new cafe build cb450

alright let me try this again.......

Well the cam link came tonight and I pressed it into place but it appears we may be a link off on the crank from top dead center, it's off a little bit counter clockwise when the cam marks are dead on... Anybody have advice for this issue? The engine spins around freely with no contact or anything, but I'm assuming this Is an issue that needs to be addressed... Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have a pic (that isn't a scantily clad woman)?

I'm having trouble picturing the issue. Are you saying that that cam gear marks don't line up with the top of the head when the crank is at TDC?

its ridiculous that i didnt take a picture of what was going on and post it, i was just exhausted and frustrated so i just closed up shop last night, ill post a pic and let you know what im talking about.. but yes.. when the engine is at TDC, the intake cam is one tooth below the side mark, and the exhaust is one mark above.. you have to move the engine about a quarter inch (which i assume is about one link) counter clockwise, and then the cams line up with the markings. ill post a picture tonight if i get out to the shop..

im thinking just simply getting a new chain and re-doing it.. if its off, its off. bottom line. i also am re-using the stock chain which im assuming is original, so i guess it wouldnt be a bad idea to replace it anyways. when you spin the motor there is no interference, but im assuming it would probably be impossible to time the thing if i left it that way.. i am just wondering if there is any possible way to jump a tooth back with the sprockets.. but last night i could see no way.

I'm not so sure about the 450.... it's pretty easy to remove the cam gear form most bikes, advance a tooth, and then put it back on, but I'm not sure about the 450. Hopefully someone else can offer some advice?

unless i can remove the housings on either side, that would give the cam some wiggle room and twist it back or forth to match it up.. that might work, ill give er a shot when i get home. thanks for your insight, most appreciated.

Ya... You could just drop the gear on the cam move the chain a link over and put everything together again, assuming that the timing on the shaft and the piston (TDC) is lined up. I just fucked this up on my bike and bent out the exhaust valves. It was a fun experience to say the least. I fixed it with what I just explained. Well... the timing part of it anyway.

If the master link is removable then you should be good to go. Just take the chain off, move the cams one tooth and put it back together.

I can't remember whether or not you need to break the timing chain on a 450... sorry I can't be of more help.

Here's the dilemma I'm at now... Engine is at tdc, and now my intake side is on the mark, but the exhaust is about an eighth of an inch off, is this good enough? Any help would be great..

Looks good to me. You can check to see how good it really is if you have a machinist's dial, timing wheel, and timing info for the cam.

Lol all of which I don't have... I'm wondering maybe this is the stretch in the chain from over the years possibly? Idk I'm just debating if I should just take the damn chain apart, buy another link and just replace it all.. What do you think?

Well after a little night of elbow grease and determination my brother and I got the old chain out and got the new one in, marks are dead on so it's for sure set correctly. Also got the new allballs racing bearing conversion for the gsxr front end.. Frame modification will be the next step of the build, first step will be getting all the tabs stripped and get the frame blasted and in prime.

finished up the motor today, taking some time to get the tapet clearance figured out and getting the covers back on, has aspirations of closing it up, filling it with oil and checking to make sure i have compression... turned out to be success, had about 190 in the points side, along with roughly 180 or so on the opposite. posting a picture of the engine with all the covers on, all thats left is to figure out the wiring on the stator, which was all naked and worn. issues for another day. next up will be the frame modification, will post pictures of a modified frame that im photoshopping to see what everyone thinks, stay tuned.

in the lower frame, the triangular piece i was thinking some type of perforated holes, or maybe taking it to a cnc shop and having them do the honda logo in the middle.

Are you planning on doing a monoshock conversion? The geometry will not likely work out if the plan is to stick with twin shocks.

word. getting pretty excited about how quickly this bike is moving along. hoping to be finished in the next two months, then on to the next one!
