new cafe build cb450

So are the rotors spaced out from the hub to meet the calipers? You're saying when you mount the caliper on the fork, it's rubbing the spokes?

Shit the bed dude!!!

I forgot wot u were running on this bike 8)

Noooow u can put the tins on and look an look an look ;)

Bitch about the caliper, radial mounted are I suppose harder to offset them for final fitment

How much do u recon u need to shave dude, how much clearance are u after

Cheers Wayne :)

yeah when i installed the calipers, the back side is just barely, barely rubbing the spokes right now.. i would say i need like 1/8" milled off the back (at least) to have some comfortable clearance from the spokes. this might be a dumb question, but how far can a spoked wheel flex? would hate to have the spokes hit the calipers while flexing. will take some updated pics when i can.. i did however get the motor back into the frame this weekend, looks awesome. need to get the rear suspension linkage finished up this week, and find some good rear sets. most likely going to find some early 2000 cbr600 setups.

This bike is looking way cool. Funny I have the same issue with my tracker project and have the same dumb question. Will check back hopefully someone has an answer.

hopefully someone chimes in. i know for a fact someone on DTT showed in great detail trimming down the backside of a caliper for spoke clearance, he even donated a caliper and went down until it broke through so he knew exactly how much he could trim down. just cant think of the thread or build. im thinking an 1/8" trimmed off the back side and it will have sufficient clearance.

well I did some sanding tonight to get some more clearance between the calipers and spokes.. Had about an 1/8" and decided to take a little bit more off, and ended up breaking through.. started to leak fluid as you can see from the pic.. so having that said, is this caliper now junk or can I have someone weld some aluminum back on and smooth it out? I'm assuming no because of the pressure etc but thought I'd ask. and really hoping if someone will shine some light on the whole "how much does a spoked wheel flex" question.. was an 1/8" enough clearance? I wanna kick myself when I just go a little too far and fuck something up.. oh well.

Junk is such a harsh word. Try to think of it as a learning experience creating spare parts.

1/8 is more than enough if it's a fixed 4 piston caliper. The problem you are finding is common when trying to fit 4 pots with spoked wheels and you are not alone in turning a good caliper into spare pistons. That's why it's so much easier to use SV650 or EX500 floating calipers. They are much thinner on the inner side and easier to mount.

always love when you chime in teazer and shed some light on head scratching problems. yeah I suppose you're right, a learning experience we'll call it. glad to know an 1/8" is enough clearance so I won't make that mistake again.

Damn, now I'm not to excited about doing my caliper now, but I guess if I have to destroy one to figure it out it won't be the last time I screw up something up. You could probably tig it and be OK. Or just buy these on E-bay for $36 shipped.

right on.. might take it with me this weekend when i pick up my other bike and have the guy throw some tig welds on there and see how it holds up.. when i was sanding it down i went on a little bit of an angle too much, if i had taken it straight down, i don't think i would have ran into this problem.. but i wanted it to be evenly spaced from the spoke cause it looked better.. and I'm weird like that i guess. hah

I want to see more NOW!

i know! hoping to have some good updates soon, I'm planning on getting the rear subframe and tail figured out in the next couple of weeks, then get some good rear sets..

you can also still save that, just tack weld that back up and smooth it out again... be good to go

thanks dude, most appreciated. this morning I came across a set of stock Yamaha banshee carbs, to my knowledge they are 26mm mikuni's. would these be too small for my bike? I know the norm is the vm30's or 32's.. ive seen its pretty common to remove the tors (throttle override system) and bore them out to 28mm as well.. thoughts?

I would not go 26mm, look at some of the ZR440 snowmobiles the cats came with 30mm VM's (mine has them on there now) alot of guys upgrade them to the flat slides and you can pick them up stupic cheap. i got my last set for $14 shipped! all the bike guys search VM30 so the prices are stupid high, trick is to figure out what runs them stock and you can search that and carb... may need to do a bit of homework to figure out what sleds run them, i do not know all of them off hand but there are a ton. you are of course going to have to jet and adjust the clip but you would have to do that anyway ya know
