need a charger though.

On another note, I go out of town a lot for work and have been trying to teach myself to pinstripe. I really want to pinstripe my bike. So I have trying some practice lines and trying to figure out the right consistancy and such.

Here are my first two actual designs.

This is my first and actually designed it in my head on the fly

This one I copied the design from a printout

So my next move on the bike is I am going to ditch the dropseat frame and go for a more traditional bobber frame, then find some fenders and finish up the fab, then paint and wiring and everything else.

What type of brush's are you using? I started on Mack's then picked up a Kafka and it's a night and day difference between them, the Kafka is easier to pull curves and it makes it way easier to keep a somewhat even consistancy.

Had a little time this am to get caught up on your build. Nice job so far. I do have a couple of ideas/opinions (you did ask right? ;D)
Nice job on the pins. You really have an eye for it. Glad to see fellas picking it up. I think frisco pegs on a drop seat is not a great idea unless you are under 5'2" or something. Of course to each his own. But then again, you look pretty tall. In the picture you are as far back as you can get. Infact I'd be very surprised if you can get that far back. Remember your seat will be spring mounted and will need room to articulate and clear the tire/fender. Anyhow, the forwards position looks to be the most comfortable. Keep in mind no matter what position you go with the closer the pegs to the centerline of the bike the more lean you get. On my bike I have 2.5" of clearance and have plenty of lean angle because the pegs are close to the bikes centerline. I prefer mids because when needed its very easy to put a little weight on them to help absorb shock/bumps. Honestly though I think in your case forwards are the only way to go.
Bicycle shock would be cool for the seat but I wouldnt molest a perfectly good bicycle to get one. They can be purchased on ebay for pretty cheap. Might also check a local bicycle shop for take-offs.
The pods are cool right where they're at. Not much more to do with them. You cant really go out because they will hit your legs. Down will fill some frame void but might look like an after thought if not done well. I think its one of those things that come with a drop seat. I happen to like em there. edit: However, the pods angled down at a 22.5 or 45 deg angle should look good too.
Very cool headlight. Nice find! There's some pretty good info floating around here on converting to a car HED. Dont know if/how a HED would work since yours is not a sealed beam??
I didn't see what your plans were for the tank. I'd 100% try to find one that fits.
Just my .02 worth. I know its not worth much ;D
